I’m Tawni, a wellness advocate and Independent Distributor for Young Living. I have a growing global team of Young Living members and customers that stretches from Seattle to Vienna to Australia, and to the places in between. I'm also a blogger and hand-lettering artist, a wife to a math teacher, and a mom to two crazy young boys.
Essential oils have made my work-at-home-mom life – and my whole family's life – so much easier, cleaner, and healthier, and I have become incredibly passionate about essential oils and the amazing things they can do.
When I enrolled with Young Living, it was because I wanted to get my family on track with our physical health and wanted to find a synthetic-free way to support our systems (especially in the colder seasons). Purity was really important to me too when I was deciding which company to go with, which is ultimately why I chose Young Living. Once I started using the oils and realized how effective they are, and as I continue to learn more about their many uses, the only regret I have is that I didn't start sooner! These oils have completely turned my family's health around, and have changed the way we run our home.
Now we use oils all day everyday, and have been able to effectively and easily integrate essential oils into our family's daily life to promote natural wellness in our home. The boys love our oils and even have their own favorites, and my husband, who was very doubtful at the start, asks me now, “do you have an oil for…” And of course I answer, “YES, there’s an oil for that.”
It is my hope that every single person I know will jump into the "oily lifestyle" with both feet because I am confident about how much these oils can do to enhance and maintain a healthier lifestyle for us all!
We are very diligent about our protection of earth
and its citizens. We hold the highest standards for our essential oil production process, bringing the
world the finest products available. From the seed of the plant to the seal on the bottle, our high standards
are integral with who we are.
This supplement is designed specifically in support of the female endocrine system and
is formulated with ginger, cassia, and other essential oils
along with vitamin B6, zinc, and a proprietary blend of health-promoting constituents.
We used to have scented plug-ins plus a number of scented candles in every room of our house. Of course we had air-freshener and fabric sprays, too, and would spritz, spritz, spritz everything, everywhere. All of it smelled so lovely, I thought, but I never considered what I was exposing my family and myself to when it came to ingredients.
Since I've become more and more passionate about wellness, and my husband and I are becoming more aware and cautious about what we expose our family to, I've begun making DIY room and fabric spray which, if you can believe it, works even better than the stuff we were buying at the store. Plus I know it's absolutely toxin-free because I'm making it myself.
This recipe is super-simple – you only really need two ingredients: distilled water and essential oils. I like to use a bit of witch hazel too, because the oils last longer when they can mix with something other than water. If you don't like the smell of witch hazel though, you can add a thin layer of epsom or sea salts to the bottom of your spray bottle before adding your essential oils and distilled water.
I have to note here that while proper essential oils are all-natural, that doesn’t make them safe to use without caution. You should use extreme care (and do your own research) before using essential oils. It's important to use high-quality essential oils – you should look for 100% pure essential oils (definitely avoid anything that’s labeled “fragrance” or “perfume” oil). Also, don’t necessarily be swayed by a label that says “therapeutic grade.” There is no regulated grading system for essential oils, so anyone can label their oil “therapeutic grade” if they want to.
There is only one company I trust for essential oils, and that is Young Living. Their incredibly high standards and Seed to Seal® promise, along with my experience with the company and their products, has me completely convinced that they are the absolute best out there with the purest (thereby safest and most effective) essential oils available on the market.
What You'll Need
Glass Spray Bottle – I use 100ml bottles, which is approximately 3 ounces. 4oz is also fine – even 6oz – but I personally wouldn't go any larger than a 6oz bottle unless I knew for sure I'd be powering through the spray. It's best if you can find glass spray bottles as some essential oils will erode synthetic material (such as plastic). Amber, blue, or green glass bottles are even better because they'll protect the oils from light. I found my amber glass bottles on Amazon.
Distilled Water – The amount you need will depend on the size of bottle you have. Basically, your bottle will be 2/3 distilled water. You'll need to use more water though if you choose not to use witch hazel in your mixture.
Essential Oils – For this recipe I'll be using Young Living's Thieves® and Purification® blends, which happens to be our favorite combo for so many things. When you combine these two powerhouse blends, you, your family, and your home benefit in so many ways. In my 100ml bottle I add 20-25 drops of each blend. You can use this handy-dandy dilution calculator I found on another site to determine how many drops of EO you need for your bottle.
Optional: Witch Hazel – I prefer to use witch hazel in my recipe because it gives something for the oils to adhere to, plus it adds some additional purifying properties to the mist. I also like the smell of witch hazel! (I've seen some recipes that have said that vodka can be used instead of witch hazel, but I've never tried that myself.) The amount you need will again depend on the size of bottle you have. Your bottle will be just under 1/3 witch hazel.
Optional: Epsom or Sea Salt – If you're opting out of the witch hazel and are just using distilled water, you'll need a pinch or two of epsom or sea salt to create a thin layer at the bottom of your bottle. The salts give something for the oil to adhere to so they're not just floating around in the water.
Start by cleaning or rinsing out your bottle.
If you aren't using witch hazel, add a layer of epsom or sea salts to the bottom of your glass bottle.
