I started using Essential Oils simply because my mama visited with her new brand starter kit, raved about it, and I had birthday money! Six years later it was one of the best unexpected blessing to our family.
I had never really thought about essential oils even though I had already been on a wellness journey for a few years due to an imbalance of hormones triggered by birth control.
I had focused so much on what I put IN my body and MOVING my body (weight gain was a HUGE symptom for me with my hormones out of wack!)
I also am OVER THE MOON excited about the emotional + hormonal support essential oils/ supplements that have been a GAME CHANGER for my cycle and motherhood!
Favorite Ways I use Young Living for....
-Kiddos sleepy routine-
Every night we (the kiddos know what to do) fill up their diffuser and add about 4 drops of Lavender Oil and and 4 drops Peace & Calming (smells so dreamy). Or we love the Sleepyize blend which makes ME want to fall asleep putting them down. I also have rollerballs of Valor (amazing support when kids are too anxious to fall asleep) and peace & Calming. I will rub them on the kids feet, their wrist and a little on their spine and give them a tiny massage, or they will simply open the bottle up and smell it while laying bed.
Lavender is a herb that is widely known to help with nervousness, anxiety, stress, and sleeplessness. It doesn’t make you sleepy like taking a sleeping pill would, but what it does do is help take the edge off of sleeplessness.
Glow Serum, my face is obsessed with this!
You can make it two ways:
One way in a roller bottle so I can just roll it on my cheekbones when I want a little glow after putting my makeup on. The other way I make it is in a little dropper and drop a few drops into the palm of my hand and rub it all over my face like a moisturizer.
You can literally get rid of ALL of your moisturizers and just use this (plus sunscreen). All you need is Frankincense and Copaiba Essential Oils, both come in your starter kit (see info at the end of this post).
I also have been applying Frankincense directly to a pimple or fine lines! DO IT!
I highly recommend using the Think Dirty App to identify the potential risks associated with the personal care products you use everyday, this is where I started.
Frankincense- Anti-Aging & Wrinkle Fighting supporter. Frankincense essential oil is a powerful astringent, meaning it helps protect skin cells. It can be used to help support acne blemishes, the appearance of large pores, prevent wrinkles, and it even helps lift and tighten skin to naturally slow signs of aging.
-Immune Boost-
When my wonderful doctor prescribed me Thieves + Frankincense to help boost our whole families immune system during a season of sickness, that was a GAME CHANGER, especially Frank down the spine!! We also rub the roller bottle on the bottom of our feet each morning, then put their socks on. I have read that the main thing with oils is consistency and its so true!
-Detangler-
We use a detangler almost everyday for my girl. I was excited to find a recipe to make my own that is non-toxic and also has health benefits. I Young Living Lavender Mint Conditioner, combined with distilled water and Essential Oils.
-Cleaning-
I have used just vinegar and water for YEARS and years and HATED the smell. Now I use Thieves and add in whatever essential oils to make it smell the way I want it to! Thieves also has liquid hand soap, laundry detergent and more that I have been using (and love, again, super budget friendly!)
-Essential Oils for Wool Dryer Balls-
After I did some research we quickly got rid of all dryer sheets and fabric softeners from our house. I use THESE Wool Dryer Balls and I add a couple drops of Lavender, Purification or Thieves Essential Oils to each ball. Make sure the oil absorbs in before tossing in with your clothes. If you deal with your clothes still being staticky, that is due to over-drying. So decrease your drying time. If you still have an issue you attach a safety pin to your dryer balls or some toss in a ball of tinfoil, problem solved!
-Diffusing-
We have completely gotten away from candles because of how toxic they are, I was so frustrated to learn this. The money I wasted on candles was ridiculous AND it was harming out bodies.
The problem is that I just LOVE, like really LOVEEEEEEE the ambiance that candles add. I am an enneagram 4, so yea, I love my environment to be cozy. I gave a diffuser a go, I had nothing to loose. I cannot imagine life without my diffusers now! I put one in every single room in our home, for real.
My favorite thing about the diffusers we have is that they have lights inside, like a soft lamp!
You can diffuse whatever you are needing- calm, energy, headache relief, help relive a cough and more. There is even a combo to duplicate my favorite Anthropologie candle- the Volcano. And I made sure to get diffusers for the kids rooms that they are a diffuser and humidifier combo. One of my favorites to diffuse is just Peace & Calming Essential Oil. It smells so good and it has helps ALL OF US to relax. I used to diffuse it before the kids get home from school and the homework, but now its going all the time with them home!

