My 7 favorite things to take on a camping trip. | Verna Smoker

Camping for a week by the lake is a tradition for our family each summer.

After many years of camping there are a few must have essentials I take with us that make our camping trips easier and more functional. I would not to want to be without these items.

1. Lavender

Lavender oil is something I always take with me when we go camping. It is antimicrobial and antiseptic, while promoting healing.

On our last camping trip I used lavender for a bee sting, a very bad sunburn on one of the kids and I diffused it at night in the camper for a good restful night of sleep.

You may also need it for any of these issues....

. Alleviating blisters

. Treating bruises
. Soothing burns (including sunburns!)
. Healing cuts and sores
. Soothing insect bites
. Repelling insects
. Calming rashes
. Healing wounds
. Relieving muscle cramps and stiffness
. Treating sprains and strains in ligaments, muscles, or tendon

2. Peppermint Spray

This year I filled a 16 oz. spray bottle and put 20 drops of peppermint and 20 drops of purification oil in and filled it with water. Every morning and evening I sprayed the tent screens that we used as a kitchen and it was the first year that we were not bothered by ants and gnats. Yes, we had a few but I immediately sprayed all around the tent, screens and ceiling and it worked so good!

Feeling Nauseous or ate too many smores right before bed?

Put 3 drops of peppermint oil onto a wash cloth. Hold it under your nose and breathe slowly and deeply for 1-3 minutes or apply a drop or two on your belly.

3. Tea Tree Oil

It's a powerful anti-inflammatory, antiseptic and antimicrobial essential oil to add to your camping first-aid kit.

Here are the many ways you can use whether you’re out camping or spending time in your backyard:

  • Excellent disinfectant for cuts, scrapes, and bruises
  • Soothing sunburn
  • Repelling mosquito bites
  • Soothing bug bites
  • Relieving a stuffy nose

4. Insect repellent ….. A must!
This is one I cannot live with out in the summer. Not only does it smell amazing but it is so silky and simply glides on your skin. You can feel good about using it on your kids because it does not have harsh chemicals in it. The flies and bugs will pass right pass you!

5. SEEDLINGS WIPES

It’s easy to forget about washing my face before bed each night while camping… simply because I’m not in my normal routine. But to make it easy and quick I use these to wash my face. They smell not only super amazing but they do a super job in making your face sparkly clean. I’m all for quick and easy!

  • Remove makeup in a pinch.
  • Moisten eyeliner/eyeshadow and brush for smooth application.
  • Touch up eye makeup mistakes.
  • Wipe messy hands and face.
  • Easy travel cleanup.
  • Calm fussy baby.
  • Mid-day hygiene freshener (especially in summer)
  • Quick shoe clean up.

6. Thieves Fruit And Veggie Spray

Since I’m not a fan of eating dirty fruit and vegetables full of grime and chemical sprayed on them, this is a must have to keep all my fruits and veggies clean as a whistle.

7. To prevent car sickness and upset stomachs while traveling...

keep these essential oils handy.
  • Ginger - Ginger can soothe an upset stomach.
  • Orange - This oil can keep your little ones calm and happy while traveling. The scent is quite lovely and one that everyone will enjoy.
  • Digize - Apply one or 2 drops on your belly if it's just not feeling quite right. You can also put a drop in a capsule and swallow it or ... add a drop in a glass of water or juice.( Note, only use Young Living Vitality Brand when ingesting oils.)

Meet Verna Smoker

The moment we heard the doctor say…

“ITS A BOY”

My husband and I were over the top excited with the birth of our second child.

Those words were music to our ears, UNTIL the music was drowned out by, “Your baby boy has a birth defect, your son is born with spina bifida”. The next few days were a blur of emotions. I was scared, really scared.

I was 22 years old. We were young parents. This was not suppose to happen!

We were told that our baby would need a shunt placed in the ventricles of his brain to relieve the pressure of the spinal fluid on his brain, better known as, hydrocephalus. This was all so foreign and terrifying. Surgery after surgery became our baby’s life.

FEAR, SADNESS, ANGER, DISAPPOINTMENT, GUILT and BLAME on MYSELF became part of my world. Would our baby boy have brain damage? Would he walk? Let alone…live?

Surgeries and long hospital stays all took a toll on my emotional well being.

Instead of being raw and vulnerable with my feelings, I buried them. I was “Super Mom” (or at least that’s what I thought). I learned to wear a mask and I was good at it. I looked the part and I acted the part because I was “Super Mom”.

However, I pushed my feelings down DEEPI pretended they were not there. This way I DID NOT NEED TO FEEL so deeply. It took awhile to notice, years to be exact, but I was slowly losing control of my emotions. My stress was going through the roof. Panic attacks and depression became real in my life.

Years passed....

At the age of 23, our son developed a brain infection which caused him to have colonic status seizures (you know, the kind that do not stop except through medicinal interventions). TERRIFYING to watch!

To top it all off, my husband survived a heart attack (thankfully he is doing well), my mom died of breast cancer, and a few years later my dad died of bladder cancer.

All of this added even MORE STRESS and WORRY.

By Gods grace, and because of our deep faith in HIM, we have and continue to weather the storms.

Because of the RESEARCH I've done, today, WE DO LIFE differently. We’ve discovered ways to implement and make changes that support our IMMUNE SYSTEMS as well as our EMOTIONAL and BRAIN health. We’ve made changes in the amount of TOXINS that we surround ourselves with. We have become more aware of how “toxic exposure” has an affect on the internal structure of our brain and can trigger both short and long term effects.

I’ve also found ways to manage my stress level. Those terrifying panic attacks no longer torment me. We have  found the tools we need to live our BEST LIFE, and for that, I am grateful.

It's our life, and though there are parts of it that we continue to look for solutions in, we will continue to move forward.

LIFE IS A JOURNEY, and it is BEAUTIFUL.

If any part of my story connects with your own story I would love to chat and connect with you.
