The Swipe File System: How to Plan Better Content (Without Starting From Scratch)

If you’ve ever sat down to write a post, send an email, or even share your story about Young Living—and felt completely stuck—you are not alone. Showing up consistently online can feel overwhelming, especially when you’re busy or not sure what to say. That’s where a swipe file comes in.

A swipe file is a simple, organized system that stores your best ideas, stories, tips, and calls to action so you can reuse and repurpose them whenever you need to create content. It’s the secret weapon that helps Brand Partners like you plan a month of posts in minutes—without having to start from scratch each time.

This week in our Weekly Work Session, we shared how to create and use a swipe file that actually works—whether you’re brand new or ready to streamline your business.

Why a Swipe File Is a Game-Changer

If you’ve ever said, “I don’t know what to post,” “I don’t have time to create content,” or “I’m not good at writing,” this system was made for you. Most people think they need to come up with new, original content every time they want to share something—but that’s not how smart businesses do it.

The most successful content creators aren’t more creative. They’re more organized. They capture great ideas and reuse what works. That’s what a swipe file helps you do.

  • Save time by reusing high-performing content
  • Reduce burnout by eliminating the blank page struggle
  • Stay consistent and visible without constant brainstorming
  • Lead with service and education—not pressure or hype

When you know what to say, showing up feels easier. And when it’s easier, you’re more likely to do it regularly—which builds trust, credibility, and growth over time.

What to Include in Your Swipe File

Your swipe file should include any content you might want to reuse, remix, or reference later. It’s not just about what sounds good—it’s about what connects, educates, or inspires your audience.

Here are the five main types of content we recommend collecting:

  • Personal stories: Share how Young Living products or the business have made a difference in your life.
  • Testimonials: Gather real feedback from your customers or team to use in future posts or emails.
  • Educational tips: Save simple explanations of how products work, how to use them, or wellness routines.
  • Calls to action: Collect phrases that guide someone to take action (e.g., “Join the class,” “Message me,” “Try this today”).
  • Common questions or objections: These make great posts because they speak directly to what your audience is thinking.

You don’t need a huge database to start. Even 10–15 pieces of content can create dozens of posts. The goal is to capture what works, not create a perfect system from day one.

How to Create and Organize Your Swipe File

You can build your swipe file in whatever format works best for you—paper journal, Google Doc, spreadsheet, Trello board, or inside GetOiling itself.

In our training, we showed how to set it up in Trello, but the system is the same no matter where you store it. Here’s how to get started:

  1. Pick your categories: Use the list above (stories, testimonials, tips, etc.) as a starting point.
  2. Create sections or columns: One for each category. This makes it easy to add ideas and find them later.
  3. Add your existing content: Look through past posts, texts, emails, or even team messages. Anything you’ve written that could be useful again goes here.
  4. Build a habit: When you hear a great story, write something you're proud of, or get a question from someone—add it to the file.

Think of this as your “content pantry.” The more you add over time, the more you have to pull from when it’s time to publish.

Real Examples of What to Add

Here are some examples of content that belongs in your swipe file. As you read, think about what you’ve already said or shared that fits these formats:

  • A text where you helped someone pick their first diffuser blend
  • A photo and caption from your wellness routine
  • A testimonial from a team member about how oils helped with sleep
  • A tip from a recent class that people loved
  • An answer you give all the time when someone asks “Where do I start?”

Don’t worry about writing it perfectly. Your swipe file is for storing, not publishing. You can always polish content when you go to post it. The key is to capture it before it gets lost in your scroll.
