I wake up drenched in sweat, throw all the blankets onto my husband because I NEED them off of me NOW, crank the fan up on high, while Rob wakes up smothered in blankets to a windstorm. Meanwhile, I’m stomping to the bathroom to change, muttering, “It must be NICE to sleep.”
I’m a crazy lady, he’s confused—because really, how can you get in trouble for sleeping? Welcome to perimenopause.
Wait, What Is Perimenopause Anyway?
Perimenopause is the season before menopause officially arrives. It can last months… or (brace yourself) years. And while people often talk about menopause as the “end,” the truth is this stage is a transition—a sometimes wild, unpredictable, but very real part of life.
Your hormones are shifting, your body is recalibrating, and you’re learning a whole new rhythm. It’s not broken, it’s not failing—it’s just changing.
Symptoms No One Warns You About
Sure, you’ve heard of hot flashes. But perimenopause is sneakier than that:
- Mood swings that make you feel like you’ve switched personalities in a single day
- Sleep struggles (insomnia or waking up at 2 AM like it’s party time)
- Weight shifts that don’t seem to care how hard you’re working
- Hot flashes and night sweats—because clearly, 2 AM is the perfect time for your body to test its internal furnace
And then there are the unspoken “extras”—like the thermostat wars. In my house, Rob is bundled up like it’s the Arctic while I’m flinging open windows in January. Or the “fashion challenge” of wondering if your outfit will survive without sweat stains before lunch.
You’re Not Losing It—You’re Evolving
Here’s what I’ve realized: perimenopause doesn’t mean we’re falling apart. It means our bodies are calling us to pay attention. This is a season to notice what actually supports us—and to unapologetically say yes to those things and no to what drains us.
It might mean:
- Prioritizing sleep even if it means skipping late-night scrolling
- Finding foods that fuel you (not just feed cravings)
- Moving your body in ways that feel good, not punishing
- Building in stress relief because your nervous system is already riding a rollercoaster
This isn’t about giving up—it’s about leveling up.
Taking Charge of the Transition
I don’t have it all figured out (trust me, Rob would confirm that during my 3 AM fan adjustments), but I’ve learned that small, intentional changes make a huge difference.
That’s why I love creating spaces where we can talk about these real, messy, laugh-so-you-don’t-cry parts of life—and actually find solutions that work.
If this resonates with you, I’d love to connect. You can schedule a 1:1 call with me, or join my next virtual class on October 11th where we’ll touch on this topic (and more ways to support your body and mind through life’s shifts).
Final Thought
Perimenopause isn’t “the beginning of the end.” It’s the start of a new chapter—one where you get to call the shots, fan on high and all. And if you ever feel like a crazy lady in the night… just know, you’re not alone.
