Lemon Oil Spotlight - Jan 2023

Lemon Essential Oil Spotlight

Versatile, bright and joyful, just like sunshine. That's how we would describe this oil! Lemon essential oil benefits skin and hair as much as its aroma enhances your environment and supports your mood. This best-selling oil can be used in so many ways, making it a staple for every home.

Just a Drop of Lemon

  • Has a fresh, uplifting, citrus aroma
  • Helps neutralize unwanted odors
  • Cleansing and purifying
  • Great addition to cleaning products & DIYs
  • Removes sticky adhesives and residues from non-porous surfaces
  • Can support the immune system when taken internally
  • Has natural mucolytic properties
  • Is high in limonene
  • Contains antioxidants
Read on for more about why we love this oil and ways to use it daily….

Lemon essential oil has many benefits similar to sunshine. It can help brighten our moods, help us find and focus on the good, helps clean and purify and is good for overall health and wellness! Lemon is one of the most inexpensive ways to add incredible benefits to your health with daily use. So grab this citrusy oil and let a little sunshine into your life!

Background & Sourcing

Originally native to Asia, the lemon tree wasn't common in Europe until the 16th century. It is part of the evergreen family and reaches a height of about 20 feet. Lemon essential oil is cold pressed from the rind of the fruit, is known for its cleansing properties, and is widely used in skin care and home cleaning solutions for these benefits. Its fresh, zesty aroma also makes it an important top note in perfumes, as well as an effective odor neutralizer when diffused.

Key Constituents
Constituents are naturally occurring compounds in plants (and therefore essential oils) that give them sprecic health-supporting properties

  • Limonene - known for its anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, anti-stress support, this is a powerful constituent with many health benefits
  • Gamma-terpinene - a potent antioxidant, Chinese medicine believes that this constituent may halt the advance of unwelcome microbes, reducing the risk of colds and 'flu-like symptoms.'
  • Beta-pinene - a powerful antioxidant, some studies have shown beta-pinene to support the body through inflammation, to help calm the mind and to ease the body from the ‘fight or flight' response
Lemon & the Liver

The liver is the filtering organ of the body, so that means that every single thing we ingest or put on our skin goes through it to some degree! Everything gets filtered here, so it is incredibly important we show our livers some love and support them well! Not only is the liver the physical filter of our body, according to traditional Chinese medicine, anger and other negative emotions are stored in the liver. When the liver is functioning properly, it allows for the processing and release of both toxic emotions as well as physical toxins from our environment.

One of the ways that we can support our liver is with alkaline foods (typically greens, vegetables, etc). Because Lemon essential oil is cold pressed from the rind of the fruit, it is alkaline and not acidic (like lemon juice). Adding Lemon to your daily wellness routine is a great way to support your liver on a daily basis.

Lemon & Emotions
adapted from Eryn Jones

As we said above, our liver is a filtering and storage organ, and our emotions can take up root here. There is so much scientific evidence that our emotions have a direct impact on our physical health. Lemon can help with release of many emotions, but here are three to start with:

  • Frustration is closely tied to our expectations (of ourselves, of others, or of a situation or outcome). The other side, or opposite feeling, of Frustration is Accomplishment. Most of the time when we feel frustrated is usually because we fear that we are not going to accomplish what we want to do/ feel/ or have happen! Releasing Emotional Patterns with Essential Oils suggests rubbing a drop or two of Lemon along the ribs, near the sternum (above the bile ducts), and focus on moving beyond your limitations or expectations. If we store up enough frustration that does not get resolved it turns to chronic anger, which is highly associated with liver and gallbladder discomfort or problems. So it's good to let the frustration go!
  • Lack, or the feeling of emptiness- when we don't feel "Complete". The other side of Lack is Full. This also makes this oil great for the Enneagram 7s and Enneagram 4s! Releasing Emotional Patterns suggests rubbing Lemon over the heart and chest while focusing on our completeness and all that we currently possess.
  • Stuck, the opposite of feeling Transformed and moving forward. When we feel stuck we fear experiencing life. So rubbing Lemon on the sinuses can be helpful for branching out and having new experiences and getting un-stuck! Note: do not use Lemon (or other citrus oils) on skin that will be exposed to direct sunlight within two hours.
Product Options

Lemon is a key player in so many of our favorite hair and skin care products (Lavender Shampoo & Body Wash!), our beloved Thieves cleaning products, and essential oil blends such as Thieves, Citrus Fresh, Clarity, Joy and Harmony.
Daily Habits with Lemon

One very simple way to support your liver on a daily basis is with Lemon Vitality! Lemon Vitality is cold pressed from the rind of the fruit, making it alkaline and not acidic, and our livers love alkaline things. But aside from liver support, there are so many ways to use Lemon oil!

