Your Kids Won't Remember Perfect

Your Kids Won’t Remember Perfect

One of my favorite summer traditions when my kids were younger was sitting outside at our picnic table with a simple sheet of notebook paper and making a summer bucket list.

Nothing fancy.

I let each child (all six kiddos) choose one thing they wanted to do that summer. Some ideas were bigger—like a trip to the waterpark or the beach, which was a lot on weekdays without my hubby's help.

But many were wonderfully simple:
Movie marathons.
Playing in the hose.
Making cookies together.
Popsicles on the deck.
Trips to the park.

Last night we were talking about our summer bucket list days, and looking back, I realized something...We often think we need big experiences to create meaningful memories. Big vacations. Big plans.
Big moments.

But some of the things my kids remember most weren't grand at all.
They were simple.
A laugh around the table.
Staying up late.
Cooking together.
A spontaneous ice cream stop.

Friend, I need this reminder too.
Because if I’m not careful, pressure and comparison start whispering:
Do more. Plan more. Make it more special. And this unpredictable healing season I’ve been walking through—59+ months and counting—does not respond well to pressure.

So here’s what I’ve learned...
Joy isn’t about perfection. It’s about presence. Presence leaves a bigger impact than perfection. Because people rarely remember perfectly planned days. They remember how they felt.

JOY-FUELED COACHING TIP

Grab a sheet of notebook paper—not your phone notes. Stay present.

  1. Let each family member choose one thing for summer.
  2. Add three simple joys.
Think:
  • backyard picnic
  • movie night
  • grilling together
  • library trip
  • popsicles outside
  1. Circle one thing to do this week.
Remember...
Simple joys often become lasting memories.