A woman's cycle is regulated by an interaction of multiple hormones, which regulate the activity of tissues (and cells) within our organs. If our hormones are off balance, it can feel as though our entire life is off balance. (I can speak from experience!)
The effects can range from gaining weight for no reason, to fluid or fat in the wrong places, mood swings, hot flashes, anxiety, depression or sleep issues.
Understanding our normal cycle can help us understand what is happening when we have symptoms during menopause or perimenopause.
When a woman is fertile, she has a menstrual cycle which is typically 28-30 days, with day one of her monthly cycle starting the first day of bleeding.
There are three phases to a menstrual cycle: follicular, ovulatory, + luteal.
A menstrual cycle is the rise and fall of hormones such as estrogen and progesterone and results in an egg growing and the lining of the uterus thickening.
A woman typically gets her first period between 12 and 16 years of age and continues to have a cycle until around age 45-48, where she is then perimenopausal or enters full menopause.
there are 3 phases to menopause:
Perimenopause refers to the years leading up to full menopause, which is where the production of hormones begin to decline and create an imbalance for some women. It starts with a drop in progesterone followed by lower estrogen production.
As a result, periods become light or less frequent. Symptoms can include short-cycles, trouble sleeping or frequent waking, night sweats and the most common, anxiety. Such symptoms can be reduced or eliminated fully when hormones are balanced and supported.
In clinical practice, we see 50% of such symptoms be completely resolvable with lifestyle and food changes, including proper and healthy stress management.
Perimenopause starts at age 45 or older and can last up to five or six years before entering full menopause.
2. Menopause
The official definition of menopause is when you do not have a period for 12 months or more. The average age for menopause is 51 years.
Much like perimenopause, hormone levels continue to drop with estrogen taking the biggest drop.
A secondary concern for low estrogen levels is bone loss. Estrogen promotes osteoblasts, which are cells necessary to produce bone. If we are low in estrogen, we are not able to effectively absorb calcium which is needed to build bone mass.
3. Postmenopause
The years following menopause is referred to as postmenopause. Unpleasant symptoms, such as hot flashes and night sweats, typically stop at this time.
However, due to the reduction in estrogen, there is a continued concern for bone loss and osteoporosis.
Why We Experience Menopause Symptoms
Symptoms during menopause can affect over 75% of women going through this transition.
Oftentimes, symptoms can be contributed to sleep quality, toxins, dietary choices, and stress levels.
Sleep is so important to our body.
Simply said, if we are not sleeping, we cannot heal. Poor sleep can be due to external factors such as poor sleep hygiene or hypoglycemia, stress, high cortisol or an imbalance in neurotransmitters.
A circadian rhythm issue is often at the root of sleep issues, as well. Getting a good night's rest is one of the most important things we can do for our hormones!
The foods we eat, and whether they are organic or not can have an effect on how we process and eliminate our hormones.
Amino acids (proteins), and compounds in fruits and vegetables all play an important role in liver detoxification.
If we are consuming foods which have pesticides and chemicals, they will act as additional hormones in our body, which further builds the case to eat organic.
A simple trick to help you use the protein you are eating is to add collagen or broth to your muscle meat (not organ meats), which will decrease their inflammatory potential and increase the bioavailability of their amino acids.
If you are over 50, this is a rule you should faithfully follow.
Cortisol is the main stress hormone in our body and is secreted during times of stress, low or high blood sugar, or infection/inflammation.
Cortisol is huge when it comes to our sex hormones being in balance. Hormones can be off balance and it is often due to high-stress levels.
Women in menopause can have low cortisol during the day and high cortisol at night, creating even further chaos (there’s that circadian rhythm issue we mentioned above which is commonly known as adrenal fatigue).
While cellular repair and rejuvenation are what we need at this point, most women are given selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) or antidepressants instead of addressing the root cause and getting hormones checked.
Common Symptoms During Menopause
Hot flashes which are sudden temperature increases and feeling flushed for no reason at all. Hot flashes can also simultaneously happen with night sweats.
Night Sweats are due to changes in hormone levels, which affect the body's internal temperature regulating thermostat.
Weight Gain can be a big symptom when going through menopause. This is not due to overeating or not working out enough. A slowed metabolism means less cellular energy and impaired thyroid function, usually suppressed by stress hormones—this leads to weight gain, bloating and depression.
Brain fog or mood swings throughout the day can be a big symptom during menopause. This is typically due to low neurotransmitter levels and hormone imbalances, which contribute to low cortisol output and poor cognitive function. Anxiety can also occur and be non-stop, usually due to low progesterone levels.
