1. Learn, Learn, Learn Stimulates... Learn a variety of new things that are unrelated to what you normally do. Variety is key.. meet new people, learn a new skill, learn to dance, learn a new language, take up knitting, writing, calligraphy, etc. Another way is to sharpen your No. 2 pencils and go back to school. “New brain cell growth can happen even late into adulthood,” says Dr. Vahia. “The process of learning and acquiring new information and experiences, can stimulate that process


2. Sing! ... hmm, who knew?


Singing brings joy to many people - but did you know that your passion for singing can lead to incredible benefits in your physical, emotional,and social health? Singing about your worries activates your right hemisphere which is responsible for pattern recognition. Making music in any form is relaxing. Singing releases stored muscle tension and decreases the levels of a stress hormone called cortisol in your blood stream. Singing can boosts your immune system, releases stress, benefits your heart, increases your energy, Improves your memory, fosters clear thinking through correct breathing. So ... so...sing away!


         




3. Exercise, Exercise, Exercise – Just walking for 30 minutes a day will stimulate cell growth and repair in your brain. Healthy blood flow in your brain strengthens and maintains your neuronal connections. It doesn’t matter whether you do weight training, pilates or jog. Every type of exercise is a different drug with its own benefits. Rest is important for managing stress. Research shows that inadequate sleep is linked to slower thinking and more risk for dementia. Individual needs vary greatly—but most guidelines recommend getting seven to nine hours of sleep a night.

 




4. Eat dark chocolate ... yep, I can do that, no prob.

Chocolate Improves Learning, Memory, and Focus Dark and increases blood flow to the brain (and heart). Dark Chocolate actually helps regulate blood sugar. It is also full of antioxidants and minerals, including Phenylethylamine (PEA) the love drug.

Avoid Trans-Fats. They harden your cell membranes and make your brain slow. 





5. Do Brain Teasers, games and puzzles. Solve crosswords, etc. Doing some type of mental exercise, in the form of brain teasers or word and number games can:

  • Boost overall brain activity.
  • Increase your memory power.
  • Reduce the risk, and slow the decline, of dementia.
  • Improve memory and brain processing speed.
  • Reduce boredom.
  • Improve concentration.



6. Be Social-Interact with friends...

  Instead of watching Netflix or scrolling Facebook, Caccappolo says, spend as much time as you can with friends. Why? "When you're socializing, the blood circulates to several different parts of your brain as you're listening and formulating responses," she explains. Social interactions can reduce stress and lower blood pressure. Research has shown that by interacting with others, we actually train our brains. Social motivation and social contact can help to improve memory formation and recall and protects the brain from neurodegenerative diseases.

Why would I use a vitality oil to cook and bake 


1. For me personally I have tried to grow an herb garden but for one reason or another I have not had much success. I'm sure it's do to my own negligence of not watering properly. So ... to have the convenience of a vitality oil is perfect for me.

Ingredients

  • 4 cups unsweetened almond, dairy, or other milk of your choice 
  • 8 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa 
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 4 teaspoons honey, or more to taste
  • 4 drops Lavender Vitality essential oil

Instructions

  1. Heat 4 cups of milk in a saucepan on medium-high heat.
  2. Add 8 tablespoons unsweetened raw cocoa, 1 teaspoon vanilla extract, and 4 teaspoons honey; whisk until smooth.
  3. When warm, remove from heat and stir in 4 drops Lavender Vitality essential oil.
  4. Serve and enjoy!

My body says sleep, my Bain says ... but I'm not tired!

Good health starts with GOOD SLEEP! It is literally as important as

good nutrition and exercise. 


But I'm not tired! Then what? ... I'm learning I must retrain my brain to go to bed at a decent hour or I will suffer the consequences 

Here are ways I get a good night of sleep and keep my immune system strong.

Essential Oils ... The key to health and wellness



Six years ago I started my journey with essential oils and It has literally changed the way I think about my health. 


What I mean is….instead of calling to make a Dr appointment as a first line of defense, now I simply reach for an oil. It may sound crazy but it's really not. Essential oils have become a HOUSEWORD word. In fact, 6 years ago I had to explain what an Essential oil was and now ... 5 years later I teach on WHY the quality of an Essential Oil is so important. Are you overwhelmed just thinking about oils? I don’t blame you! I was too when I first started. 


I had no idea how to use an oil let alone what to use it for … even more importantly ... I had no idea how powerful they really were! They are Key to your health and wellness.


I'll show you a few of my favorite oils that I use on a daily basis to keep me and my family healthy, boost our immune system and to help with what ails us. 


1. Lavender 

It can help reduce stress, help with better sleeping habits and bring calmness into your world. Promotes skin health and a great oil to promote hair growth.  Got too close to the stove? Grab the lavender. A nice perk about lavender … it smells lovely!


2. Lemon

Lemon has antiviral and antihistamines properties. It's a natural antibacterial making it a great natural cleaner. The perfect oil to make a natural cleaner and gives off a lovely scent. A great oil to keep around for insect bites or wounds. Have a sticky label? Use a drop of lemon oil. 

And … Beware when using lemon oil in the sun, it may cause senstivy to the skin.


3. Peppermint  

Apply a few drops of peppermint on your stomach to alleviate that yucky feeling in your belly, an upset stomach or stomach cramps. Apply on chest to relive that annoying  hacking going on in your chest.

Need to focus or feel like you can’t concentrate? Grap your bottle of peppermint  and sniff away. Its a great bottle to have at work or while driving to stay focued. The oil to reach for when you have head or neck tension.


