I used to think consistency meant doing the thing every single day.
Drink the water. Take the supplements. Move my body. Write the blog. Keep up with the routine. Check the boxes.
And if I missed a few days—or a whole week—it was really easy to feel like I had somehow fallen off the wagon.
But lately I’ve been wondering…
What if consistency doesn’t actually mean doing something every single day?
The last couple of weeks have definitely not looked like my normal routine.
We welcomed a new grandson into our family. ❤️ I’ve gotten lots of grandma time, and I’ve soaked up every bit of it. There have been snuggles, playing on the floor, disrupted schedules, tired days and plenty of moments when the things I normally do simply didn’t happen.
And you know what? I wouldn’t trade those days for a perfectly checked-off to-do list.
I will always choose Grandma time over my to-do list! ☺️
But now, as life starts settling into a slightly more normal rhythm, I’ve noticed that familiar little voice trying to creep in.
You need to get back on track.
You’ve gotten behind.
You failed.
You were doing so good before…
Maybe you know that voice too. The one that can turn a few missed days into a whole story about how you’ve somehow failed.
It can happen with exercise, drinking enough water, eating the way that makes us feel good, taking our supplements, going to bed on time, journaling or prayer. Whatever those little things are that help us feel like ourselves.
We miss a few days and suddenly it feels like we’ve undone all the progress we made. Except…we haven’t.
Starting Again Isn’t Starting Over
That’s something I’m learning more and more.
Consistency doesn’t have to mean never missing a day.
Sometimes it simply means coming back. Coming back to the glass of water, the walk, the foods that make your body feel good. Coming back to that quiet moment when you stop and ask, what do I need today?
And maybe that’s part of it too. What my body needs today might not be what it needed two weeks ago. I’m learning that I have to leave a little room for that.
That’s really what listening to our bodies is about.
Pause. Listen. Nourish. Reflect. Repeat.
Notice that last word isn’t perfect. It’s repeat.
We keep coming back. Life is going to interrupt our routines. Babies are going to be born. Vacations will happen. Holidays will come. Our bodies will have harder days. Families will need us. And sometimes we’re simply going to be tired.
That’s not failure. That’s life.
So I’m not trying to “catch up” from the last couple of weeks. I’m simply asking myself what feels good to come back to now.
More water? Yep.
A little more intentional movement? Definitely.
Getting back to some of the routines that help me feel my best? Absolutely.
But I’m doing it without trying to make up for the days I didn’t.
Those days weren’t wasted.
They were filled with something pretty wonderful. ❤️
I think that’s what I want consistency to look like for me. Not doing everything perfectly but noticing when I’ve gotten away from the things that help me feel good—and coming back to them without beating myself up about it. Again, and again.
So, if you’ve gotten away from something that you know makes you feel good, here’s your reminder:
You don’t have to start over. You can simply start again.
Maybe today is a good day to ask yourself: What’s one thing that would feel good to come back to?
Thanks for spending a little time with me today.
Wellness doesn’t have to be about fixing yourself. It can start with learning to listen, getting curious, and discovering what support looks like for you.
