Stop Rushing Through Your Life

Stop Rushing Through Your Life

“Hurry up!” “Let’s GO!” “We’re going to be late.”

How often do you say those words—to your kids, your spouse, or even yourself? Does this sound like your Sunday morning routine? I get it, friend.

We hurry through mornings to get to work or school. We rush through meals to get to the next activity. We count down the days until vacation, the weekend, or the next season.

I can’t wait until my baby sleeps through the night.
I can’t wait until they’re out of their teenage years.
I can’t wait until I get married...

Or maybe we’re simply waiting for the moment when life will finally slow down.

And then we wonder, Where did the time go?
I’ve been learning an important lesson through homeschooling. For years, I would look at the lesson plans, assignments, and boxes that needed to be checked and feel pressure to keep everyone moving.
But over the last year, I’ve been learning what it means to homeschool from rest.

We still have goals, schedules, and responsibilities. We have assignments to finish, books to complete, and tests to take. But for me, homeschooling from rest means learning that finishing the lesson that day isn’t always more important than experiencing the moment.

The meaningful part of our homeschool day isn’t always the assignment at all. It’s the conversation that happens while we’re working. It’s the “aha” moment that happens while we’re eating breakfast in bed watching Wild Kratts. It’s snuggling next to my 13-year-old while we figure out science questions. It’s working through vocabulary and writing assignments with my 16-year-old. And it’s the opportunity to stop and pray together.

And that lesson, for me, reaches far beyond homeschooling.

How much of our lives are we rushing through because we’re trying to get to whatever comes next?

You don’t have to wait for life to slow down before you can slow yourself down enough to experience it.

JOY-FUELED COACHING TIP

Choose one thing today that you normally rush through.
A meal. Your morning coffee or tea. Driving somewhere. Tucking your child into bed. Talking with your spouse.

Pause. Breathe. Give yourself permission to be fully there.

SCRIPTURE TO HOLD FOR JOY

“Be still, and know that I am God!”
—Psalm 46:10 (NLT)
