One of the best things about homeschooling my children for so many years is the opportunity I had to read good books that I had missed out on growing up! Children's author, Beverly Cleary, recently deceased, is featured in this episode.

Children's book author, Beverly Cleary, recently passed away at 104 leaving an enormous impact from the many beloved children's books that she authored in her lifetime.

Throughout my homeschooling years Beverly Cleary books were a staple on recommended reading lists. They crossed over between overtly Christian as well as secular curriculum and had high interest topics for resistant readers.
Listening to a recorded interview I learned about how she had had a previous career as a librarian and started writing children's books (a buried dream) after being asked where the books about "kids like us" were. Beverly had grown up as a Presbyterian and married a Catholic man. Her books were not overtly Christian or faith-based, but were books that children could identify with (adults, too!) as they touched on issues and emotions common to the human experience -- universal issues that the children could identify with. How marvelous when a child can read or listen to a story and recognize that he or she isn't the only one who feels like this, or who has this or that problem! And what a great way to open doors to literacy and literature for so many. Beverly Cleary was certainly a Legacy Lady in the tremendous impact she left on the world and the standard she set for children's literature.
I don't know how much wealth Mrs. Cleary accumulated over the course of her life and publishing career or how it was managed, but the tremendous amount of books published and sold had to have brought in a sizable sum.
The Bible teaches us:
“To those who use well what they are given, even more will be given, and they will have an abundance. But from those who do nothing, even what little they have will be taken away.” Matthew 25:29 NLT
A legacy income is one that keeps coming in after the bulk of the work is done -- a residual income. There are different types that you may be familiar with. Investments in real estate that increases in value over time is something we can all recognize, even if we aren't real estate investors ourselves. Another type is something like books or other assets that can be sold over and over again. Of course physical books must be printed multiple times, but the writing and formatting is done with the first book and used over and over. Other assets that can be produced once and continue to increase in value or can be resold can be useful to build a legacy income. That's not to say there isn't ANY more work or management to be done or that there's zero risk involved, but a building a legacy income is one way to build a legacy for your family and heirs.
