I just got back from my first vacation with no kids, ever! And though traveling opens the doors to new experiences, cultures, and unforgettable memories, it can also mean being out of your regular wellness routine, which is essential for maintaining balance and optimal wellness. Regardless of whether you're traveling for work or relaxation, keeping your well-being in check can make your journey much more enjoyable and fulfilling. Here are five of my travel essentials for maintaining natural wellness on the go.
1. Hydration is Key
Hydration might seem like an obvious point, yet it's often overlooked during the hustle and bustle of travel. Proper hydration supports various bodily functions, including temperature regulation, joint lubrication, nutrient transport as well as proper bowel movements. It also plays a significant role in maintaining energy levels and mood stability, both kind of important for optimal enjoyment while you are travelling.
When traveling, especially on long-hauls or in airplanes, the dry air can easily lead to dehydration. Investing in a good quality reusable water bottle can make it easier to keep hydrated wherever you are. If you're exploring a new city or hiking through nature, having clean and safe drinking water is very important. Infuse your water with slices of lemon, cucumber, or mint to make it more refreshing and to encourage you to drink more, as well as good quality salt (natrual electrolytes) to increase fluid retention.
2. Nutrient-Dense Snacks
Eating well while traveling can be challenging with the abundance of fast food and processed options available at airports or roadside stops, plus, if you are like me, trying good food is a big part of travelling to new places. Carrying a selection of nutrient-dense snacks can ensure that you have wholesome options on hand when hunger strikes.
Think wholesome options like nuts, seeds, dried fruits, or homemade granola bars as they are easy to pack and provide a good combination of healthy fats, proteins, and carbohydrates. Not only do they keep hunger at bay, but they also help maintain stable blood sugar levels, preventing the energy crashes and mood swings that often accompany less nutritious snacks.
Traveling also offers the opportunity to explore local markets. Opt for fresh fruits and vegetables that you can consume on the go. These are rich in vitamins and fiber, contributing to your overall wellness while allowing you to enjoy local flavors. Don't be afraid to eat some nice meals and try the local delicacies, but being proactive in having healthy foods on hand helps reduce the extra junk food snacking that comes from being hungry on the go.
3. Mind and Body Exercises
Keeping up with your fitness and relaxation routines can be challenging when you're on the road, but it’s not impossible. Incorporate a few simple exercises and mindfulness practices to keep your mind and body in harmony.
Start with light stretching or yoga each morning to prepare your body for the day’s adventures. This can be as short as a 10-minute routine focusing on relieving tension and promoting flexibility. Some poses are particularly travel-friendly, such as the downward dog, which can be done in the smallest of hotel rooms. Additionally, practicing mindfulness helps enhance mental clarity and reduce stress that can come hand-in-hand with travelling and being in unfamiliar territory.
Download a few guided meditation apps or audio tracks before your trip so you can participate even in a noisy environment.
Walking is another underrated yet highly effective exercise. Make it a point to explore your destinations on foot, soaking in the sights while fitting a physical activity naturally into your itinerary. And a bonus, it will help you burn off a few of those extra calories from those tasty local foods!
4. Rest and Recharge
It’s easy to underestimate the importance of rest when you’re filled with excitement about your travel plans. However, proper rest is crucial. Our bodies and minds need time to recharge, more so when undertaking the rigors of travel.
Packing a sleep mask and earplugs can work wonders for securing quality rest in unfamiliar situations, whether on a plane, train, or even a bustling city hotel. Consider using a calming bedtime routine to signal your body that it's time to wind down regardless of the time zone. Techniques like reading, journaling, or listening to calming music can promote deeper, more restorative sleep.
Additionally, try to resist the temptation to schedule every hour of your trip. Allow yourself to enjoy unstructured time – whether that means lounging at a café, enjoying a leisurely walk, or simply doing nothing at all. These moments of calm can actually enhance your appreciation of the journey.
5. Natural Remedies and Self-Care Products
Incorporate natural remedies and self-care products into your travel kit. Many travelers face issues such as travel sickness, headaches, or skin irritations, and having a natural remedy on hand can provide relief without needing to hunt down a pharmacy.
Choose products that are versatile and compact. A soothing herbal tea blend, for instance, can promote relaxation and digestion, helping you unwind after a long day. Basic first-aid items such as aloe vera gel can be used for sunburn or as a moisturizer in dryer climates.
When it comes to natural wellness, I am a big proponent of essential oils and natural supplements (Young Living is my company of choice). I bring essential oils like Peppermint to put on the back of my neck for muscle tension, headaches and creating a cooling sensation on hot days, Digize for tummy discomforts and Lavneder for its calming properties and skin support, but remember to customize your natural remedies kit based on your personal needs and the nature of your trip.
Conclusion
By planning ahead and prioritizing your health and well-being, you can ensure that your adventures are as enjoyable and memorable as possible. Taking the time to prepare adequately with these travel essentials means you’re not simply traveling, but doing so in a way that honors your body, mind, and spirit. Safe travels and happy exploring!
