How do I know which supplements to take?

How do I know which supplements to take?

Let’s chat about supplements! Where should you start? What’s important on the label?

This is easily a very confusing part of any natural lifestyle.  We don't want to waste money but we want to make sure we are absorbing whatever supplements we take.  I don't want to take a handful of supplements several times a day but I do want energy and strong body systems.

We take herbal supplements, oil-infused supplements and high quality whole food supplements.

Why do we need supplements?

1) Our diets are not as nutrient dense as our ancestors.  Our soil is depleted of minerals from so many chemicals and solvents used on our planet.  Most often, the food we eat is laden with pesticides, herbicides and genetically modified organisms - not things that are good for our bodies and could in fact lead to more health issues.

2) Low calorie diets lead to fewer nutrients being eaten.   There seems to be a new fad diet every other week.  I'm all for eating the way that is best for you.  If that's Paleo or Keto, go for it!  At my house, we follow the 80/20 rule - 80% organic whole foods, 20% other.  I've found that the more foods you tell yourself you can't have, the more you will want those foods.  So focusing on what you can have and having lots of it may help your mindset around eating.
3) Some nutrients are not produced naturally by our bodies.  Our body does not naturally produce vitamin C, so it needs to be supplemented.  Protein and water are not made in the body so we have to consume those daily.

What to look for on the label?

1) Check the ingredients.  You do not need sugar in your supplements!  Be sure you check for all the 'other' names of sugars that might be in your vitamins.  There are 75 different names of sugar that you could find on any food/supplement label.  Dextrose, Fructose, Sucrose, Glucose, Lactose, Maltose, HFCS...are some of those names.  Sugar is commonly hidden in plain sight for most processed foods and supplements.

2) Does the supplement say what bad ingredients it is free from?  Free from added sugars, artificial dyes, and artificial flavors.  The term "natural flavors" has not been defined by the Food and Drug Administration so having this on a label could mean anything.  Theses 'natural flavor' mixtures can contain more than 100 different chemicals, including preservatives, solvents and other substances.  Knowing where your supplements come from if very important so that you know their production practices and trust that the natural flavors are in fact, naturally from a plant.

Let's talk absorption.  Most people taking supplements from the drug store are only absorbing about 20-30% of the supplement.  That means you are not getting all of those vitamins and minerals listed on that bottle.  Most of the supplements we take are infused with essential oils.  This is important because research has shown that adding essential oils to a supplement can increase absorption to as high as 80%!  that's about 4 times more absorption than with regular supplements.

In line with absorption is checking the supplement for the best form the vitamin you are taking.   Let's look at vitamin C for example.  Ascorbic Acid is a common form of vitamin C.  But this can be a natural form or synthetic form.  We don't want synthetic vitamin C because it is full of chemicals and made in a lab, not a field.    We look for bioflavonoids in our vitamin C.   Bioflavonoids are plant compounds that function as antioxidants and they increase the bioavailability of ascorbic acid in your body.   Acerola is one of the most well-known natural forms of vitamin C.  This is the form of vitamin C we prefer to take at our house.  it is rich in antioxidant nutrients and has been used in modern and folk medicine.   in a study of several forms of vitamin C containing fruits and their relative amounts of vitamin C, acerola outperformed the other fruits, especially when it is organically grown.   Acerola reportedly contained higher amounts of vitamin C than oranges and strawberries and was found to be a significant source of vitamin A as well.

Summer Skin Care Tips

Hello Friend!
June is here! Summer is almost here! Over the upcoming month we're going to learn about taking care of our skin. This is an important habit all year long, but especially in the summer, as it can be easy to focus on sun protection and forget the other important routines for caring for skin.
Your skin is the largest organ of your body, made up of several different components, including water, protein, lipids (fats), and different minerals and chemicals. Its job is to protect you from infections and other environmental assaults. The skin also contains nerves that sense cold, heat, pain, pressure, and touch.
Throughout your life, your skin will change constantly, for better or worse. In fact, your skin will renew itself approximately once a month! This is a process that usually goes unnoticed, unless your skin becomes unhealthy and begins to be noticeably flaky or scaly. Proper skin care is essential to maintaining the health and vitality of this protective organ.

Exfoliation is the removal of dry/dead skin cells on the surface of the skin and is one of the most important aspects of your home skincare routine for face and body.
Exfoliation not only helps many skin problems, it also increases blood circulation, which in turn helps you to achieve healthy and glowing skin.

We recommend exfoliating twice a week to keep your skin healthy and glowing.
