On airplanes, they tell us to first put on our own oxygen mask before we put the mask on others. Reason is, we need to take in oxygen and breathe, otherwise we won’t be able to help others.
I translate this posture into self-care. Which is not selfish but vital for us spiritually, emotionally and physically. You must be taking care of yourself and get filled up so you can serve / work from a full tank.
I bet that felt like another to-do on your long task list. IKR? You want to remove things from your list, not add to it!
That is how I felt when I quit my job in the Fall of 2014 to become a caretaker for my mom. People were saying - “take care of you” / “ take care of you” / “take care of you.” I knew they were giving this advice in love and kindness.
What my anxiety-riddled self with a shrinking band-width for flexibility heard was .. “one more thing to do” / “one more thing to do” / “one more thing to do.” And self-care did not happen.
After my mom passed away, I pondered these conversations with dear friends. What I realized is, self-care ideas would have felt incredible.
You may be in the trenches right now .. taking care of an aging parent, all-of-a-sudden having your children do school remotely, struggling with work issues, healing from a breakup or injury or illness. And This List Goes On.
Which Can Be So Overwhelming. And yet, as your thoughts and emotions are linked, affecting behaviors and producing results, taking care of you is life-giving.
And perhaps even life-changing.
