You Don't Have to Say Yes
You Don't Have to Say Yes
“I’d love to help!”
How many times have you said yes before you stopped to consider whether you actually had the capacity to do it? I'm no stranger to this, friend.
Maybe someone needs a volunteer. A friend asks for a favor. Your kids need one more thing. Your church needs someone to fill in last minute. A dinner date. There’s another event you could attend, another person you could help, another opportunity that sounds really good.
And none of those things are necessarily bad. But every good thing isn’t necessarily your thing.
My sister recently sent me the book Boundaries: When to Say Yes, How to Say No to Take Control of Your Life. I realized that some of the challenges I faced as a homeschool mom, wife, and life coach working from home could be helped by establishing healthy boundaries. One I found especially helpful was setting clear boundaries around my work time and saying “no” to distractions.
And with my MCAS + orthopedic healing journey, I’ve had to put even stricter boundaries around my capacity. Saying “NO” to good things has been extremely difficult. Yeah, I’ve shed some tears. I stepped down from leading an in-person Bible study and shifted to doing Bible studies and devotions on the YouVersion Bible App with a group of women (contact me to join our next study). I shifted my coaching sessions to virtual and cut down my work, homeschool, and family time. I said no to going out with friends, traveling, kids' sports events, and even much of my role as a homemaker.
There are still so many things I want to do, people I want to help, and places I want to show up. But in this season, I simply can’t say yes to everything I would have said yes to before. And honestly, that’s hard.
But saying no—or not right now—doesn’t mean I don’t care. For me it means I’m making room to faithfully tend to what God has already placed in front of me. My healing is my priority.
I like to say, “No for now, not forever.” Because there are lots of yeses ahead.
JOY-FUELED COACHING TIP
Before automatically saying yes, give yourself permission to pause.
Ask: Do I have the capacity for this in the season I’m in right now?
Not the capacity you wish you had. Not the capacity you used to have. The capacity you have today.
A thoughtful no can protect your yes for the people, priorities, and purpose that matter most.
SCRIPTURE TO HOLD FOR JOY
“Guard your heart above all else, for it determines the course of your life.”

JOY FOR THE JOURNEY
You don’t have to say yes to every good thing. Leave room for the things God is asking you to tend in this season.