Vaginal dryness, as well as low libido, can occur during menopause. This is typically due to the body producing less lubrication due to the reduction in estrogen production.
You know if you have experienced these symptoms or have a loved one who has experienced them, they are no fun at all!
The good news is you can take steps now and transform the way you enter menopause in the future or reduce current symptoms you have now, while in menopause.
Sleep Well
Creating a sleep routine which both supports deeper sleep and reduces waking times during the night is so important to healing.
Reduce Caffeine
Start to reduce caffeine by starting to replace your regular cup of joe with decaf or aim to get real energy from medicinal mushrooms. Lion’s mane is a medicinal mushroom especially targeted at healing the nervous system. Secondly, foods which can give you energy (and nutrients!), such as wild blueberries, leafy greens, superfoods, and herbs, can help with the transition off of caffeine (as can foods high in vitamin C).
Avoid Plastics & Obesogens
These interfere with our metabolism and the production of hormones. It is best to avoid drinking hot liquids out of plastic! Use reusable glass bottles as much as possible and check out our environmental blog for more tips on replacing plastics.
Gut Health
Healthy production of hydrochloric acid (HCL) and digestive enzymes is important at any age; however, it becomes more important as we grow older. HCL is part of a gastric secretion which is needed for proper digestion, especially protein digestion. Sometimes, adding it in short-term can help support your body in producing enough HCL on its own.
Fatigue can be a huge issue during this time of transition. A water-soluble vitamin, which is known to support the immune system (as well as the adrenals and HPA-axis), vitamin C is essentially the backbone to collagen production and necessary for mitochondrial health (also known as energy production). Want to know my favorite, just ask!
Magnesium
We love magnesium and typically recommend taking either orally or applying topically. Magnesium is well known for its benefits of muscle relaxation but is needed for so much more.
Magnesium also supports:
- Adrenal + thyroid health
- Estrogen detoxification
- Glutathione production
- Production of neurotransmitters, such as serotonin
Signs of low magnesium can be:
- Muscle spasms
- Anxiety
- Feelings of weakness
- Insomnia
- Poor appetite
Be sure to include magnesium supplements (or food sources of magnesium) before getting to the point of deficiency, as it is essential to the body. When choosing a magnesium supplement, we recommend glycinate or magnesium oil.
Breathing Smart
We take over 20-30,000 breaths per day. Breathing is so essential to our wellbeing, as it regulates the body. Respiration is the intake of oxygen and the release of carbon dioxide, so make sure to stop and pause to breathe in and out through your nose, making your exhalations longer than your inhalations.
Alternate Nostril Breathing
When possible, do this breathing exercise before you go to bed. Alternate Nostril Breathing is a powerful breathing technique used in yoga for stress relief and to balance the left and right hemispheres of the brain, which ultimately allows your creative mind and your logical mind to work in complete harmony—giving you greater access to all of YOU.
B Vitamins
B6, B12, niacin, thiamine (B1), pantothenic acid (B5), biotin, and folate (B9) are essential for energy, mood, and cognitive function. They all have specific benefits and unless you have tested to see which B vitamins you are deficient in, we typically recommend a high-quality B complex. Buyer beware, as not all B vitamins are created equally. We want them in a methylated form so that our body can fully utilize and reap the benefits. Want to know my favorite one? Just ask!
Vitamin E
This fat-soluble vitamin serves as both a vitamin and an antioxidant, which supports our brain, hormones, and heart. A 2007 study showing the benefits of vitamin E looked at a control group of menopausal women taking vitamin E for a period of 4 weeks. The results show a significant difference in the reduction of hot flashes in the group of women taking vitamin E when compared to those who were not.
I hope you’ve gleaned a better understanding of this later hormonal phase of life and gained a few new powerful natural tools you can consistently use to make this time in your life exceptional and more graceful.

In research done on liquid minerals (the best form for absorption), participants were found to have adverse effects on the liquid minerals without essential oils, whereas those effects were completely eliminated with the addition of essential oils. This plus the additional increase in synergy and bioavailability makes mineral supplements like Young Living's Mineral Essence much more effective than other mineral supplements on the market.
Here's another example: Before putting essential oils in Young Living's MultiGreens supplement, there was a 42% absorption of the nutrients in 24 hours. With the addition of YL essential oils, blood absorption increased to 64% in 30 minutes and 86% in one hour. What?
If you want to get the most for your money and the most nutrients and health benefits possible for your body,
look into Young Living's vast supplements, they have so many!

