Cypress Essential Oil Spotlight - May 2023

Cypress Essential Oil Spotlight

Cypress is one of our favorite conifer oils - deep, woodsy and full of incredible health benefits! Whether you are looking for healthy skin and hair, support for your heart and circulatory system, a companion for yoga and meditation or a deep breath of fresh air, this crisp woodsy oil is what you need.

Just a Drop of Cypress

  • Has a clean, evergreen aroma
  • Supports healthy circulation and heart health
  • May help to reduce the appearance of blemishes when applied topically
  • Promotes the appearance of healthy-looking hair and skin
  • Is a great companion for dry brushing and lymphatic health
  • Creates a grounding atmosphere when diffused
We love the tree oils and Cypress is no exception! It's in some of our favorite blends like R.C. and Aroma Siez to name a few, and an ingredient in our beloved Raindrop roller! (more on that below) It's calming and grounding and wonderful on the skin.

Background

Cypress has a long history of use as a construction material due to the durability of its wood, and it was used by the Phoenicians and Cretans to build ships and bows and by the Egyptians to build sarcophagi. Its botanical name, Cupressus sempervirens, is derived from the Greek “sempervivum,” or “live forever. The oil is steam distilled from the branches of the plant to produce an incredible essential oil!

Emotional Support with Cypress

Cypress is calming and grounding and wonderful for releasing stored emotions. It helps ease feelings of loss and creates a sense of security. It helps to heal emotional trauma, calms the body, relieves anger and just helps life flow better. This is a great oil to diffuse for any kiddos having trouble with transitions, new schools, big changes. It is helpful when dealing with emotional trauma and anger.

Cypress also helps with these seasonal feelings. Diffuse or wear as perfume for the following:
  • Grief and loss
  • Insecurity in relationships
  • Worry
Cypress also helps the body detox naturally and promotes production of leukocytes (white blood cells) which boosts the body's natural defenses during wintertime. Emotional health is directly affected by how we feel physically and Cypress helps with that.

  • Rub on wrists and feet to keep up energy
  • Take a detox bath with cypress and Epsom salts
  • Take Cypress to a massage with you and you will benefit from even more soothing of your muscles and it will help with the detoxing too.
Lymphathic health and Cypress

Your lymphatic system is a crucial part of your health, yet an often overlooked one! The lymphatic system is part of the immune system. It works to protect your body from illness, to maintain body fluid levels, to absorb digestive fats and remove cellular waste.

The lymphatic system works hard to filter out all the things the body experiences. And there are some really simple, really easy health habits you can start today to give this system a boost on the daily! Exercise, hydration, dry brushing, Cel-Lite Magic Massage Oil and Cypress can be huge benefits for lymphatic health and circulation in general! Use Cypress alone or with Cel-Lite Magic daily for a gentle massage on the arms and legs.

Dry Brushing with Cel-Lite Magic

Dry brushing in conjunction with using Cel-Lite Magic Massage Oil is a wonderful health habit! We love to add a bottle of Cypress directly to the bottle of Cel-Lite Magic for more lymph stimulation.

Dry brushing sweeps away dead skin cells, stimulates the hormones and oil-producing glands in the skin, increases circulation and assists the body in the removal of toxins.  There's something that feels so good about dry brushing in every season but especially in summer!

It's best to incorporate dry brushing into your daily routine either before or after your shower.  You can choose morning or evening depending on what works best for you but what matters most is when and how to apply your lotions and oils. Shower before skin-brushing if you're using Cel-Lite Magic Massage Oil on the brush.  You can also shower after dry brushing and then apply the massage oil.

Choose a medium soft brush and be gentle on your skin.  Your skin shouldn't scratch or be damaged in any way. Use firm, small strokes upward, or work in a circular motion. Start at your feet and brush upward toward the heart. Similarly, when you start on your arms, begin at the hands and work upward. For the stomach, work in a clockwise direction using very gentle strokes. Avoid the chest and very sensitive areas.

Step 2 - Using a stand mixer or hand mixer, whip product for about 2–3 minutes or until it looks like foam and forms peaks. Store in a glass jar at room temperature.
Tips: To keep your razor from clogging, rinse it under warm or hot water after 2–3 strokes for a clean shave. Run water above 76 degrees for 30 - 60 seconds so your drain doesn't clog.

