There’s just something about that first stretch of warm Wisconsin weather that changes everything.
The windows get opened. The grill comes out. The flowers get planted. The fishing gear magically reappears. The dogs refuse to come out of the pond. And suddenly everyone wants to spend every possible minute outside again.
Summer tends to become a mix of kayaking, fishing, bonfires, gardening, projects that somehow multiply, and trying to soak up every nice day we can get before winter decides to make its dramatic return.
But over the years, I’ve also learned something important…
I feel so much better when I transition into summer intentionally instead of running myself into exhaustion trying to “do all the things.”
And honestly? Summer wellness does NOT need to be complicated.
Some of the best things we do for our health are the small, consistent habits that naturally fit into our routines.
Hydration… But Make It Enjoyable
Every summer I tell myself I’m going to stay ahead of hydration instead of waiting until I feel completely wiped out from the heat… and every summer I realize I need to make it fun, or I simply won’t drink enough water.
Hydration makes a huge difference in my energy, headaches, recovery, and even how I feel after being outside all day.
But plain water gets boring fast.
A few things that help me:
- keeping a water bottle nearby
- adding lemon, lime, cucumber, berries, or mint
- drinking water before coffee
- using electrolytes when I’m sweating more
- keeping cold water ready to grab in the fridge
One of my favorite combinations is adding Lavender/Lemonade and Grapefruit/Bergamot Vitality drops to my water. It tastes fresh, summery, and makes hydration feel way less like a chore while also adding electrolytes
A simple habit that helps me tremendously is hydrating BEFORE I feel thirsty. Once I’m already feeling drained from the heat, I know I waited too long.
Small habit. Big difference.
Outdoor Movement Counts Too
One thing I’ve really worked on over the years is changing my mindset around movement.
Not everything has to be an intense workout to “count.”
Summer naturally gives us more opportunities to move:
- gardening
- kayaking
- fishing
- early morning or evening walks
- planting flowers
- swimming
- yard work
- stretching or yoga outside
Honestly, some of my favorite summer movement comes from simply being outside more.
Fresh air helps my mood tremendously. Sunshine helps reset my brain after being indoors all winter. And movement feels so much easier when it’s attached to something enjoyable instead of feeling like punishment.
The older I get, the more I appreciate movement that supports my body instead of fighting against it.
Mosquitoes Love Me…
Can we all agree mosquitoes have favorite people?
Because apparently, I am one of them.
If there’s one mosquito within a five-mile radius, it WILL find me.
Over the years I’ve slowly switched away from heavily scented chemical laden bug sprays and started making simpler options instead using oils like citronella, lemongrass, peppermint, lavender, and eucalyptus.
Does it make me completely invisible to mosquitoes?
Absolutely not. 😂
Absolutely not. 😂
But it definitely helps while avoiding the heavy chemical smell that used to give me headaches.

Simple Summer Wellness Swaps
Summer wellness doesn’t need to involve complicated meal plans or extreme routines.
Sometimes it’s simply:
- grilling more protein and vegetables
- keeping easy fresh snacks available
- spending more time outside
- simplifying meals
- slowing down enough to actually enjoy the season
I’ve learned consistency matters far more than perfection.
Tiny habits repeated over time truly do add up.
My Favorite Summer Cooling Trick
One of my favorite summer wellness hacks is keeping a cooling spray in the refrigerator or cooler.
Trust me on this one.
After being outside gardening, kayaking, fishing, sitting around bonfires, or just melting in Wisconsin humidity, that cold refreshing spray feels AMAZING.
I like using aloe vera, distilled water, lavender, and peppermint for a simple cooling spray.
Keeping it cold makes it even better.
It’s one of those little things that feels surprisingly luxurious on a hot day.
Summer Diffuser Blends = Instant Mood Boost
Diffusing changes with the seasons around here.
In winter I tend to gravitate toward cozy blends, but summer calls for fresh, clean, energizing scents.
A few favorite summer blends:
Fresh Cabin Blend
- Lemon
- Lime
- Peppermint
Porch Sitting Blend
- Lavender
- Northern Lights Black Spruce
- Citrus Fresh
It’s amazing how certain scents can instantly make a space feel lighter, fresher, and happier.
Wellness Doesn’t Have to Be Perfect
The older I get, the more I realize wellness isn’t built in huge dramatic moments. It’s created in the small things we do consistently every day.
“One small change at a time.”
What’s your favorite sign that summer is finally here?
Repeat these positive affirmations to yourself...
* I am resilient and can overcome life's challenges.
* I am strong and have the power to make the right choices for me.
* I am grateful for what I can do.