4. Clove

This oil is one I rely on heavily when I have any sort of discomfort. Can’t get to the dentist? Go for the clove oil! Its a great numbing agent. Clove is the oil to grab for insect bites, fungus infections, atheletes foot and bruises.

 Do you have ear discomfort? Put a drop on a cottton ball along with a hint of a carrier oil and tuck right inside the ear. Careful to never put oils directly in the ear canal. Disfuse to repel moquitoes.

Can Stress Add On Pounds?


For me… Yes! Why is it every time I walk onto the kitchen the refrigerator is staring me in the face? Seriously, it seems to literally call my name and says… come! Come eat something!


The bad part is what I actually reach for. You would think I would reach for an apple! Besides… "an apple a day keeps the Dr away" But no… instead I reach for a muffin or a Big piece of chocolate.


So, is it stress? Is this whole Covid 19 Virus to blame? Maybe. Because in the last two month I have packed on a few pounds!! UGG! I hate when that happens! Am I an emotional eater? I think I am.



So What kind of stress causes someone to eat because of their emotions?


Anything from losing your job, to financial worries to having to social distance, not being able to see the kids and grandkids etc. Any of these can be the root cause of feeling the need to reach for a bag of potatoes chips or eat that chocolate bar staring you in the face. It’s called emotional eating.


While it effects both sexes, emotional eating is more common among women then in men. 


But why food?


 Negative emotions can lead to a feeling of emptiness or an emotional void. Food is believed to be a way to fill that void and create a false feeling of fullness or temporary happiness.


Stress can make you eat more “Mindlessly’ as anxious thoughts race through your head. Emotional eating is when we’re not even focusing on the taste of the food, or how much we’ve eaten or even when we feel full. We just keep eating more yet feel less satisfied.


The difference...

Physical hunger

Emotional hunger

It develops slowly over time.

It comes about suddenly or abruptly.

You desire a variety of food groups.

You crave only certain foods.

You feel the sensation of fullness and take it as a cue to stop eating.

You may binge on food and not feel a sensation of fullness.

You have no negative feelings about eating.

You feel guilt or shame about eating.

We need to find other ways to deal with stress.


Maybe read a good book or how about journaling, or meditating? I find having my quiet time each morning before I start my day and reading my bible quiets my soul and slows down the anxious thoughts in my mind. 

I also find It’s helpful to take a walk especially on stressful days or when I feel really overwhelmed and emotionally fatigued. When I feel really stressed I feel angry. Anyone relate? 


That is when I walk over to my oil counter and reach for the Stress Away Oil and slather it on me. A drop or two on the back of my neck or my wrist is really all I need but in the heat of the moment… I want to pour the entire bottle on me. LOL


When I feel super hungry between meals or... I feel the need to eat... hungry or not, I need to make a decision. Do I head for the refrigerator or.... do I reach for oils?

I find adding a drop or two of grapefruit oil or peppermint oil in a glass of water takes away my cravings and Lemon oil improves my mood and focus.

Meet Verna Smoker

 

The moment we heard the doctor say…


“ITS A BOY”


My husband and I were over the top excited with the birth of our second child.


Those words were music to our ears, UNTIL the music was drowned out by, “Your baby boy has a birth defect, your son is born with spina bifida”. The next few days were a blur of emotions. I was scared, really scared.


I was 22 years old. We were young parents. This was not suppose to happen!


We were told that our baby would need a shunt placed in the ventricles of his brain to relieve the pressure of the spinal fluid on his brain, better known as, hydrocephalus. This was all so foreign and terrifying. Surgery after surgery became our baby’s life.


FEAR, SADNESS, ANGER, DISAPPOINTMENT, GUILT and BLAME on MYSELF became part of my world. Would our baby boy have brain damage? Would he walk? Let alone…live?

Surgeries and long hospital stays all took a toll on my emotional well being.


Instead of being raw and vulnerable with my feelings, I buried them. I was “Super Mom” (or at least that’s what I thought). I learned to wear a mask and I was good at it. I looked the part and I acted the part because I was “Super Mom”. 


However, I pushed my feelings down DEEPI pretended they were not there. This way I DID NOT NEED TO FEEL so deeply. It took awhile to notice, years to be exact, but I was slowly losing control of my emotions. My stress was going through the roof. Panic attacks and depression became real in my life.


Years passed.... 


At the age of 23, our son developed a brain infection which caused him to have colonic status seizures (you know, the kind that do not stop except through medicinal interventions). TERRIFYING to watch!

To top it all off, my husband survived a heart attack (thankfully he is doing well), my mom died of breast cancer, and a few years later my dad died of bladder cancer.


All of this added even MORE STRESS and WORRY.


By Gods grace, and because of our deep faith in HIM, we have and continue to weather the storms. 


Because of the RESEARCH I've done, today, WE DO LIFE differently. We’ve discovered ways to implement and make changes that support our IMMUNE SYSTEMS as well as our EMOTIONAL and BRAIN health. We’ve made changes in the amount of TOXINS that we surround ourselves with. We have become more aware of how “toxic exposure” has an affect on the internal structure of our brain and can trigger both short and long term effects. 


I’ve also found ways to manage my stress level. Those terrifying panic attacks no longer torment me. We have  found the tools we need to live our BEST LIFE, and for that, I am grateful. 


It's our life, and though there are parts of it that we continue to look for solutions in, we will continue to move forward. 


LIFE IS A JOURNEY, and it is BEAUTIFUL.
