5 Tips for Keeping Your Children’s Emotional Health Strong as We Transition into Fall & Winter

Hey Momma Bears,

As fall and winter set in, we can feel the shift in energy, can’t we? 

The shorter days, colder weather, and holiday buzz—it all brings a unique mix of joy and challenge. Our kiddos feel it, too. Helping them transition emotionally through these months can make a big difference in how they feel and how our days flow. Here are five simple ways to keep our children’s emotional health strong during the colder months.

  1. Keep a Consistent Rhythm
    Kids thrive on knowing what’s next—it gives them a sense of security. Aim to keep regular times for meals, play, and bedtime. It doesn’t have to be perfect! Just having a general rhythm gives kids a sense of calm and can keep those holiday jitters or winter blues at bay.
  2. Keep Moving Together
    Physical activity is a game-changer for everyone’s mood, but especially for our little ones. As temperatures drop, it can feel tough to stay active, so bring the fun indoors! Try a family dance party, a yoga session, or new games in the living room. Indoor sports or a quick walk bundled up in cozy layers can work wonders too. Movement keeps energy flowing and lifts everyone’s spirits.
  3. Prioritize Your Own Self-Care
    You know how it goes, Momma—when we’re running on empty, our kids pick up on it. Take a few minutes each day just for you, whether it’s a hot cup of tea, a cozy read, or a call with a friend. This small act of self-care helps us feel ready to support our kiddos with the love and energy they need.
  4. Create Cozy Corners
    There’s something about snuggling up that makes the colder months feel extra comforting. Make cozy little spaces in your home where everyone can unwind—a reading nook with blankets, a spot for family movie nights, or a quiet corner with soft lighting. These cozy spots help everyone feel safe, secure, and ready to relax. My kiddos like to make blanket forts, how about yours?
  5. Encourage a Grateful Heart
    With the holidays around the corner, it’s a perfect time to focus on gratitude. Make it a daily practice to chat about what each of you is thankful for, or even start a simple family gratitude journal. These moments of gratitude remind us to focus on the good and help ease holiday stress for all of us.
While seasonal changes can bring a mix of emotions, these small, thoughtful steps can help our kids (and us!) feel steady and supported.