Lavender Essential Oil
from Courtney Critz

Lavender makes me think of a wonderful grandmother. Soft and huggable, gentle, smells like flowers, calming, and the one you want around if you are sad, tired, or need comforting. She has experience and wisdom and seems to be able to fix every problem. She is soft-spoken and makes you feel more rested the moment she's around. And she seems to have that perfect knack with any baby.

For centuries lavender has been used for sleep. It has been put into pillows and mattresses, wrapped up with clothes, added to handkerchiefs (hello, diffuser) and used in aromatherapy for relaxation. It has been added to all kinds of tonics and potions for skin and smelling salts for fragile ladies whose corsets were tied a little too tight.

Unfortunately, over the years, many "lavender" scented items became filled with synthetics and fillers which actually irritated our airways and lost all of their benefits. People even started giving lavender a bad reputation as being unsafe because of all the synthetic, chemical-laden products that had been used bearing its name. There is more lavender oil sold than grown in the world which doesn't really add up right.

But, hooray!, Young Living began growing and distilling its own lavender to ensure a high quality oil, making sure that we had the real thing again. I've planted and harvested it myself in Idaho and Utah! I mean, who wants a fake grandmother? Little Red Riding Hood can tell you that is NOT a good plan.

Today we use our Young Living Lavender Oil in many similar ways. In our lotions, bath products, sleep roll-ons, diffusers, and on our precious babies. It is a gentle oil with a calming effect on everything from our respiratory systems, to our skin, to our emotions. So when you have a problem and you want something to be comforted, whether it's your irritated nose, your foot, or your baby, remember The Grandmother of all oils and give her a try.

Background

Did you know that lavender is part of the mint family and is one of Young Living's most popular oils? Young Living has three farms that grow lavender, located in Utah, Idaho, and France - ooh la la!! Lavender is steam distilled from the flowering tops of the plant, and it takes 27 square feet of lavender plants to make one 15 ml bottle of Lavender essential oil. In ancient Greece, Pedanius Dioscorides, a physician pharmacologist and botanist, praised the many qualities and uses of lavender. You can find Lavender essential oil in many Young Living blends, including Stress AwayTranquil Roll-OnRutaVaLa Roll-OnForgiveness, and Harmony

Key Constituents
*Constituents are naturally occurring compounds in plants (and therefore essential oils) that give them specific health-supporting properties

  • Linalyl acetate - has high quality antioxidant properties and has been shown to support the cardiovascular system as well as the body's response to ischemic injury.
  • Linalool - has been shown to support the body's response to pain inflammation, may help improve sleep, and is considered to support the immune and central nervous systems
Lavender & Emotions

Lavender is great for the many common fears we are tempted to give into:
  • Fear of Abandonment, being left alone.
By rubbing lavender over the abdomen and using the mantra "I embrace all life's experiences" can help us be open to self-reliance and our contentment to all things. The opposite of abandonment is not being fully self-reliant, but being connected to everything working together for our good.
  • Fear of Criticism.
This one is huge, especially if you are in a line of work where you put yourself out there often (or if you have a high-maintenance toddler too!). Using Lavender as perfume while pairing it with mantras and unconditional love for ourselves can be a great practice for developing self confidence!
  • Fear of New Things, fear of moving forward.
Sometimes there are big transitions in life and sometimes it seems scary to open ourselves up to change. Lavender has a beautiful way of calming the central nervous system to help us be more open to change and gaining positive momentum.

*Note: Lavender and Lavender Vitality are the same essential oil. Lavender  Vitality is simply labeled differently for internal use.

Daily Habits with Lavender

Lavender is such a lovely, versatile oil that there are many ways we can use it on a daily basis - from skincare to relaxation to health to kids! You can even use Lavender Vitality in all of your cooking and baking recipes. (See the DIYs with Lavender blog post for more!)