The psoas is a deep hip flexor responsible for granting us the ability to bring the knee into the body and bend at the hips. It also stabilizes the pelvis and helps us to stand upright. It is the only muscle that crosses the body from back to front, beginning in the lumbar vertebrae and crossing the front of the body to insert high in the inner thigh at the lesser trochanter. This muscle also crosses through the lumber plexus of the spine, a highly nervy center - this explains why this muscle is regarded so highly as an emotional muscle. It is a major player for everything involving physical movement...even sitting down!
Being an emotional muscle implies that when this muscle is manually treated, an emotional response will likely occur. These types of responses include crying, coughing, having a tickle response, or having an aversion to being touched in that area. Therefore, we must approach with caution, reverence and care.
The Psoas Muscle Explained
There is so much more to the psoas that the anatomical explanation of why it can be perceived as the most emotional place within our body. In regards to emotion, the other part of this muscle is one that we often do not discuss. If a person has experienced trauma as a result of someone placing their hands on them without consent, this is the muscle memory area that will hold on for dear life. This is also why the illnesses that include the sexual reproductive organs will likely (but not always) be coupled with a trauma that has occurred in the person’s life in or around that particular area. Every single trauma that occurs in one’s life is locked and loaded into the cellular memory, the mental/cognitive memory, and the muscle memory. Too many people have stories to tell of a time that someone tried to exert power over their bodies and walked away guiltless. Almost every single woman I know has a story to tell, and nowadays, a lot of men do as well. This is not OK.
Our bodies are the ones that try to hide the evidence, as if we talk about it too much, it might actually take us down a path that we fear we might not ever come back from. The pain, anguish, shame, and guilt, along with the wish that we had handled it more loudly, more effectively, sooner, better…it all lives in our muscles (especially the psoas muscle) as much as it lives in our (mental) memories. And if something is too traumatic and the mind chooses to file it away in a cabinet that is to never be opened again, it is only by way of the physical body and energy body that we can make it into that vault for release. It is either through cognitive therapy or through touch therapy that the body will be able to release the experience.
The Body Tells A Story
Someone who does not like to be touched will not respond well to touch therapy of any kind. They will need to find their healing through the cognitive route. Treatment like EMDR (eye movement desensitization reprocessing) are highly beneficial. At the moment of impact from a trauma, the experience freezes in time. Even as you grow and mature, this particular point of impact does not. Think of it as a memory groove; the groove never changes once it has been carved into the body. Learning how to approach the body and the mind to help them process is how healing can occur. Someone who cannot handle discussion or is unwilling to open that mental vault can heal in enormous ways by having someone help their body tell the story and release the pain. This would likely include treatments, such as reiki or therapeutic touch, as well as muscle work to treat the physical and energy patterns that have locked in the trauma.
Each person has a specific pathway for healing, and all we can do is help them to find it and support their process. In this day and age when the older, white male political population is having its last hurrah over women’s bodies, we are screaming for understanding, comfort, and the opportunity for someone to meet us exactly where we are and see us for who we truly are. Whenever possible, try to take the yoga path into healing...even if that person doesn’t practice. Meet them where they are. Not where you want them to be, but simply where they are. And if it’s you who needs someone to meet you where you are, honor your body and your process. Simply be aware of it without placing demands on yourself.
We must be willing to address all of these aspects in order to form the whole. Feel the pain, and don’t put a time limit on your grieving process. No one has the right to tell you how to grieve or for how long. No one has the right to tell you how to go about your healing process, either. Healing can be messy. But…messy can also be really, really beautiful.

There are five key hormones that must be balanced, if we are to maintain healthy body weight with ease, once and for all—and consequentially, have deep sleep, steady energy, healthy digestion, immunity, and that natural glow to our skin, eyes, hair, and nails that hormonal balance brings.
Cortisol
Insulin
Testosterone
Estrogen
Individually, these hormones are all unique and have different roles within the body; together they create balance and harmony which allows us to achieve our natural body weight and a healthy, harmonious experience of life.
Stress (cortisol) and undereating or eating the wrong foods can be detrimental to our thyroid and halt the production of thyroid hormone.
Symptoms of low thyroid include:
Weight gainBrain fog
Depression
Fatigue
Constipation
And brittle nails
2. Cortisol
Cortisol is the main stress hormone in the body, produced by the adrenal glands. While cortisol is absolutely necessary for our body, there can be too much of a good thing.
