Idaho Blue Spruce is like a walk through an evergreen forest on a crips, cool day. Gentle and welcoming, calming and grounding. This oil can be used during meditation or prayer to enhance your practice and inspire spiritual connection and pairs well in the diffuser with spice and citrus oils as well as other grounding blends.

Each month we focus on using an oil everyday to help us in accomplishing our goals. Join us in choosing a method of application and simply getting this oil on and around you every day in November. My goal is to use up an entire bottle for my personal use.

Idaho Blue Spruce AT A Glance

Background
Considered a sacred tree by Native American tribes in the Northwest, it was used traditionally for smudging and purification rites. Spruce leaves, bark, and gum have been used historically by Native Americans for many things - spiritual ceremonies, physical health, poultices, digestive needs, immune support and more.

The oil is steam distilled from wood, bark, and needles of the Picea pungens tree, an evergreen species native to the central Rocky Mountains. It is produced at the Young Living Highland Flats Tree Farm and Distillery in Naples, Idaho. 

Key Constituents

Constituents are naturally occurring compounds in plants (and therefore essential oils) that give them specific health-supporting properties.

  • Alpha-pinene: a powerful antioxidant, some studies have shown alpha-pinene to support the body through inflammation and to help calm the mind
  • Limonene: known for its anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, anti-stress support, this is a powerful constituent with many health benefits
  • Camphene: some studies may show that this constituent supports cardiovascular health, may help reduce pain and inflammation, support the body's defenses to fungal infections
Idaho Blue Spruce is an excellent oil for the guys as it helps balance and support hormone levels, especially testosterone. Because of its constituents Idaho Blue Spruce may help optimize both testosterone and growth hormone levels. Women can also use Idaho Blue Spruce for healthy testosterone as well.

Blue Spruce Essential Oil has many health benefits, including boosting Testosterone production. Dr. Dan Purser conducted a trial which had the males subjects ingest 8 drops of Blue Spruce Essential Oil within a capsule one daily. The subjects showed and increase of 30% in Testosterone levels after only two weeks and some subjects showed up to 100% increased levels after 4 weeks. The subjects reported increased physical and mental performance in line with their new higher testosterone levels a year later. Source.

Daily Habits with Idaho Blue Spruce

Diffuse or inhale Idaho Blue Spruce to fill your space with its tranquil, woodsy aroma.

Apply to your wrists, neck, or ear lobes during yoga, meditation, or prayer

Combine with Geranium and Grapefruit in a roller bottle and dilute with V-6 Vegetable Oil Complex to create a fresh, floral perfume

Add a few drops to a lightweight carrier oil, such as jojoba or grapeseed, to create a natural beard oil. To a 2 oz glass dropper bottle, add:

  • 15 drops Idaho Blue Spruce
  • 10 drops Bergamot
  • Optional: 10 drops Shutran
  • fill the rest with jojoba or grapeseed oil
    Apply to beard and skin and gently massage to keep the hair and skin happy and healthy
Make a cologne roller. To a 10 mL roller bottle, add:
  • 10 drops Idaho Blue Spruce
  • 10 drops Bergamot
  • 10 drops Cedarwood or Northern Lights Black Spurce
  • 3 drops Ylang Ylang
  • Fill with carrier oil of choice
Make a quick Winter Wonderland room spray. To a 2 oz glass spray bottle, add:

  • 15 drops Idaho Blue Spruce
  • 10 drops Cedarwood
  • Optional: 10 drops Orange
  • Fill with distilled water
    Spray around everywhere! You can also sprits fresh greenery (wreaths, garlands, etc) to freshen them.

  • Frosted Forest: 4 drops Idaho Blue Spruce + 3 drops Peppermint + 2 drops Cedarwood

  • Autumn Wreath: 4 drops Idaho Blue Spruce + 4 drops Thieves

DIY - Beeswax Jar Candles

DIY Beeswax Jar Candles
DIY for Holiday Gifts!

The ambiance of candles is such a lovely addition to the home, especially during the colder months. And since we ditched scented candles long ago (so full of icky chemicals), we love making these simple beeswax jar candles and customizing the scent.

Spruce, Peppermint and Orange for the fall, Purification, Tangerine and Lavender for the spring - the options are limitless. Check out all the diffuser recipes on this blog for oil combinations.