Add Lavender to your relaxation routine…

  • Use Lavender as part of a bedtime routine by rubbing it on the bottoms of your feet and diffusing it next to your bed.
  • Help little ones calm down for bedtime with gentle Lavender massage. Mix 1 tbsp carrier oil with 5 drops Lavender and gently massage legs, arms and back.
  • Add 10 drops of Lavender to 1 cup of magnesium flakes or epsom salt to a bath to create a relaxing environment. We also love adding Peace & Calming or Frankincense to the mix!
Add Lavender to your wellness routine…
  • Reach for Lavender to release tension
  • Use Lavender to support the airways when air quality is less than ideal.
  • Add 5 drops each Lavender and Copaiba to 1 cup fine grain sea salt or organic salt and mineral solution and mix well. To use, dilute 1 tsp of mixture with 8-12 oz distilled water to make a DIY nasal rinse solution for use in a netipot
  • Use a drop of Lavender Vitality under the tongue or swiped on the inside of the cheek.
Head On Roller - 20 drops Peppermint, Copaiba, & Lavender, 10 drops Frankincense. Fill with V-6 carrier or carrier oil of choice and roll over temples, across the forehead, on the back of the neck and shoulders.

Seasons Change Roller Blend - 15 drops each Lavender, Lemon, Peppermint, Tea Tree, Copaiba, then fill with carrier. Roll over the chest, wrists, just below the nostrils. This also makes a great combination for an epsom salt bath or a diffuser blend!

Use Lavender to support skin needs...

  • Apply Lavender diluted with coconut oil to skin after touching something hot.
  • Add Lavender to your moisturizer for oily skin needs or apply it with a cotton ball to blemishes or the t-zone as needed.
  • Make a dry scalp mask with ¼ cup organic avocado oil, 10 drops each Lavender and Tea Tree essential oil. Apply to dry spots of scalp and let sit for 15 minutes before rinsing and washing as usual. Use once a week.
Make an “Owie” spray or cream (great for kiddos!). Apply to needed area frequently to support natural healing

  • 15 drops each Lavender, Frankincense, & Copaiba
  • Optional: 10 drops Tea Tree for purifying needs
  • Small glass jar or 2 oz glass spray bottle
Rub lavender and coconut oil on the skin after time in the sun or make an after-sun spray or balm!

Lavender's floral aroma is distinctive and unique, yet it mixes well with other fragrances too. Blend Lavender with other florals, and its clean, simple scent will shine. COMPANION PRODUCTS
Testimonies

There are SO many reasons to love Lavender, but don't just take it from us. Check out these community testimonies about this versatile oil!

  • “Lavender is one of my favorite oils. I diffuse it every night with Cedarwood to help calm my kids. A few of my favorite ways to use it is to apply it topically with a roller, add a drop or two to my mascara to help my lashes grow, add it to my baths with Epsom salts for relaxation and add it to my skin serum I make with my oils. I pretty much use it for everything!”
  • “Lavender was the oil that got me started with Young Living! I use it to support a restful night of sleep every night. It is a constant on my monthly order. I also love using 2-3 drops of lavender on wool dryer balls in a load of laundry.”
  • “I love to diffuse it when we homeschool and it just brings the whole house into a calming frame of mind.”
  • “Lavender is my 3 year old's favorite oil. When she gets an “owie” she always asks for it and a kiss. I love that it's that easy.”
  • “Lavender is a go to oil for so many things. An odd use has been rubbing this on the bridge of my nose. Why? A few years back my eyes began watering and always felt like they had tiny rocks in them. Eye drops helped but that meant the rest of my life. I discovered lavender in the bridge of my nose stops all the effects and my eye doctor was pleased.”
  • “I applied lavender on my sweet baby girl this morning as part of her wellness roller and currently it's going in our bedroom - my firefighter husband asked for it while he napped, regaining his rest from working through the flood down here. So grateful for the sweet gift that Lavender is to our family!”
  • “I love lavender! I used mine today in my seasonal roller along with lemon, peppermint, and copaiba.”

Golden Turmeric

Turmeric is no stranger to the health scene. YL's Golden Turmeric powder supports the body's natural response to inflammation, immune response, joint health, mobility, and recovery after physical exertion because of its incredible powerhouse ingredients.