Add Lemon to your food and drink
(See more in the Lemon Vitality Recipes Resource linked below!)

Add a few drops of Lemon Vitality to warm water and drink first thing in the morning before any other food or drink.

Add a few drops of Lemon Vitality  to your water and sip throughout the day.

Toss raw greens (kale, arugula, spinach) with olive oil and Lemon Vitality.

Add a few drops of Lemon Vitality to your daily NingXia Red.

Add 1–2 drops of Lemon Vitality to a vegetarian gel capsule and take it daily for immune support and healthy weight management.

Use in place of lemon zest in recipes.

Convince your kids to eat the sliced apples in their school lunch by tossing them in 2 drops of Lemon Vitality essential oil. Lemon Vitality provides powerful antioxidants and will also help keep those vitamin-packed wedges from turning brown.

Add a few drops of oil to a batch of lemon cookies or pound cakes for a delicious twist!

Apply Lemon for its health and skincare benefits

Add Lemon to a roller bottle with R.C. or Raven to help boost the expectorant qualities, support airways and break up mucus.

Add a drop to your conditioner to promote shine in your hair.

Add a drop to your moisturizer or use it as a spot treatment to help with blemishes
.
Use Lemon essential oil as a natural nail polish remover.

Add to the ‘Nature Roller': 10 drops each of Lemon, Lavender and Peppermint in a 5mL bottle and use them when the seasons change for respiratory support!

Use Lemon to spot treat oily skin areas such as the t-zone.

Use Lemon for Household Cleaning

Use to remove stickers on glass (without the nasty chemicals!).

Add 1-2 drops to your dishwasher for sparkling dishes.

Add Lemon to wool dryer balls for a fresh scent (and ditch the dryer sheets!)

Use Lemon to remove childhood art from the walls or furniture! Lemon pairs well with Thieves Household Cleaner for this. Make sure to do a spot check if you are worried about the area.
Pre-treat stains with a couple drops of Lemon oil, then apply Thieves Dish Soap directly to the stain OR make a DIY Stain Stick:
  • 30mL roller bottle
  • Fill just over â…“ with Thieves Dish Soap
  • Add 1 tsp Hydrogen Peroxide
  • Add 15 drops Lemon Essential Oil
  • Fill remainder with Thieves Household Cleaner and shake to mix.
  • Apply directly to stains to pre-treat.
Make a DIY Laundry Scent Booster and ditch toxic laundry products:
  • To a glass jar with a lid add:
  • 1 cup Epsom Salt
  • ½ cup Fine Sea Salt
  • ½ cup Baking Soda
  • 30 drops Lemon Essential Oil (or a mix of desired oils)
To Use - add 2-3 Tbsp directly to the laundry.
Add Lemon to your homemade cleaning products for extra power (just don't apply directly to granite or marble).
  • Add 15 drops of Lemon to diluted Thieves Household Cleaner for a daily spray.
  • Add 10 drops each Pine & Lemon to Thieves Household Cleaner and dilute for a mop solution.
  • Mix 10 drops Lemon oil + ¼ cup Baking Soda  + 1 tsp Thieves Household Cleaner for a kitchen and bath scrub (add more baking soda to consistency as desired)
  • Clean a slow moving drain with baking soda, white vinegar and lemon oil. Pour ¼-½ cup baking soda onto the drain, drop 2-3 drops Lemon onto it, pour ¼-½ cup vinegar onto the mixture and cover with a cloth for 10 minutes. Then pour hot water into the drain.
Diffuse Lemon to neutralize unwanted odors and fill your space with its uplifting and refreshing aroma. It is lovely paired with Peppermint, Thieves or other citrus oils!

BEATING THE WINTER BLUES

According to Ayurveda, the ancient Indian medical tradition, our health is a holistic balance of mind, body, and spirit, with each person having a dominant energy type, or dosha. During the winter months we are more inclined to rest and hibernate, which can often lead to the winter blues.

Winter is the season of kapha, the dosha marked by a certain heaviness, a tendency toward mental fog, and sometimes weight gain. However, we can work with the body and energy type can help lift the lethargy of winter. Oils can help us sit in this seasonal shift without lowering our emotional energy!

