Understanding and Maintaining a Sense of Control in Your Life

In today's superhigh-paced world, maintaining a sense of control can be particularly challenging, especially for us shift workers and healthcare professionals. When life feels overwhelming, regaining control can significantly improve your overall well-being. This blog post aims to define what " feeling sense of control" is, provide five ways to maintain it, and offer a few tips on how essential oils can assist in this process.

What is a Sense of Control?

A sense of control refers to the feeling that you have authority over your life and decisions. It's the belief that you can influence the events and outcomes in your life, rather than being a passive participant. This perception is crucial for mental health, as it reduces stress and anxiety, and boosts overall well-being and balance.

5 Ways to Maintain a Sense of Control

1. Set Clear Goals

Setting both short-term and long-term goals helps you focus on what truly matters. Break down larger goals into smaller tasks and set reasonable deadlines for each. This gives you a roadmap to follow, making it easier to stay on track and feel accomplished.  A day planner really assists me with this.

2. Establish Routines

Creating routines can provide a sense of structure and predictability in your daily life. This can include having a set wake-up time, meal times, exercise schedule, etc. Routines create a sense of control by allowing you to plan and prioritize your tasks efficiently.  Even when working shift worker it is doable.... just takes practice and flexibility.

3. Practice Mindfulness

Mindfulness involves being fully present and aware of your thoughts, feelings, and surroundings without judgment. It allows you to acknowledge and accept things as they are, rather than trying to control or change them. Practicing mindfulness can help reduce stress and anxiety by helping you let go of the need for absolute control.  I have found some pretty unique guided mindfulness exercises on UTube or apps for your phone.

4. Delegate Tasks

Don't be afraid to ask for help or
Routines create a sense of predictability and structure, which can be particularly beneficial for shift workers. Establish daily routines that include time for work, rest, and leisure. Consistency in your schedule will help your body and mind adapt, making you feel more in control.

3. Prioritize Self-Care

Taking care of yourself is essential for maintaining a sense of control. Allocate time for activities that rejuvenate you, such as exercise, reading, or spending time with loved ones. Self-care helps you recharge and approach challenges with a clear mind.  How does a whole day each month dedicated to self-care sound... impossible or something to strive for?

4. Learn to Say No

Sometimes, maintaining control means setting boundaries. It's okay to say no to additional responsibilities or social engagements if they overwhelm you. Prioritizing your well-being allows you to focus on what truly matters.

5. Stay Informed but Limit Media Consumption

While staying informed is important, excessive media consumption can lead to anxiety and a sense of helplessness and depression. Choose reliable news sources and limit the time you spend consuming news. This balance will keep you informed without feeling overwhelmed.
