The Day I Prepared the Way...From My Bed

Have you ever had plans you were excited about—only to have your body say not today?

Recently I had a setback and my physical therapist put me back on two crutches with strict rest so I could be ready for my upcoming procedure. Mandatory rest. Not exactly what I had in mind.
But something beautiful happened in the middle of it.

My bedroom became the preparation space for the day. My kids were getting ready for their Young Musicians of Minnesota piano performance, and while I couldn’t attend, I still got to be part of the moments leading up to it.

My son found his new favorite cologne and asked me to style his hair. My daughter wanted help with her nails and makeup before the performance. And my high schooler-- he stopped in for hugs.

There were snuggles, conversations, laughter, and a few tender moments when we all wished I could be there that night. And while I couldn’t sit in the audience, my husband FaceTimed me so I could listen to them perform live. It wasn’t the day I expected—but it was still full of joy.

Sometimes preparing the way doesn’t look like doing more. Sometimes it looks like slowing down and being present with what God has placed right in front of you.

One Joy Tip

When your plans shift, ask yourself:
“How can I still be present in this moment?”
You may not be able to do everything you hoped, but there is almost always a small way to stay connected to what matters most.