If you are using witch hazel, fill your bottle to a little less than 1/3.
Add your oils. Depending on the size of your bottle, you'll need anywhere from 50-100 drops of essential oil. In my 100ml bottle I add 20-25 drops each of Thieves® and Purification® oils. Use this dilution calculator to determine how many drops you'll need for your bottle.
If you used the salts, let the oils soak into the salts for a few minutes before moving on.
If you used witch hazel, close your bottle and tip it upside down once or twice before moving on.
Fill the rest of your bottle with distilled water, close it up, and tip the bottle upside down once or twice. Don't shake the bottle, as that causes the oils to oxidize. Tipping the bottle upside down will mix the solution up just fine.
Spray away! I recommend tipping the bottle upside down once or twice before each use, to make sure the oils aren't just hanging out at the top of the mixture.
This room spray is safe for everything. We use it in our bathroom (Pro Tip: spray inside the toilet BEFORE you go), in the kitchen, in the boys' rooms, and even on our curtains, rugs, and couch. It's also absolutely safe for your skin – actually, it's good for your skin – so don't worry if you "make contact."
There are so many great oils that have a crazy amount of benefits – to your home, your physical health, and even to your emotional health – which would work really well in room and fabric sprays. We tend to stick with the blends I mentioned above for this particular recipe, because of the amount of benefits it has not only to the air (Purification® got its name for a reason, after all), but also to our bodies. Here are some other combos we've tried and enjoyed too though; I recommend playing around so you can choose your own favorite!
Lavender + Orange
Lavender + Purification
Purification + Peppermint
Peppermint + Citrus Fresh
Lemongrass + Geranium
When it comes to essential oils, quality is extremely important. Who and where you get your oils from and how the plants and oils are cared for and distilled makes a huge difference, and yes, you can have control over that. As I mentioned, there is only one company I trust for essential oils, and that's Young Living, because of their incredibly high standards and their unequivocal Seed to Seal® promise.
Hey guys! It’s looking pretty spiffy around here! I’m Jane, and I’m so excited to be guest posting on Tawni’s blog today!
A little about me: I’m a lifestyle blogger over at Typically Jane where I talk about all things home, my love of fashion, life in the Pacific Northwest, and recipes. By day, I have the best job in the world, a Real Estate Broker, so I get to help awesome people buy or sell their homes. I live in beautiful Washington state(close to where Tawni is from, actually!) with my boyfriend Tom who I lovingly refer to as The Handsome Hunk, and our three rescue dogs. Between his work schedule in the Navy, a house full of dogs, and our active lifestyle, things are always a little crazy, but, that’s also the way we like it! Date night is my favorite night of the week, I’m a sucker for a good dad joke, and if you’re wondering more about our life, start here.
If you’re around the blog, stop by and say hi! Or find me on Instagram, like all the dang time, where I religiously post little snippets of our lives like our trip to St. Augustine last week, or one of the many festivals we go to.
I’m so grateful to Tawni for sharing her love of essential oils on her blog. I was a little hesitant at first, because that’s my nature. I need proof something works. But, I decided to give it a try and I haven’t looked back. I drank the Kool-Aid y'all! Now I’m a big essential oil believer. I use them to rid my home of that dreaded dog smell, help us sleep, as part of my skincare routine, a healthier alternative to conventional cleaning products, and more!
I was perusing the Young Living blog and found their recipe section with ideas ranging from ice cream with lavender oil to soups with black pepper oil. How fun is that?! Previously, I had done a drop of lemon essential oil in my water, but nothing more than that. The idea of using these healthy oils in food totally opened up a new door for me. I immediately went to the drawing board and started thinking up what my first essential oil recipe would be. Since fall just began, it was a natural fit to come up with a quick and easy essential oil cider recipe!
Apple cider is phenomenal, but it takes hours to make it by scratch. It seems like everyone’s lives are so much busier these days, and while I wish I had half a day to dedicate to making cider, that just isn’t my life. I think a lot of people are in that same boat. I want all the comforts of a wonderful fall, full of homemade things, cozy moments, and warm memories. But, I need it all to fit into my crazy, hectic schedule. This quick and easy essential oil cider recipe takes 10 minutes or less. If you have a fancy induction cooktop that boils water in 90 seconds, it will literally take you 90 seconds. (Okay, that’s a lie, it will be more like 98 seconds with time added for pouring and trying not to spill.) So without further ado, I bring you my quick and easy essential oil cider recipe!
Quick and Easy Essential Oil Cider
Makes 4-ish Servings (I’m into “ish” measurements)
4-ish cups Unfiltered Apple Juice (like Simply Apple)
3 drops Young Living Orange Vitality Essential Oil
1 drop Young Living Cinnamon Bark Vitality Essential Oil
2 drops Young Living Clove Vitality Essential Oil
4 Cinnamon Sticks (optional)
Add unfiltered apple juice to a small pot.
Put on high heat.
Add drops of essential oils.
Keep on heat until the cider just starts to bubble.
Take off heat.
Serve hot, and garnish with cinnamon sticks to make the cider especially fall-y.
And, that’s all there is to it! Quick and easy essential oil cider!
