5 Must-Ask Questions for Respectful Medical Care

Momma,

Have you ever left your child's doctor appointment feeling unheard or pressured into decisions that didn't sit right with your mama heart?
I've been there too, and let me tell you - it doesn't have to be that way.
As moms, we're the ultimate advocates for our children. We know them best, and we should feel confident in medical settings, not intimidated or dismissed.
That's why I've put together these five game-changing questions that can transform your experience at your child's next appointment.

Question #1: "What are the risks and benefits of this treatment, vaccine, or procedure?"

Why this is important: Every medical decision has both pros and cons. If your doctor only highlights the benefits without acknowledging potential risks, that's a red flag for me. A respectful doctor will give you the full picture so you can make a truly informed choice.

Question #2: "Can you provide me with the full vaccine insert for review?"

Why this is important: The standard handout you typically receive is just a summary. The complete insert contains important details about ingredients, side effects, and contraindications. If they can't or won't provide it, you can always find these documents online through the FDA website or simply google the vaccine followed by the name and insert. This should pull up a PDF for you.

Question #3: "Are there alternative ways to support my child's health that don't involve medication?"

Why this is important: This question opens the door to exploring holistic approaches. Many conventional pediatricians have limited training in natural health options, and their answer will reveal a lot about their openness to complementary approaches.

Question #4: "If I decide to decline this treatment, will you still support my family's healthcare choices?"

If you only have time for ONE question on this list, make it this one.

Our family experienced this firsthand just last month when one of my children was seeking care for my grandson. This question reveals everything about whether a provider truly respects you as a parent or just expects blind compliance. The answer tells you whether they see themselves as the authority over your child or as a helpful partner in your child's wellness journey.

This perspective is crucial - it transforms the relationship from hierarchical to collaborative, which is exactly what healthcare should be. The provider brings their medical knowledge to the table, while you bring your irreplaceable insight about your child and your family values. The best healthcare relationships honor both contributions equally, without one dominating the other.

Question #5: How you respond based on their answers:

If they support your choices, wonderful! You've found a keeper.

If not, here is your reminder ahead of time to stay calm, request your medical records,(if they have any) and let them know your time here is done. Start researching providers who align better with your family's approach to health.

Remember this, sweet momma: YOU are the ultimate decision-maker for your child's health. No white coat, no credential, no authority trumps your God-given right and responsibility to make informed choices for your family.
Walking into that doctor's office armed with these questions isn't just about getting answers - it's about reclaiming your confidence and your voice.
You were divinely appointed to be your child's protector, and that calling outranks any medical degree hanging on the wall.

Your child deserves a healthcare team that respects your role as their primary advocate. With these questions in hand, you're well-equipped to find providers who will truly partner with you on this journey.