Daily Habits with Golden Turmeric

  • Mix ½ teaspoon in 6–8 ounces of water, juice, or milk of choice once daily
  • Drink at nighttime as part of your wind-down routine
  • Combine with water, ice, 1 drop of Cardamom Vitality essential oil, and 2 ounces of NingXia Red for a delicious wellness drink
  • Add to a green smoothie (it's delicious with the Vanilla Spice Protein Powder)
  • Steep Spiced Turmeric Vitality Tea and add ½ teaspoon of Golden Turmeric for a cozy nighttime drink
Start your day with a Golden Milk Latte (full recipe is here)
  • ½ Tsp Golden Turmeric powder
  • 8 oz milk of choice
  • 1 drop Cardamom Vitality
  • 1 drop Nutmeg Vitality
  • Swish of Cinnamon Bark Vitality (insert a toothpick into the bottle, then swirl it around in the milk)
  • Dash of ground cinnamon for garnish
  • Option to froth some of the milk and essential oils in an electric frother for delicious foam!
Heat the milk on medium low, then stir in Golden Turmeric powder and add essential oils. Stir gently, then top with a sprinkle of cinnamon!
Make a Turmeric Clay Mask (adapted from Hello Glow):
  • 1/2 teaspoon Golden Turmeric Powder
  • 2 Tbsp flour of choice or ground oats
  • 3 Tbsp full fat yogurt or milk
  • A few drops of honey
  • 3 drops Manuka essential oil
  • 3 drops Frankincense essential oil
Mix flour, turmeric, honey and milk to make a paste. Add essential oils. Apply a thin layer to your face and let it dry for 10-15 minutes (see below for guidelines). Rinse and scrub gently to remove.
While the powerful antioxidants present in turmeric impart that vibrant yellow color, be aware that this same color can stick around a little too long.  A good rule of thumb to follow is the one minute rule — if you notice no discoloration after sixty seconds, leave on for another four minutes. Test again, and keep it on all the way until 10 or 15 minutes, which should be the max for most products and at-home solutions.

  • ½ cup uncooked rice
  • ¼ cup Epsom salt
  • 1 cup dried lavender buds

    • Step 5 - Let sit overnight to dry in a room temperature area. When dry, pop tablets out and store in a glass jar.
To Use - When needed, put a tablet in the toilet bowl, hard-to-clean bottles, or sink full of dishes to help clean and deodorize. Let sit in the bowl, bottle, or sink for 20–30 minutes to fizz and dissolve. Once dissolved, flush or rinse out.

  • Is a wonderful choice for combating oily skin
Background

Bergamot is cultivated primarily in southern Italy and has been used in the Middle East for hundreds of years as a flavoring, perfume, and addition to moisturizers and cosmetics. Cold pressed from the fresh bergamot fruit that gives Earl Grey tea its distinctive flavor, Bergamot Vitality essential oil has a fresh, complex citrus taste that makes it the perfect addition to many summer dishes.

  • Limonene
  • Linalyl Acetate
Bergamot & Beauty

When it comes to skincare, Bergamot can be a great choice! It helps combat oil production, acne & psoriasis. Add it to a roller to use on T-zone or problem areas or add to your daily moisturizer.

Bergamot is also a huge component for many perfumes due to its ability to balance the mix of aromas and harmonize all of the essences. Some of our favorite pairings are:
Bergamot & Emotions

Bergamot essential oil has been studied for its properties to lower cortisol (stress hormone) and to lower the body's sympathetic nervous response (fight/flight/freeze), making this a wonderful oil for emotional support!

Bergamot has a woodsy, sweet, citrus aroma that is so uplifting to our moods. Bergamot helps decrease stress and is a wonderfully calming oil! Bergamot is often referred to as the harmonizer, helping us level out and identify our emotions. Citrus oils in general are great for creating a calm, uplifting mood.

Read on for more about why we love this oil and ways to use it daily….

Lemon essential oil has many benefits similar to sunshine. It can help brighten our moods, help us find and focus on the good, helps clean and purify and is good for overall health and wellness! Lemon is one of the most inexpensive ways to add incredible benefits to your health with daily use. So grab this citrusy oil and let a little sunshine into your life!

Background & Sourcing

Originally native to Asia, the lemon tree wasn't common in Europe until the 16th century. It is part of the evergreen family and reaches a height of about 20 feet. Lemon essential oil is cold pressed from the rind of the fruit, is known for its cleansing properties, and is widely used in skin care and home cleaning solutions for these benefits. Its fresh, zesty aroma also makes it an important top note in perfumes, as well as an effective odor neutralizer when diffused.

