Are you are feeling overwhelmed, moody, need more motivation, can’t stay focused or need calming and peaceful feelings throughout your day?
You might have heard claims how essential oils can help with all of this. But… is it possible that just inhaling oils can affect people in such a strong way?
Yes! I have found oils to be very beneficial for me and my family. Maybe a best kept secret that really needs to be told!
How does stress affect our emotions?
Our bodies are made up of millions of cells, all carrying hormones and chemicals throughout our bodies.
When we receive bad news our brain signals our body to make emotional chemicals to make us feel sad, anxious and even have panic attacks.
Other functions in the body may change as well. Your heart may be racing or you may cry or sweat profusely. Our bodies are designed to protect us from dangers and the brain creates these chemicals responses.
-I have found that the best way to support our emotions is to to inhale a 100% pure essential oil.
Olfactory nervous system…. What is it?

An aroma is inhaled and travels to the olfactory system, which is responsible for controlling our sense of smell. The olfactory system is connected to the limbic system, where our memories and emotions live. The limbic system then produces a response.
Our sense of smell is estimated to be 10,000 times more acute then other senses.
Have you ever smelled something and be instantly taken back to a memory, a place, or a situation?
Maybe it’s the smell of fresh bread taking you back to your childhood as you walked into your Grandma's kitchen. Or … maybe it’s a certain perfume you wore that triggers memories back to your first love.
It could actually be a good or bad experiences that bring about an emotion. This is because the sense of smell is linked to some of the oldest and deepest parts of the brain. That response comes from each of our olfactory nervous systems.
Did you know ... out of all the five human senses, smell is the most direct way to access our mood, memory, emotions, and even physiology? It’s a direct way to impact our mood and health.
Smell is processed in the limbic system, the oldest part of the brain in evolutionary. The limbic system is one hard-working region of the brain. It is connected to the parts of our brain that controls our emotions, stress levels, hormone balance, sexual feelings, memory and learning. It also controls anger, fear and violent behavior. Essential oils can have a direct physiological and psychological effects.
Essential oils have trillions of molecules inside 1 little drop of a 100% pure essential oils. Please know your farmer and make sure you are only using pure oils. This is so important!
When you use an oil by diffusing it or applying it topically to the body these molecules are breathed in or absorbed into the bloodstream and a chemical reaction occurs in the body.
Aromatic essential oil molecules are absorbed in the cilia of the nose, where one end of the olfactory receptors reside, then travel to the olfactory epithelium at the top portion of the nose. The cribriform plate of the ethmoid bone delivers the aroma message to the olfactory bulb located above and behind the nose at the base of the brain. From here the message is amplified and then transmitted to the limbic system and the hypothalamus.
Sounds like a lot of science but really, if you think about how we are fearfully and wonderfully made by our creator, it’s pretty incredible!
When you inhale tiny molecules of essential oils you are communicating directly with your feeling area of the brain and that is why aromatherapy can play a big part in stress reduction. All because of it’s destination and create the appropriate neurochemicals to affect a physical response.
So the next time you smell something that transports you back in time, well ... “thanks for the memory” to your limbic system.
