What is a holistic approach to self-care: A Holistic Mom's Guide to Refilling Her Cup

In the whirlwind of motherhood, where days merge into nights in endless cycles of feeding, caring, working, and organizing, it's easy to forget the woman behind the title of 'Mom'.
In the midst of nurturing our families, our own needs often take a backseat. But here's a gentle yet powerful reminder: self-care isn't selfish; it's absolutely essential.

As holistic moms, we're dedicated to fostering a nurturing environment for our children, our families,  emphasizing the importance of wellness and balance. We're often found enjoying moments with sips of herbal teas, engaging in play dates, and striving for a healthy home. But amidst caring for our families, do we remember to prioritize our own holistic well-being and apply these same principles to ourselves?

The old adage, "You can't pour from an empty cup," resonates deeply in the context of motherhood. This isn't just a quaint saying; it's a fundamental truth. When we neglect our own well-being, everything else in our life feels the strain. Our energy depletes, our patience wears thin, and our joy in the daily wonders of life starts to fade. Self-care is the act of replenishing this cup – not just with what we need to survive, but with what we need to thrive.

So, what does self-care look like for a holistic mom? It's as diverse and beautiful as we are. It could be a quiet morning with a cup of herbal tea, a few minutes of meditation before the chaos of the day begins, or a brisk walk in nature to clear the mind. (My personal favorite. ) It's about finding those small pockets of peace and claiming them for ourselves.

Have you ever considered journaling?  We can journal our thoughts to understand our inner world better or engaging in a short yoga session to reconnect with our bodies. Maybe it's preparing a nutritious smoothie that's just for us or simply taking an hour away from screens to read a book, soak in a bath, or practice deep breathing.

Recently, I've been dismayed by negative comments about mothers who consider taking a bath as self-care. Mocking motherhood is hurtful and unnecessary. Motherhood is a busy and demanding time, and every moment is precious. For many moms, especially those new to the role or those juggling the needs of multiple children, finding time for oneself is a challenge. We often choose quicker showers over relaxing baths simply because it's practical—it's not an invitation for criticism. It's essential to tune out the negativity and focus on what makes us feel rejuvenated and loved. Let's honor our choices and embrace the small moments of peace.

And here's the key: self-care needs to be a habit, not an afterthought. It requires us to consciously make time for it amidst our busy schedules. This week, I challenge you to choose at least 2-3 self-care activities – whether from a list or ones you hold dear – and commit to them. Share some of your favorite activities in the comments below this blog post and let's inspire each other.

As a little gift to help you on this journey, I've created a 'Self-Care Bingo' template – a fun, visual way to track your self-care activities. It's a free PDF, and I'm offering it as a token of encouragement to all you wonderful holistic moms out there. Remember, when you thrive, your family thrives. Let's fill our cups together.