Key Constituents
Constituents are naturally occurring compounds in plants (and therefore essential oils) that give them sprecic health-supporting properties

  • Limonene - known for its anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, anti-stress support, this is a powerful constituent with many health benefits
  • Gamma-terpinene - a potent antioxidant, Chinese medicine believes that this constituent may halt the advance of unwelcome microbes, reducing the risk of colds and 'flu-like symptoms.'
  • Beta-pinene - a powerful antioxidant, some studies have shown beta-pinene to support the body through inflammation, to help calm the mind and to ease the body from the ‘fight or flight' response
Lemon & the Liver

The liver is the filtering organ of the body, so that means that every single thing we ingest or put on our skin goes through it to some degree! Everything gets filtered here, so it is incredibly important we show our livers some love and support them well! Not only is the liver the physical filter of our body, according to traditional Chinese medicine, anger and other negative emotions are stored in the liver. When the liver is functioning properly, it allows for the processing and release of both toxic emotions as well as physical toxins from our environment.

One of the ways that we can support our liver is with alkaline foods (typically greens, vegetables, etc). Because Lemon essential oil is cold pressed from the rind of the fruit, it is alkaline and not acidic (like lemon juice). Adding Lemon to your daily wellness routine is a great way to support your liver on a daily basis.

Lemon & Emotions
adapted from Eryn Jones

As we said above, our liver is a filtering and storage organ, and our emotions can take up root here. There is so much scientific evidence that our emotions have a direct impact on our physical health. Lemon can help with release of many emotions, but here are three to start with:

  • Frustration is closely tied to our expectations (of ourselves, of others, or of a situation or outcome). The other side, or opposite feeling, of Frustration is Accomplishment. Most of the time when we feel frustrated is usually because we fear that we are not going to accomplish what we want to do/ feel/ or have happen! Releasing Emotional Patterns with Essential Oils suggests rubbing a drop or two of Lemon along the ribs, near the sternum (above the bile ducts), and focus on moving beyond your limitations or expectations. If we store up enough frustration that does not get resolved it turns to chronic anger, which is highly associated with liver and gallbladder discomfort or problems. So it's good to let the frustration go!
  • Lack, or the feeling of emptiness- when we don't feel "Complete". The other side of Lack is Full. This also makes this oil great for the Enneagram 7s and Enneagram 4s! Releasing Emotional Patterns suggests rubbing Lemon over the heart and chest while focusing on our completeness and all that we currently possess.
  • Stuck, the opposite of feeling Transformed and moving forward. When we feel stuck we fear experiencing life. So rubbing Lemon on the sinuses can be helpful for branching out and having new experiences and getting un-stuck! Note: do not use Lemon (or other citrus oils) on skin that will be exposed to direct sunlight within two hours.
Product Options

Lemon is a key player in so many of our favorite hair and skin care products (Lavender Shampoo & Body Wash!), our beloved Thieves cleaning products, and essential oil blends such as Thieves, Citrus Fresh, Clarity, Joy and Harmony.
Daily Habits with Lemon

One very simple way to support your liver on a daily basis is with Lemon Vitality! Lemon Vitality is cold pressed from the rind of the fruit, making it alkaline and not acidic, and our livers love alkaline things. But aside from liver support, there are so many ways to use Lemon oil!

Add Lemon to your food and drink
(See more in the Lemon Vitality Recipes Resource linked below!)

Add a few drops of Lemon Vitality to warm water and drink first thing in the morning before any other food or drink.

Add a few drops of Lemon Vitality  to your water and sip throughout the day.

Toss raw greens (kale, arugula, spinach) with olive oil and Lemon Vitality.

Add a few drops of Lemon Vitality to your daily NingXia Red.

Add 1–2 drops of Lemon Vitality to a vegetarian gel capsule and take it daily for immune support and healthy weight management.

Use in place of lemon zest in recipes.

Convince your kids to eat the sliced apples in their school lunch by tossing them in 2 drops of Lemon Vitality essential oil. Lemon Vitality provides powerful antioxidants and will also help keep those vitamin-packed wedges from turning brown.