Symptoms of high cortisol include:
Trouble sleeping through the nightNervousness
Anxiousness and anxiety
And not much of an appetite, especially first thing in the morning
Low cortisol conversely can cause:
LethargyDepression
Aches and pains
And complete exhaustion
3. Insulin
Insulin can be the main culprit in weight loss resistance and once an imbalance starts it can be a difficult rollercoaster to get off of. Insulin can be quick to become imbalanced due to stress and poor dietary choices, making your cells essentially numb.
Insulin resistance or even just poor glycemic control can lead to symptoms of both hypoglycemia and elevated glucose levels, both which can make you hold on to weight in spite of what you might have thought were your best efforts.
4. Testosterone
Testosterone is a key sex hormone that is required by both men and women. Testosterone is essential for fertility, muscle mass and growth, fat distribution and bone health. It can be common in women (and men) for testosterone to decline naturally with age; however, it is very important to not take the hormone testosterone without doing a hormone panel.
Taking endogenous testosterone can lead to a build-up of androgenic hormones and unpleasant side effects for women, including facial hair, muscle growth, headaches, mood swings, and weight gain.
Not having or producing enough testosterone can also make you gain weight and not be able to build any muscle.
On the topic of androgens, Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) can also be an issue and influence hormone balance and weight. Typically, this includes high fasting glucose, high sex hormones and their precursors such as testosterone and DHEA.
Symptoms of PCOS include:
Acne
Facial hair
Elevated blood sugar
And weight gain
With PCOS your body cannot clear hormones effectively.
5. Estrogen
Estrogen is the fifth hormone which is mainly responsible for giving women their figure. Estrogen is made in the ovaries and needs to be in balance with progesterone. There is a delicate line between having too little and too much estrogen.
High estrogen or estrogen dominance can make weight loss very challenging for both men and women.
Signs of High Estrogen:
An increase in appetiteIncrease in water retention
And fat storage “in weird places”
& cellulite
If you are over 45, be sure to check out our blog about estrogen and to find out if taking bioidentical hormones is a smart choice for you. This hormone should not have been demonized as it has been, especially with regard to our menopausal years.
When I was in private practice, I saw hundreds of women who were so frustrated because they were not eating much and they were exercising but still not losing weight, or worse, steadily gaining it with no known explanation.
They felt like their body was being invaded and they were becoming someone different on the outside than they were on the inside. While this is a horrifying feeling, the good news is that it is possible to balance your hormones at any age and to reclaim your sense of self.
When we are experiencing the above symptoms, it is all too common to add more hormones through bioidentical hormone therapy or other methods. While this can work wonders for some, if we add additional hormones into a stressed body that is already in chaos, the body will often react negatively or will not know what to do with the extra hormones. This results in hormones going through the wrong pathway or not being detoxified correctly, leading to weight gain, anxiety, skin or immune reactions, and added stress.
There are two strategies we have used with wonderful results in private practice and just recently in the Adrenal ReCode program. (right now its 50% off, ask me for the code!)
These 2 pillars include:
Converting food efficiently to fuelAnd reviewing the importance of macronutrient ratios
These two well executed, alone, take care of insulin, cortisol, and thyroid hormone by helping to regulate blood sugar, balance stress hormones, and shuttle active thyroid hormone into the cell, therefore creating balance.
From there, the liver will get healthier and be able to detoxify excess estrogen and you will be able to get the sex hormone balance your body needs because it will be able to pull from healthy stress hormone precursors to create the testosterone it needs.
Converting Food To Fuel
Over 80% of the population is not able to actually utilize the food they consume into appropriate fuel for the body, which is part and parcel of why our society is so darn tired all the time and reaching for quick fixes like coffee or processed sugar.
The foods we eat should benefit us to the fullest, revving our cellular energy centers (mitochondria) and brain, and supporting our microbiome. If we can include foods which are synergistic to our adrenals, thyroid, brain, and nervous system, we can then effectively kick-start the healing process.

The Importance Of Macronutrient Ratios For Hormonal Health
Macronutrients include:
CarbohydratesFats
And proteins
The issue with diets today: they often cut out one group, such as low-fat, low-carb, high-fat.
When we do that, we cannot expect our body to succeed long term.
There is a reason we have three types of macronutrients; they all have important benefits for our health.
The number one question we get when speaking about macronutrient ratios is, “what percentage do you recommend?”
The answer to this is so unique and is dependent on your own body's feedback
If you are coming from a low or no carbohydrate diet, start slow with adding carbohydrates back in, like â…› cup twice a day. You will need to train your body to metabolize carbs once again, versus storing them as fat.
Alternatively, if you have been consuming a low-fat diet for a long period of time, see how you feel adding a ½ teaspoon of fat into your meals and gradually work up from there.