Some great options for winter emotional support include:
  • Jasmine, Neroli, Ylang ylang or Joy
  • Winter Nights
  • Rosemary, Basil or Eucalyptus
  • Palo Santo, Frankincense, or Sacred Mountain
Create an application ritual with some of the oils above and any other oils you choose to add. This ritual is a reminder to not hold on to destructive feelings, which can happen when there's too much kapha.
  • Gently rub the skin between your toes to create warmth in the area. Massage in four to five drops of your chosen oil, spending about three to five seconds between each toe.
  • With the oil still on your fingers and palms, massage the bottoms of your feet, spending thirty seconds on each one.
  • Move up to your wrists and gently massage the area with your thumb; spend ten to fifteen seconds on each wrist.
  • Next, move to the ears; use your fingers to massage the area behind your ears in circles for fifteen seconds.
  • Floating up to the forehead, massage your temples with your forefingers in circles for ten seconds.
  • Finally, cup your palms over your nose and mouth and take five deep inhales.

WINTER EMOTIONS + YOGA

Yoga can have a profound impact on improving energy levels, especially during the winter months. Begin your day with a sun salutation to capitalize on the energy of the sun. Focus on asanas to invigorate a healthy kapha.
  • Choose a diffuser blend below, and set it near your mat.
  • Apply oils to the crown of the head (it won't make your hair greasy if you don't rub it in, just drop it!), wrists and heart.
  • Breathe deeply, repeat a positive mantra or focus on a word or intention you want to bring into your life.

COZY WINTER HOME DIY

  • 10 drops Tangerine Essential Oil
Add essential oils to a 2 oz glass spray bottle, add a splash of witch hazel & top with water! Spritz on all the things!
DIY Frosted Forest Hand Soap
  • Foaming hand soap bottle or recycle a YL one!
  • 2 Tbsp Liquid Castile Soap
  • 10 drops each Peppermint &Idaho Blue Spruce essential oil
  • 5 drops Vetiver essential oil
  • 1 tsp Vitamin E oil
Add essential oils, Vitamin E oil and Castile Soap to the bottle, then top with water leaving 1" at the top
Sugar & Spice Wool Dryer Balls
There's something about the smell of warm fresh laundry fresh from the dryer - especially when combining Thieves Laundry Soap and essential oil infused wool dryer balls!
  • Organic wool dryer balls
  • Ylang ylang, Vanilla & Cinnamon Bark pre-mixed in a dropper bottle, about 10-15 drops of each
Add 4-5 drops of essential oils to each dryer ball. Let the dryer balls air dry for about an hour or to speed up the process you can dry them alone. This will allow the oil to absorb into the wool and not transfer to your clothes.
When it's time to dry your clothes - toss the dryer balls into the dryer with your clothing. Refresh the oils every 4-5 loads or more often if you prefer a stronger scent.
Winter Spice Orange Garland
This is one of our favorite things to do every year. It is beautiful, smells amazing, adds a lovely touch to any room and is so easy to make. It may be a holiday tradition for some, but leaving it up or making it in the new year is a great way to add a touch of brightness to your home!
  • About 5 oranges or a mix of oranges, clementines and grapefruit for varied sizes and colors
  • Essential oils: Cinnamon Bark, Vanilla, Clove, Believe, & Thieves
  • Fresh cranberries and cinnamon sticks (optional)
Step 1 - Slice your oranges in circles to ¼ to ½ inch in thickness and arrange them on a non-stick surface or parchment paper. Pour 2-3 drops of essential oils on each slice, then set them in a cool oven and turn the temperature onto the lowest setting your oven will allow. (If your oven does not go below 300, set it there and use a wooden spoon to prop the oven open slightly and allow some heat to dissipate.)
Step 2 - Leave the slices in the oven for about 5 hours, then shut the oven off and leave the oranges in there overnight or until completely cool. They will be fairly dry, but will continue to dry out over time. You don't want to over dry them in the oven because they can start to burn!
Step 3 - Once they are dry, string them with some twine, alternating with a few varying sized slices and a cranberry or two, a tied cinnamon stick, whatever you like!

DIY Lemon Ginger Cough Drops - Jan 2022

DIY Lemon Ginger Cough Drops

While we are big fans of the Thieves Cough Drops, sometimes you just want something a little different. Try these simple homemade cough drops with lemon, ginger, and clove! This combination can help soothe a sore throat and suppress coughs naturally. Recipe is adapted from Hello Glow.