Add a few drops of oil to a batch of lemon cookies or pound cakes for a delicious twist!

Apply Lemon for its health and skincare benefits

Add Lemon to a roller bottle with R.C. or Raven to help boost the expectorant qualities, support airways and break up mucus.

Add a drop to your conditioner to promote shine in your hair.

Add a drop to your moisturizer or use it as a spot treatment to help with blemishes
.
Use Lemon essential oil as a natural nail polish remover.

Add to the ‘Nature Roller': 10 drops each of Lemon, Lavender and Peppermint in a 5mL bottle and use them when the seasons change for respiratory support!

Use Lemon to spot treat oily skin areas such as the t-zone.

Use Lemon for Household Cleaning

Use to remove stickers on glass (without the nasty chemicals!).

Add 1-2 drops to your dishwasher for sparkling dishes.

Add Lemon to wool dryer balls for a fresh scent (and ditch the dryer sheets!)

Use Lemon to remove childhood art from the walls or furniture! Lemon pairs well with Thieves Household Cleaner for this. Make sure to do a spot check if you are worried about the area.
Pre-treat stains with a couple drops of Lemon oil, then apply Thieves Dish Soap directly to the stain OR make a DIY Stain Stick:
  • 30mL roller bottle
  • Fill just over â…“ with Thieves Dish Soap
  • Add 1 tsp Hydrogen Peroxide
  • Add 15 drops Lemon Essential Oil
  • Fill remainder with Thieves Household Cleaner and shake to mix.
  • Apply directly to stains to pre-treat.
Make a DIY Laundry Scent Booster and ditch toxic laundry products:
  • To a glass jar with a lid add:
  • 1 cup Epsom Salt
  • ½ cup Fine Sea Salt
  • ½ cup Baking Soda
  • 30 drops Lemon Essential Oil (or a mix of desired oils)
To Use - add 2-3 Tbsp directly to the laundry.
Add Lemon to your homemade cleaning products for extra power (just don't apply directly to granite or marble).
  • Add 15 drops of Lemon to diluted Thieves Household Cleaner for a daily spray.
  • Add 10 drops each Pine & Lemon to Thieves Household Cleaner and dilute for a mop solution.
  • Mix 10 drops Lemon oil + ¼ cup Baking Soda  + 1 tsp Thieves Household Cleaner for a kitchen and bath scrub (add more baking soda to consistency as desired)
  • Clean a slow moving drain with baking soda, white vinegar and lemon oil. Pour ¼-½ cup baking soda onto the drain, drop 2-3 drops Lemon onto it, pour ¼-½ cup vinegar onto the mixture and cover with a cloth for 10 minutes. Then pour hot water into the drain.
Diffuse Lemon to neutralize unwanted odors and fill your space with its uplifting and refreshing aroma. It is lovely paired with Peppermint, Thieves or other citrus oils!

Your skin is your largest organ, and the state of your skin can tell you a lot about your body's needs. Your skin is exposed to everything the day brings - heat, cold, sun, wind, environmental toxins, household toxins, and more. So we need to do everything we can to show our skin (and our bodies!) some TLC.

Sadly conventional products are chock full of synthetic ingredients that wreak havoc on the body, especially over time, disrupting hormones, causing allergies (often low-level so we barely notice!), and filling our systems with chemicals that cause damage over time. Switching from conventional, chemical-laden beauty products is a great, simple step in the right direction!

Young Living products contain NO synthetic ingredients. NO hormone disruptors. NO artificial colorings. And you can bet that every ingredient used is of the highest quality.

Nature's Ultra CBD products are crafted using a blend of high-quality CBD isolate and Young Living essential oils. These world-class ingredients combine to form Young Living's exclusive Smart Spectrum CBD. Just one daily dropper of this Smart Spectrum blend will moisturize your skin and promote a youthful glow. Healthy Habits Diffuser Recipes - Jan 2023

Healthy Habits Diffuser Blends

While we certainly don't need a new year to create great health habits, there is something fundamentally refreshing about this time of year. It's a time to rest, to renew, to sit and enjoy the slowness of winter while holding space for our dreams, our needs and our desires.

Winter is a time to reflect on what we want to continue giving energy to and what we want to gratefully release. During this time let's make room for healthy habits on a daily basis. It is the small steps over time that make a lasting difference!

