My Candida Experience
From the last post, you know I am following my functional doctors' advice over my gastroenterologist's suggestion and am following a paleo diet and live as I have Celiac Disease.

When I first met with my doctor and told her all about how I was feeling, she ran many labs tests to verify what she thought might be going on inside me.  I received all these boxes and envelopes pictured, I created a spreadsheet of what tests to do on what days according to their protocols.  I felt like I was sending off everything that came out of my body, blood, urine, saliva, and feces.

I've shared some of the changes I have made from the results of these non-traditional tests.  Now it was time to address another problem since a test showed results of intestinal microbial overgrowth which meant my yeast bacteria was high.   I chose to address my fatigue first by radically changing my diet and supplementing my deficiencies to bring back a gut balance. I knew I wouldn’t be able to learn how to eat a paleo diet with extra food sensitivity restrictions and follow the anti-candida diet and take the candida fighting supplements too.  It would be retraining myself to do better in too many areas at once. I knew my limit, and I was right!
Lab Tests
While eating paleo, I can have fruits and natural sweeteners, but to get rid of the excess candida I needed to stop eating all high fructose fruits and natural sweeteners like maple syrup and honey.  Those types of fruits and non-sugar sweeteners played a key role in helping me get off of my poor diet and stay on the stricter one.

To kill the excess yeast, I also had to increase cruciferous foods, coconut oil, and focus on anti-candida foods.  I knew it would be challenging. So, I mentally and emotionally prepared myself.  I had been eating paleo for 5 solid months and feeling great about it and the way my body felt.  So, I got the supplements my doctor recommended, and I stopped eating food that fueled the fungus.  Candida is also known as yeast or fungus.  I followed an anti-candida protocol religiously for two weeks.  I didn’t enjoy it, but I knew I needed to work on this part of my gut healing.

Without testing again, I don’t know if it made a dent in healing my intestines from the fungus overgrowth.   I watched for kill-off symptoms and didn’t feel well a couple of days on the protocol but not sure it was that.  I may still have candida, but I’m sure it’s less after starving it of sugar for two weeks.

Along with eating a restricted paleo diet, I miss paleo-friendly foods like blueberries and eggs, due to tested sensitivities.   I must say, breakfasts are more challenging without eggs! Luckily, I am creative and tenacious to work around these limitations.

And I was continuing to develop my exercise routine.  I rode my stationary bike three times a week increasing to 20 minutes at a time, when I first started I could barely do 10 minutes.  I have kept the cycling habit and can say I exercise regularly.  That is a big change for me, and I smile when I think about it. It feels good to be where I am now and accomplishing things for myself.  I have focused on doing for others to the detriment of my own health.
Things were going great until I decided to make gluten-free brownies, oh the monthly cravings!  I intended to have one serving and kept going back for more.   Shoot!  In a matter of minutes, I was hooked on sugar.  When doctors say sugar lights up the brain as cocaine does, I believe it!

Even my weekly iTOVI scanner recognized my body chemistry had changed.  My emotional and physical pie chart was showing lots of blue lines, which meant I was far from balanced!  It’s interesting how we fib to ourselves and think we can cheat just a little.  In case you didn’t know, gluten-free products have increased sugars in them to make them taste better.
That’s not an option for me since I take medication for insulin resistance.  Too much sugar makes me sleepy and there are strong cravings every 24 hours for the next fix!  Thankfully, I understand that it takes 3 days to starve myself of processed sugar to get back on track.

Why does doing the right thing for our health have to be so trying?

Next, I will share some of the supplements I take.  I will say this, I’ve got to increase my water intake.  When you take fistfuls of capsules and tablets that your body must break down to use, it’s important to drink enough water.  It keeps things moving if you know what I mean!