Supplies Needed:

  • Small saucepan
  • Baking sheet
  • Unbleached parchment paper
  • Candy thermometer (optional)
Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1 cup organic coconut or granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon raw honey (ideally local honey)
  • 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
  • 5 drops Lemon Vitality
  • 1/4 tsp ground ginger (can add more for taste)
  • 2 drops Ginger Vitality
  • 1/8 tsp ground cloves
  • 1 drop Clove Vitality
  • Powdered sugar or cornstarch for coating
Directions:

  • Gather your ingredients, then line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  • Combine all ingredients except the powdered sugar/cornstarch in a saucepan and heat to 300F. Whisk frequently while cooking to prevent sticking and check the coloring and consistency of the solution.
  • After about 10-20 minutes, test the consistency by dropping a small of the solution amount into ice water. If the cough drop cracks, the solution is ready. If it is still chewy, then cook the mixture for 5 more minutes. Repeat as needed.
  • Remove from the heat completely, add essential oils, and allow the mixture to cool slightly. Then, drop small circles onto the parchment-lined baking sheet and allow to cool completely.
  • Once cooled, dust lightly with powdered sugar or cornstarch (to prevent sticking together). Alternatively, wrap each cough drop in wax paper. Store in an airtight container away from heat or moisture.

Winter Wonderland Diffuser Recipes - Dec 2022

Winter Wonderland Diffuser Blends

Whether you're walking in a winter wonderland or basking in the warm sunshine this time of year, this collection of diffuser blends will bring you all the cozy feelings of the season!

Nature itself shows us that winter is a time to slow down, to rest, to find presence with those around us. It is a time of shorter days and longer nights, of cooler temperatures and warm fireplaces. And no matter where this winter finds you, we hope it is surrounded by joy and beauty within the day to day.

These blends feature tree oils, mint, and citrus, plus the warm scents of spice oils like Vanilla and Cinnamon Bark. Tree oils are emotionally calming and wonderful for grounding our hearts and minds during this season of slowness. Tree oils are also wonderful for the immune system, which is perfect during a time of gathering with loved ones!

Citrus oils are happy and uplifting, adding a brightness to these blends that is welcoming and comforting. Peppermint is crisp and clear like freshly fallen snow and cool winter air and pairs perfectly with tree oils and citrus. The blends often finish with a hint of warmth from Vanilla, Clove or Cinnamon Bark or with a sweetness from uplifting floral oils like Joy and Ylang Ylang.

Our diffusers are running 24/7 in our homes, supporting our immune systems, respiratory systems, emotions, cleansing the air and making things smell happy and inviting all at the same time. Join us this month as we diffuse these favorite blends for love and connection.

LIFE HACK - You can easily transform these blends into roller recipes and sprays!

To make a 10 mL roller from any recipe - triple the number of drops to make a total of 35-45 total drops, add a carrier of choice (we love V-6 Vegetable Oil Complex) and you're good to go.

To make a 2 oz spray from any recipe - double the number of drops to a total of about 25 drops, ad a splash of witch hazel and fill with filtered water. Spray on upholstered surfaces, bedding, rugs, anywhere you want to freshen!

Check it - many of these recipes contain the Gifts with Purchase oils in December. Get the everyday products you need and get free oils to use in the diffuser too!

If you have ever wanted to bring the peace, tranquility and aroma of an evergreen forest to your space, then this is the blend for you!!

Evergreen Essence essential oil blend is formulated with various conifer oils, including Pine, White Fir, Spruce, Black Pine, Idaho Blue Spruce, Lodgepole Pine, Scotch Pine, and Pinyon Pine. This combination feels like walking through a snow-draped forest!!

Just A Drop of Evergreen Essence…
  • Has a rich conifer aroma
  • Brings nature's tranquility inside your home
  • Contains multiple varieties of Pine essential oil, which are wonderful for immune support
  • Calming and grounding
  • Conifer oils provide muscle and tension support
Evergreen Essence & Emotions

Evergreen Essence is a blend of conifer oils, all of which contain alpha-pinene, a constituent that helps the mind and body reach a calming, peaceful environment. Tree oils can be a wonderful tool for processing feelings of Unimportant, Un-nurtured or Disempowered. The Spruce and Evergreen family of oils are the ones to reach for when you feel like you are comparing yourself to others, are feeling undervalued or as though your unique voice has no place. The alternate side to feeling unimportant is Empowerment. When we can rest secure in who we are then comparison melts away and our unique blend of magic can shine!