Supplies needed:
  • Natural yellow beeswax or white beeswax pellets
  • 1 tsp per jar of organic coconut oil
  • Hemp wicks
  • Wick stickers
  • A wick centering device
  • Glass jars or candle tins
  • 50-75 drops essential oils per jar
  • Twine and fresh rosemary or lavender sprigs for garnish, if desired
Instructions:
  1. Set a wide, shallow dish on the stove with water and heat to medium-low, very gently boiling.
  2. While the water heats, prepare your jars by adding a sticker to the metal ring of the wick and press firmly to the bottom of your glass jar. Align the wick holder on the top of the jar to keep the wick from moving to one side.
  3. Pour about 1/3 of the jar full of beeswax pellets, then add 1/2 tsp coconut oil. Repeat the layers, finishing with the beeswax to new the top of the jar. As you fill the jars, make sure that the wick remains in the center. The coconut oil is optional but helps to slow the burning of the beeswax so your candles will last longer.
  4. Once the water is boiling gently, place jars in and allow the wax and coconut oil to melt. Add more beeswax pellets as needed as the wax melts and naturally lowers.
  5. Once the wax is melted, remove from the water bath and place on a baking rack to cool. Add essential oils while wax is cooling, dropping the oils in various places around the wax.
  6. Allow the wax to cool and harden, then tie with twine and a sprig of rosemary or other garnish as desired. This also makes a lovely gift!

Sadly, convention chest rubs are filled with synthetic additives and diluents, and even the 'natural' options are less than ideal. Many options use petroleum as a base. Petroleum (petrolatum) is often not fully refined in the US, which means it can be contaminated with toxic chemicals called polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons.

Many 'natural' chest rubs contain impure essential oils or other lower-grade components that don't meet the same standards as the ingredients found in Young Living's products. The active ingredient in the most popular over the counter chest rubs is actually a synthetic version of Ravinstsara essential oil. And we are always going to choose the original over a synthetic copy, especially when it comes to our health and our children's health.

To Use

When we begin to fall below the wellness line, our emotional and mental health is also affected. All of our body systems are interconnected, so it makes sense that we often feel run down, fatigued, exhausted even on an emotional level when our defenses go down.

Sometimes the emotional and mental effects hit first. So if your feeling run down, vulnerable, easily overwhelmed or triggered, stop and take inventory of your physical health as well. The organisms that invade our cells and bring us down affect our emotions too.

Why are Amino Acids Important?

Amino acids are classified as non-essential amino acids (you produce them on your own), conditionally essential amino acids (can usually be produced by your body), and essential amino acids (EAAs cannot be made by the body so you must get them through diet or supplementation).

Of the EAAs, three are superstars - the branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs) - leucine, isoleucine, and valine. BACCs make up about 35% of your muscle tissue.

Your ability to maintain, or even build lean body mass, or muscle, is based on the levels of protein synthesis and protein breakdown throughout the day. As we age, protein breakdown tends to accelerate. To slow the protein breakdown you can eat more high quality protein and supplement with EAAs.

Since amino acids play such an essential role in building and maintaining lean body mass, they must be a consistent part of a health diet.

It's no secret that we are crazy about NingXia Red, and here are all there reasons why. Tangerine essential oil has a sweet citrus scent that can create a happy, contented mindset when diffused. This versatile oil is wonderful for emotions, helps purify the air of odors, promotes healthy hair and skin, and smells wonderful in so many diffuser blends. Taken internally, it offers a fresh, sweet, citrus flavor and can provide digestive, lymphatic, and immune support. This is an oil we definitely want in our homes and in our bodies.


Each month we focus on using an oil everyday to help us in accomplishing our goals. Join us in choosing a method of application and simply getting this oil on and around you every day in September. My goal is to use up an entire bottle for my personal use.

Tangerine AT A Glance

  • Contains the constituents limonene, gamma-terpinene, and myrcene
  • Found in Dream Catcher, Joy, and Inner Child essential oil blends, as well as Relaxation Massage Oil
  • Cold pressed from the rind of the fruit, making the oil alkaline (not acidic)

Tangerine + Oxidative Stress

Our bodies' cells produce free radicals during normal metabolic processes. However, cells also produce antioxidants that neutralize these free radicals. In general, the body is able to maintain a balance between antioxidants and free radicals. 

Sometimes, and especially in our ever-modernizing world, the balance tips towards excess free radical production. Several things contribute to this, but include inflammatory foods, emotional and mental stress, health conditions, infection, radiation, and environmental toxins. A large body of scientific evidence suggests that long-term oxidative stress contributes to the development of a range of chronic conditions.