This collection of diffuser blends features some of our favorite oils for health - Lavender, Lemon, Peppermint, Frankincense, Pine, Rosemary and more. These are the blends we are reaching for right now as we extend our winter hibernation, reflect on the year past, set personal and health goals for the future, and refresh and renew our bodies and spirits as we look forward to the year ahead with expectant hope.

Our diffusers are running 24/7 in our homes, supporting our immune systems, respiratory systems, emotions, cleansing the air and making things smell welcome and inviting all at the same time.

Join us as we diffuse (and apply) these favorite healthy blends!

LIFE HACK - You can easily transform these blends into roller recipes and sprays!

To make a 10 mL roller from any recipe - triple the number of drops to make a total of 35-45 total drops, add a carrier of choice (we love V-6 Vegetable Oil Complex) and you're good to go.

To make a 2 oz spray from any recipe - double the number of drops to a total of about 25 drops, ad a splash of witch hazel and fill with filtered water. Spray on upholstered surfaces, bedding, rugs, anywhere you want to freshen!

Check it - many of these recipes contain the Gifts with Purchase oils in January. Get the everyday products you need and get free oils to use in the diffuser too!

Happy diffusing!!

BEATING THE WINTER BLUES

According to Ayurveda, the ancient Indian medical tradition, our health is a holistic balance of mind, body, and spirit, with each person having a dominant energy type, or dosha. During the winter months we are more inclined to rest and hibernate, which can often lead to the winter blues.

Winter is the season of kapha, the dosha marked by a certain heaviness, a tendency toward mental fog, and sometimes weight gain. However, we can work with the body and energy type can help lift the lethargy of winter. Oils can help us sit in this seasonal shift without lowering our emotional energy!

Some great options for winter emotional support include:
  • Jasmine, Neroli, Ylang ylang or Joy
  • Winter Nights
  • Rosemary, Basil or Eucalyptus
  • Palo Santo, Frankincense, or Sacred Mountain
Create an application ritual with some of the oils above and any other oils you choose to add. This ritual is a reminder to not hold on to destructive feelings, which can happen when there's too much kapha.
  • Gently rub the skin between your toes to create warmth in the area. Massage in four to five drops of your chosen oil, spending about three to five seconds between each toe.
  • With the oil still on your fingers and palms, massage the bottoms of your feet, spending thirty seconds on each one.
  • Move up to your wrists and gently massage the area with your thumb; spend ten to fifteen seconds on each wrist.
  • Next, move to the ears; use your fingers to massage the area behind your ears in circles for fifteen seconds.
  • Floating up to the forehead, massage your temples with your forefingers in circles for ten seconds.
  • Finally, cup your palms over your nose and mouth and take five deep inhales.

WINTER EMOTIONS + YOGA

Yoga can have a profound impact on improving energy levels, especially during the winter months. Begin your day with a sun salutation to capitalize on the energy of the sun. Focus on asanas to invigorate a healthy kapha.
  • Choose a diffuser blend below, and set it near your mat.
  • Apply oils to the crown of the head (it won't make your hair greasy if you don't rub it in, just drop it!), wrists and heart.
  • Breathe deeply, repeat a positive mantra or focus on a word or intention you want to bring into your life.