A 2011 study in Pharmacognosy Magazine looked at the anxiolytic effects of an alcohol based pine needle extract and its ability to soothe depression in rats. Bottom line: however you approach it, pine and other conifer essential oils can be powerful health tools!
Interestingly, we are often drawn to these oils during the colder months, when we are gathering with friends and family, remembering years past, and even grieving the things we have lost. Pine, Spruce, and Fir are calming and grounding and help us connect to feelings of strength and protection, which is something we need while processing those emotions. Adding Evergreen Essence to your daily routine is a wonderful way to support mental and emotional health during these times!

Read more about how to process and release emotions in this powerful book Releasing Emotional Patterns with Essential Oils.

Holiday Spice Wool Dryer Balls
There's something about the smell of warm fresh laundry fresh from the dryer - especially when combining Thieves Laundry Soap and essential oil infused wool dryer balls!
  • Organic wool dryer balls
  • Essential oils of choice - Christmas Spirit, Peppermint + Vanilla, Cinnamon Bark + Orange, Stress Away + Peppermint, Cardamom & Orange
Step 1 - Add 4-5 drops of essential oils to each dryer ball.
Step 2 - Let the dryer balls air dry for about an hour or to speed up the process you can dry them alone. This will allow the oil to absorb into the wool and not transfer to your clothes. Even better, add oils to the wool balls after you empty dry clothes from the dryer so you're all set for the next load.
Step 3 - When it's time to dry your clothes - toss the dryer balls into the dryer with your clothing. Refresh the oils every 4-5 loads or more often if you prefer a stronger scent.

  • Place a few drops of oil on a cotton ball or pad, oil side down in a zip lock bag. Add your cards to the bag and zip closed overnight. Mail as usual!
DIY Oil Infused Bottle Brush Trees
Give your bottle brush trees a little something extra this year - infuse them with festive essential oils!
  • Large pitcher or jar (big enough for your trees)
  • Distilled water
  • Witch hazel
  • Oils of your choice! We love Believe, Christmas Spirit, Northern Lights Black Spruce, Winter Nights, Orange or Pine
  • Bottle brush trees
  • Fill the jar or pitcher almost full of water and add a splash of witch hazel. Add about 20-30 drops of oil and stir with a silicone or metal spoon. Hold your tree upside down for about a minute in the water, then take it out and let it air dry!
Spiced Orange & Cranberry Garland
This is one of our favorite things to do every year. It is beautiful, smells amazing, adds a festive touch to any room and is so easy to make!
  • About 5 oranges or a mix of oranges, clementines and grapefruit for varied sizes and colors
  • Essential oils: Christmas Spirit, Cinnamon Bark, Vanilla, Clove, Believe, Thieves
  • Fresh cranberries and cinnamon sticks
Alternatively, you can use a dehydrator, if you have one.
Step 3 - Once they are dry, string them with some twine, alternating with a few varying sized slices and a cranberry or two, a tied cinnamon stick, whatever you like! Hang them in your home for some delicious smelling holiday cheer!

Simple Crafts for the Holidays

Whether your kiddos are coming out of school for a few weeks or you just want some simple, fun activities for the season, here are some of our favorite festive crafts to do together this season!

Clay Leaf Dish
This simple craft gets everyone outdoors and can even be a school project with just a little imagination! It makes a lovely oil tray or a handmade gift.
  • Air dry clay
  • Craft paper
  • Rolling pin
  • Craft paint (we like the metallic colors!) + brushes
  • Modge Podge gloss or other sealer
  • Various leaves from your yard
Step 1 - Cut out a piece of air dry clay, then roll it out onto craft paper to about 1/2 inch thick, making sure your leaf will fit. Then, press your leaf (vein side down) onto the clay. Remove the leaf from the clay, and cut around the outline with a knife, then remove the excess clay from around your imprint.
Step 2 - Go around the perimeter of the leaf and gently press the sides up and in to create a small edge. Allow the clay to air dry and harden on a baking rack for 24 hours.
Step 3 - Paint! Once the paint is dry, cover with a coat of Modge Podge gloss, then dry for 24 hours. After the sealer is dry, have your children sign the back and write the year.
Essential Oil Infused Play Dough
This is a fun one to get your children to make with you OR to make and surprise them with after school!
  • 2 cups flour (can use gluten-free if desired)
  • 1 cup salt
  • 2 tsp cream of tartar
  • 1 Tbsp olive or coconut oil
  • 2 cups cold water
  • 5 drops essential oil: Lavender, Peace & Calming, Tangerine, Believe
  • Natural food coloring, optional
Step 1 - Mix flour, salt, cream of tartar, oil, and water in a medium saucepan. Stir over medium heat for about 5 minutes, until the dough has reached the right consistency.
Step 2 - Let cool, split into 3 balls, and knead in essential oils and optional food coloring until it is distributed evenly throughout each ball of playdough. Store in airtight container.
We hope you enjoy this Holiday Handbook. Bring the family together and try some of these projects! May your days be merry & bright!

