Let me tell you a story ...
When my daughter was a baby, she had terrible skin irritation on her cheeks, and ask she got older, she developed spots on her torso and inside her elbows and knees. All the doctors could suggest for relief was steroid creams and ointments that really did nothing to heal her skin, plus they were expensive!
Many years later, I began making my own laundry detergent to save some money. The homemade detergent was a concoction of ingredients I could count on one hand. While I didn't notice it right away, my daughter's skin irritation diminished and eventually went away. I didn't make the connection until long after that her skin issues could have been the detergent and other products I was using for her clothes! Those products leave residue in our clothes that sit on our skin all day long, day in and day out.
If you are someone who has some eczema, your skin may be trying to detox. According to this article on livestrong.com, "The main organs that are capable of flushing out unwanted toxins and chemicals from the body are the liver, kidney, GI system and the skin ... your skin plays an active role in the elimination process through your pores, and since we sweat through our pores, a common skin reaction that is described with certain detox regimens or elimination diets is a red, bumpy, itchy skin rash." According to this description, my daughter's skin irritation was more than likely her body trying to detox.
Unfortunately the majority of the laundry soaps and detergents available to us are full of dangerous ingredients such as 1,4-dioxane; fragrance; SLS; and more. We breathe in those chemicals as the laundry is being washed, dried and even as we wear our clothes and snuggle into our blankets and towels. These chemicals have been linked to cancer, reproductive and developmental toxicity, allergies and sensitivities yet they’re still readily available to us and marketed as “safe” and “normal.”

I'm thankful I don't have to make my laundry detergent anymore because I've found a legitimately SAFE solution with Thieves Laundry Detergent. It is made of plant-based ingredients and leaves no chemical or synthetic residue so you can snuggle up with NO worries! It contains natural enzymes and cleaning agents and of course, the most powerful essential oils on the planet. Your clothes will be fresh and clean and left with a light citrus scent, not a heavy perfume.
This soap is concentrated so a little goes a long way! You can get 64 loads with just one 32-ounce bottle, making it economic AND a safe alternative for your family. Want to get DOUBLE that? Try this hack!
- Pour 16 oz soap (half the bottle) from the bottle into a spare container.
- Add 3 capfuls of Thieves Household Cleaner (as a booster; optional).
- Fill bottle with 16 oz. distilled or filtered water.
- Gently shake until completely incorporated.
- Use as directed on the bottle.
If you love having a scent to your laundry, try using this Laundry Scent Booster!
In a quart sized mason jar, combine the following:
2 cups epsom salt
1 cup baking soda
20-30 drops of essential oil (the more drops you use, the more scent you have)
Combine well. Add 2 tbsp to each load.
Oil combinations to try (I get my oils here):
Tea Tree + Lavender + Lemon
Lavender + Lemon + Peppermint
Eucalyptus + Lavender
Lavender + Basil
Peppermint + Orange
Grapefruit + Orange + Lime
Orange + Tangerine + Bergamot
One last tip - Instead of grabbing dryer sheets (even the unscented ones are filled with junk), grab some wool dryer balls from Amazon or a store like Trader Joe’s. It's such an easy switch! Add 3-5 drops of your choice of essential oil to each dryer ball and freshen up that laundry. For best results, drop the essential oils to the balls at the end of the dry cycle and let them toss for 5 minutes for best results.
If you're wondering how my daughter's skin is now ... she no longer has any of those rashes. She has grown up to be an ingredient-savvy young lady. If she does have flare-ups anywhere, she recognizes where the problem is, and she takes care of it right away.