Enter Tangerine essential oil (and other citrus oils). Tangerine essential oil contains limonene, a potential free radical scavenger. THIS IS HUGE! We have a powerful tool in our hands for supporting our bodies and upping the antioxidant potential.

Tangerine + Emotions

We just mentioned that Tangerine essential oil contains limonene, a potential free radical scavenger. This is important for our emotional health because less oxidative stress (less free radicals = less 'negative' emotions). Limonene also helps boost the mood and calm the central nervous system, making Tangerine a wonderful oils for soothing the emotions.

Tangerine can help promote feelings of calm and happiness, supporting learning and memory and calming nervousness.

Daily Habits with Tangerine

  • Dilute with a carrier oil and apply to your soles for happy feet and circulation.
  • Add to your car vent diffuser or a cotton ball stashed under the seats for an uplifting scent while you commute 
  • Give a glass of lemonade a twist by adding 1-2 drops of Tangerine Vitality.
  • Add 1-2 drops of Tangerine Vitality to your daily NingXia Red.
  • Add a few drops each of Tangerine and Tea Tree to your daily shampoo and massage into your scalp for a sweet, tingly sensation.

Lemon Vitality Essential Oil

Give your morning routine a healthy boost with Lemon Avocado Toast.
  • 1 large ripe avocado
  • 1-2 slices of your favorite bread
  • Mash avocado lightly in a bowl and add
    • 1/4 tsp garlic powder
    • 1-2 drops Lemon Vitality essential oil
    • salt & pepper to taste
  • Toast the bread, then spread the seasoned avocado on top. Add a fried egg if desired or enjoy as is.
Start your day with some gentle liver and immune system support:
  • Add a drizzle of honey (optional) to the bottom of a mug, add 1-2 drops of Lemon Vitality essential oil, then fill with warm (not boiling) water.
  • This is also a great practice when defenses start to go down if you're feeling the need for some respiratory support that the colder months often require.

Make a daily wellness tea! (Also great for acute needs when the body's defenses start to go down.)
  • Warm water or herbal tea (Echinacea is great)
  • 1 drop Thieves Vitality

As the gatekeepers of our home we have such a great opportunity to bring in healthy products and create healthy habits for ourselves and families! 

Join us as we detox our bathroom shelves and switch out conventional kids' toothpaste for Young Living's KidScents Toothpaste.

Brushing teeth can sometimes be a struggle with kids, but using the citrusy KidScents Toothpaste from Young Living makes it so much more enjoyable! Not only will your kids love the taste, this advanced formula cleans teeth without any of the harsh additives found in most commercial toothpastes. Fluoride and GMO are, this plant-based toothpaste supports healthy-looking gums and teeth and is infused with he highest quality essential oils you can find.

Sadly, conventional kids' toothpaste formulas are filled with synthetic additives, artificial flavoring and coloring agents that are not just unnecessary, they are harmful when ingested in small qualities over time. The membrane lining of the mouth has an absorption efficiency of more than 90%, which means when we brush our teeth, we are brushing our gums too. And even if toothpaste isn't swallowed, it is still entering the bloodstream via the mucosal lining. Here are a few top offenders:

  • Sodium Laurel Sulfate (SLS): SLS promotes the foaming action of conventional toothpastes, but does nothing as far as efficacy. It has been linked to the development of canker sores and can change the way the taste buds work. (This is why everything tastes bad after you brush your teeth!)
  • Triclosan: This chemical is common in toothpaste and has been linked to antibiotic resistance and endocrine disruption. Disruption in the endocrine system can create serious effects, especially over time. This is also an active ingredient in hand sanitizers.
  • Artificial Dyes and Colors: To make the blue or red stripe that is perfectly placed in the middle of the toothpaste, manufacturers add food coloring, often a petroleum based product. Red 40 , Yellow 5 and Yellow 6 are the worst according to a report from the Center for Science in the Public Interest. Some of these food dyes come with side effects like hyperactivity and hypersensitivity reactions.
  • Propylene Glycol: Propylene glycol is used as the surfactant in conventional toothpaste to promote foaming. It is found extensively in paints, enamels, and antifreeze. Pharmaceutical grade propylene glycol is common in personal care products. Unfortunately, it can cause skin, lung and eye irrational.
  • Titanium Dioxide: White titanium dioxide is added to make toothpaste white, and is entirely unnecessary. It is also found in supplements, added to foods and to make paint white. Titanium dioxide is currently under review as far as its safety.
