Unlocking Serenity: A Comprehensive Guide to Nervous System Reset

Unlocking Serenity: A Comprehensive Guide to Nervous System Reset
In our busy lives the need for a nervous system reset has become more important than ever. As we navigate through the complexities of daily life, from juggling work and family to managing personal goals and societal expectations, our bodies and minds often bear the brunt of this continuous stress. Here I try to help you delve deeper into the concept of resetting your nervous system, offering you practical steps and strategies to reclaim your peace and enhance your overall well-being.

Understanding the Nervous System

Before we embark on the journey of resetting, it's important to understand the powerhouse that is our nervous system. This complex network serves as the control center for all our bodily functions, divided primarily into the central nervous system (CNS) - which includes the brain and spinal cord - and the peripheral nervous system (PNS), which extends throughout our bodies.

The nervous system is further broken down into the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems, often simplified as the "fight or flight" and "rest and digest" systems. The lives of women today, unfortunately, tilts us towards a chronic state of "fight or flight", leading to stress, anxiety, hormonal imbalances and potential other health issues. A nervous system reset, therefore, is about rebalancing these systems to foster overall health.

Signs You Need a Nervous System Reset

Recognizing the need for a reset is the first step towards healing. Some common signs include:
  • Chronic Fatigue: Feeling tired all the time despite getting enough sleep.
  • Persistent Anxiety: A state of ongoing worry or fear that disrupts daily life.
  • Digestive Issues: Problems such as bloating, constipation, or irritable bowel syndrome.
  • Sleep Disturbances: Difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep.
  • Emotional Overwhelm: Feeling easily overwhelmed or emotionally reactive (insert mom rage and guilt here!)
If you find yourself nodding to any of these symptoms, it's a signal from your body that a nervous system reset might be helpful.

The Path to Resetting Your Nervous System

Resetting your nervous system isn't a one-size-fits-all process but rather a journey tailored to your unique needs and lifestyle. Here, is an outline to a comprehensive approach that includes mindfulness, physical activity, nutrition, and sleep to guide you towards a state of calm and balance.

1. Mindfulness and Meditation

Mindfulness practices and meditation are powerful tools for calming the mind and engaging the parasympathetic nervous system (rest and digest). Starting your day with even five minutes of meditation can set a tone of calm and centeredness. Techniques such as mindful breathing, where you focus on the rhythm of your breath, prayer, positive montras or gratitudes, help anchor you in the present moment, reducing the physiological impact of stress.

2. Physical Activity

Regular movement is not just beneficial for your physical health but is also crucial for resetting your nervous system. Activities like yoga, gentle workouts, and even walking can stimulate the release of endorphins, the body's natural mood lifters. Not only that, but these activities promote better circulation and oxygenation, which can help in soothing the nervous system.

3. Nutrition for Nerves

The food we eat has a direct impact on our nervous system. A diet rich in omega-3 fatty acids, found in fish and flaxseeds, supports brain health and reduces inflammation. Magnesium, often referred to as the "relaxation mineral," found in leafy greens, nuts, and seeds, can help calm the nerves. Hydration is also key, as dehydration can lead to increased stress on the body.  When we are in "fight or flight" mode our digestive system slows down as it is not considered a necessary function for survival in case of real danger, so ensuring that we are helping our body enter "rest and digest" and providing it with the water and nutrients it needs to function at its best is so important.  Don't forget the connection between our gut and our brain for helping release seratonin (the happy hormone), it is all intimately linked.  Happy gut, happy hormones, happy nervous system, happy you!

4. The Power of Sleep

Sleep is the cornerstone of nervous system health. Quality sleep allows the body to repair and rejuvenate, significantly impacting our stress levels and emotional resilience. Creating a sleep-friendly environment (cool and dark), limiting exposure to screens before bed (you can set bed-time shut down timers to help keep you accountable), and establishing a calming bedtime routine (I like to go through my teeth brushing, face washing and sleep oil routines and then read for a few minutes to slow my brain down).  These can enhance your sleep quality, paving the way for a healthier nervous system.

Lifestyle Changes for Long-term Nervous System Health

Beyond the immediate steps to reset your nervous system, certain lifestyle adjustments can support long-term health and well-being.

Digital Detox

In a time dominated by digital devices, taking breaks from screens is essential. Constant connectivity can disrupt our body's natural rhythms and let's face it, so much of what we are watching is negative and increase our anxiety and cortisol levels. Implementing regular digital detox periods can help recalibrate your nervous system, allowing for more profound relaxation, positivity and recovery.

Social Connections

Humans are inherently social beings, and meaningful relationships play a critical role in our mental and emotional health. Make plans with friends to meet for dinner or coffee, have people over for a visit, join a book club (or any club that includes something you enjoy, you would be amazed at what is out there). Engaging in activities that strengthen your connections with others can provide emotional support and a sense of belonging, both of which are soothing for the nervous system.

Nature's Healing

Spending time in nature is a potent antidote to stress. Whether it's a walk in the park, a hike in the mountains, or simply sitting under a tree, nature's tranquility can significantly help in resetting your nervous system. The sights, sounds, and smells of the natural world have a unique and scientifically proven way of calming our minds and bodies.

Building Resilience

Resetting your nervous system is not just about dealing with immediate stress but also about building long-term resilience. This involves developing a toolkit of coping strategies and understanding what triggers your stress responses. Journaling, for instance, can be an effective way to process emotions and identify patterns in your stress responses, empowering you to manage them better in the future.

Conclusion

Starting out on a journey to reset your nervous system is a profound act of self-care and self-awareness. It's about listening to your body and mind, understanding your unique stress triggers, and taking deliberate steps towards health and happiness. In a world that often pulls us in a thousand directions, choosing to invest in your nervous system's health is choosing a path of resilience, vitality, and peace.

As you continue on this path, remember that it's not about perfection but progress. Each step you take towards understanding and caring for your nervous system is a step towards a healthier, more balanced you.

Meet Amanda Wilkison

Hi there! I'm Amanda, a health and wellness enthusiast. As a busy mother of two, I understand the challenges of balancing the demands of full-time work (I am an elementary school teacher) and motherhood. When I became a mom, I wanted nothing more than to provide a safe and nurturing environment for my children. However, I quickly realized the alarming number of harmful chemicals and toxins present in everyday products and the challenges of finding time to care for my own health.

Driven by the desire to protect my children and give them the best start in life, I embarked on a journey to find safer alternatives and learn how to fill my own cup. Along the way I discovered the incredible power of Young Living essential oils and their wide range of natural and effective products. Not only did these products support the wellbeing of my family, but they also helped me learn the importance of taking care of myself as well. It also led me to a new passion, learning as much as I coud about natural wellness and sharing it with other moms. Don't get me wrong, we are still users of the medical system and eat foods that are tasty and not always the most healthy, but we try very hard to live as healthy as possible to be preventative, rather than reactive.

Now I am on a mission to share and support other women just like me. I believe that everyone deserves access to safe and natural solutions that enhance their family's physical and emotional well-being. Through my blog, classes, email campaigns, personalized consultations, and support, I strive to help other moms find the same peace of mind and confidence in their choices.

Join me on this incredible journey as we navigate the path to a healthier, happier, and more harmonious life for you and your loved ones. Together, we can create a nurturing environment to help us lead a Happy, Healthy, Oiled life.

Amanda
