Did you know essential oils can help your emotions?  


It makes sense when you think about it.  The scents you associate with happy times like holidays (evergreen trees?) or comfort (homemade apple pie?) or even a special person (a favorite perfume) can trigger an emotional response.  How about negative emotions?  Can you think of any negative associations with certain scents?  


The actual molecules of essential oils are transmitted rapidly to the brain when inhaled as well.  So it is more than a sentimental reminder of earlier experiences and associated feelings.  


Certain essential oils are noted for their uplifting boost such as citrus (like orange essential oil, tangerine essential oil, bergamot essential oil).  Diffusing or otherwise inhaling is a great way to get an emotional boost.  


Whether sleep loss is caused by a blue mood or it’s the other way around, getting a good night’s sleep is important to handle stress and keep the blues from taking a deeper dive.  Lavender essential oil is well-known for helping to calm stress and help with relaxation, which in turn helps with getting to sleep.  For even more help Roman Chamomile is another well-known aid to promote calm any time of day or night.  


Rosemary essential oil, as well as Rose, can be beneficial in lifting mood.  


Digging a little deeper might reveal one or more causes for your blue moods and enable you to target the roots whether pain, fatigue, stress, or anxiety, and choose additional essential oils to provide even more pointed relief.  


Start out with one essential oil and only one or two drops, especially if you are new to their use.  Go slow when adding more oils and/or more drops either in a diffuser, or topically and dilute with a few drops of carrier oil.  This helps keep the essential oil from evaporating and also lengthens it’s absorption time when using topically.

GREAT HAIR in 5 STEPS!

Who wouldn't like to have great hair?!

And great looking hair starts with healthy hair!  

While that seems like a no-brainer, we tend to over-estimate our hair's resilience and under-estimate the damaging effects that accumulate and contribute to lack-luster hair. One of the reasons for this may be the delayed reaction of when those effects show up and become obvious.  A less than healthy diet or lengthy illness may not seem to do damage to your previously glowing tresses immediately, but may show up weeks or months later, especially if the source of the damage is prolonged.  Temporary fixes can be some help to mask unhealthy hair, but don't really address the underlying problems.  

When they first came home my adopted daughters' hair was dry, brittle and thin,  due to malnutrition among other things. Today they both have much thicker, longer and healthy BEAUTIFUL hair!  Even the grayish color is gone (Of course the oldest has colored hers purple, but that is another story! Ha, ha!)

STEP ONE:  Consistent holistic health practices.  Taking care of your overall health long term shows on your hair.  Brittle nails, dry skin and lack-luster hair are all signs of poor health.  And taking care of your health is an important investment that you don't want to miss.  Things like healthy diet and exercise will affect your hair long term.  Junk food today may not show up tomorrow, but junk food all month may be evident a few  months from now.  Alternatively, healthy fats and other key nutrients can be a boon to your hair, not to mention your skin and nails and internal organs! Remember the old acronym, GIGO, "Garbage In, Garbage Out" to remind yourself to be consistently health conscious.

STEP TWO:  Cleanliness.    Long hair can afford to be washed less frequently than short hair as a general rule.  Anywhere from once a week to daily washing  (depending on hair type, style, length, etc.) can be adequate.  Clean hair is much more attractive than oily, greasy-looking hair any day.  But pay attention to the products you are using.   Are they are truly doing your hair more good than harm?    If the shampoo, conditioner, styling products are loaded with toxic chemicals you may want to switch to a cleaner,  milder formula, even if it means washing more frequently.  One suggestion is to look at the ingredients and Google anything you can't pronounce or do not know what it is after the words, "dangers of . . . . ."  I recommend our toxin-free hair care products.

STEP THREE:  Protection:  Natural oils in your hair give some protection from drying out and from the elements.  However, you can do more to protect your hair with quality shampoo, conditioner, and styling products.   The way you treat your hair on a regular basis affects its condition.  Protect your hair from super hot water and remember to give a final rinse in cool water to smooth the strands and protect from breakage.  Another way to protect from breakage is to avoid rough handling.  Choose brushes and appliances (if you use them) wisely and pat dry with a towel since vigorous rubbing can tangle and break hair.  Sunscreen can help protect from sun damage as well as hats or other head coverings.  Securing long hair from wind damage can avoid tangles and breakage as well.  

STEP FOUR:  Avoid Excessive Heat Styling:  Excessive heat styling can damage hair over time.  If you can find a cut and style which works with your natural hair patterns and let your hair dry naturally it will be best.  However, if you heat dry be careful not to overdo it.  Blow drying, plus curling or straightening every day will take a toll on your hair.  If you can set your style and either air dry or heat dry all the better.