COZY WINTER HOME DIY

Evergreen Essence Room Spray
  • 15 drops Evergreen Essence Essential Oil Blend
  • 10 drops Vanilla Oleoresin
  • 10 drops Tangerine Essential Oil
Add essential oils to a 2 oz glass spray bottle, add a splash of witch hazel & top with water! Spritz on all the things!
DIY Frosted Forest Hand Soap
  • Foaming hand soap bottle or recycle a YL one!
  • 2 Tbsp Liquid Castile Soap
  • 10 drops each Peppermint &Idaho Blue Spruce essential oil
  • 5 drops Vetiver essential oil
  • 1 tsp Vitamin E oil
Add essential oils, Vitamin E oil and Castile Soap to the bottle, then top with water leaving 1" at the top
Sugar & Spice Wool Dryer Balls
There's something about the smell of warm fresh laundry fresh from the dryer - especially when combining Thieves Laundry Soap and essential oil infused wool dryer balls!
  • Organic wool dryer balls
  • Ylang ylang, Vanilla & Cinnamon Bark pre-mixed in a dropper bottle, about 10-15 drops of each
Add 4-5 drops of essential oils to each dryer ball. Let the dryer balls air dry for about an hour or to speed up the process you can dry them alone. This will allow the oil to absorb into the wool and not transfer to your clothes.
When it's time to dry your clothes - toss the dryer balls into the dryer with your clothing. Refresh the oils every 4-5 loads or more often if you prefer a stronger scent.
Winter Spice Orange Garland
This is one of our favorite things to do every year. It is beautiful, smells amazing, adds a lovely touch to any room and is so easy to make. It may be a holiday tradition for some, but leaving it up or making it in the new year is a great way to add a touch of brightness to your home!
  • About 5 oranges or a mix of oranges, clementines and grapefruit for varied sizes and colors
  • Essential oils: Cinnamon Bark, Vanilla, Clove, Believe, & Thieves
  • Fresh cranberries and cinnamon sticks (optional)
Step 1 - Slice your oranges in circles to ¼ to ½ inch in thickness and arrange them on a non-stick surface or parchment paper. Pour 2-3 drops of essential oils on each slice, then set them in a cool oven and turn the temperature onto the lowest setting your oven will allow. (If your oven does not go below 300, set it there and use a wooden spoon to prop the oven open slightly and allow some heat to dissipate.)
Step 2 - Leave the slices in the oven for about 5 hours, then shut the oven off and leave the oranges in there overnight or until completely cool. They will be fairly dry, but will continue to dry out over time. You don't want to over dry them in the oven because they can start to burn!
Step 3 - Once they are dry, string them with some twine, alternating with a few varying sized slices and a cranberry or two, a tied cinnamon stick, whatever you like!

FOR THE YOUNG &
YOUNG AT HEART

Colder temperatures keeping you inside? Try out some of these simple crafts to fill your days with joy!

Clay Leaf Dish
This simple craft gets everyone outdoors and can even be a school project with just a little imagination! It makes a lovely oil tray or a handmade gift.
  • Air dry clay
  • Craft paper
  • Rolling pin
  • Craft paint (we like the metallic colors!) + brushes
  • Modge Podge gloss or other sealer
  • Various leaves from your yard
Step 1 - Cut out a piece of air dry clay, then roll it out onto craft paper to about 1/2 inch thick, making sure your leaf will fit. Then, press your leaf (vein side down) onto the clay. Remove the leaf from the clay, and cut around the outline with a knife, then remove the excess clay from around your imprint.
Step 2 - Go around the perimeter of the leaf and gently press the sides up and in to create a small edge. Allow the clay to air dry and harden on a baking rack for 24 hours.
Step 3 - Paint!  Once the paint is dry, cover with a coat of Modge Podge gloss, then dry for 24 hours. After the sealer is dry, have your children sign the back and write the year.
Essential Oil Infused Play Dough
This is a fun one to get your children to make with you OR to make and surprise them with after school!
  • 2 cups flour (can use gluten-free if desired)
  • 1 cup salt
  • 2 tsp cream of tartar
  • 1 Tbsp olive or coconut oil
  • 2 cups cold water
  • 5 drops essential oil: Lavender, Peace & Calming, Tangerine, and/or Believe
  • Natural food coloring, optional
Step 1 - Mix flour, salt, cream of tartar, oil, and water in a medium saucepan. Stir over medium heat for about 5 minutes, until the dough has reached the right consistency.
Step 2 - Let cool, split into 3 balls, and knead in essential oils and optional food coloring until it is distributed evenly throughout each ball of playdough. Store in an airtight container.

Tree Oils & Emotions

Tree oils like spruce and fir contain alpha-pinene, a constituent that helps the mind and body reach a calming, peaceful environment. Tree oils are a wonderful tool for processing feelings of being unimportant, un-nurtured or disempowered.

Believe contains tree oils plus citrus and floral notes, and it is a great oil blend to reach for when you feel like you are comparing yourself to others, are feeling undervalued or as though your unique voice has no place. The alternate side to feeling unimportant is Empowerment. When we can rest secure in who we are then comparison melts away and our unique blend of magic can shine!