DIY Pumpkin Pie Spice Candles - Nov 2022

DIY Pumpkin Pie Spice Candles

This fun autumn DIY is perfect for bringing the warm, cozy feeling of the season into your home! Cinnamon, vanilla, cardamom and more combine for a perfect fall scent. Adding whole spices adds even more scent and beauty to these candles, making them a wonderful gift as well!

Supplies Needed:

Step 1 - Thread the wicks through a wick holder and apply the wicks tabs firmly to the bottom of your jar or container using glue dots or hot glue.

Step 2 - Place the jars on a baking sheet/tray and keep in the oven set at the lowest temperature until you are ready to pour the wax. Warming the containers helps the wax to distribute in the container evenly.

Step 3 - Melt beeswax in a double boiler. Heat and stir until the wax has fully melted and no solids remain.

Step 4 - Let the wax cool to 155°F / 68°C. Then stir in the essential oils

Step 5 - Carefully fill each container to about 1 cm below the rim of the jar. Be careful that the wicks stay in the center of the container.

Step 6 - Sprinkle with a pinch of pumpkin spice and arrange whole spices as desired. You'll know you can decorate the candle when the wax becomes cloudy and sets around the edges.

Step 7 - Let the candles cool at room temperature (not the refrigerator!) for several hours or better overnight. Allowing the wax to cool slowly will create the best-looking candles and helps to avoid crack.

Step 8 - Once the candles are hard, remove the wick holder and trim the wicks to 1/4 in / 0.6 cm.

Tag me over on Instagram @oilisliving when you make these so we can see!

Pine Oil Spotlight - Nov 2022

Pine Essential Oil Spotlight

November is all about thanks, giving and the beauty of what is around us. The weather is growing colder, and our natural tendency is to start to slow down a bit.

Join us this month as we turn our focus towards presence and gratitude, taking daily steps to support our bodies and minds during this season! One of our daily products right now is Pine essential oil.

Pine Essential Oil

Pine essential oil is an underrated one for sure. This tree oil has an uplifting aroma that creates a breath of fresh air anywhere you use it, encourages feelings of positive energy, repels the influence of negative energy, and has some really unique and incredible health benefits!

Just A Drop of Pine…
  • Has a fresh, woodsy aroma
  • Wonderful for cleaning recipes and DIYs
  • Supports muscle recovery and soothes tension
  • Shares many of the same properties as Eucalyptus Globulus; the action of both oils is enhanced when blended together
  • Pairs well with other essential oils such as Peppermint, Lavender, and Eucalyptus
  • A wonderful addition to wellness rollers (especially post-2020!)
Pine needles have been used in herbal medicine and folklore for centuries. Pine needles contain Vitamin A and Vitamin C, which are essential for many bodily functions, including red blood cell production, hair and nail growth, and a healthy immune system. Pine needle tea was a common folk remedy for many things!

Pine Background

The Pinus sylvestris tree, also known as Scotch pine, is a tall coniferous evergreen tree that grows to the height of 131 feet and has characteristic orange-red bark and stiff blue-green needles. Pine essential oil is steam distilled from the needles of the tree and has been researched by Hippocrates, the father of western medicine. Pine's aroma is reminiscent of the Japanese tradition of forest bathing and provides a refreshing breathing experience and encourages a moment of joy.

Key Constituents

*Constituents are naturally occurring compounds in plants (and therefore essential oils) that give them specific health-supporting properties

  • Alpha-pinene - a powerful antioxidant, some studies have shown alpha-pinene to support the body through inflammation and to help calm the mind
  • Limonene - known for its anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, anti-stress support, this is a powerful constituent with many health benefits
Pine & Emotions

Pine essential oil, like the spruce oils, contains alpha-pinene, a constituent that helps the mind and body reach a calming, peaceful environment. Pine is a wonderful tool for processing feelings of being unimportant, not nurtured or disempowered.

Bottom line: however you approach it, Pine essential oil can be a powerful health tool!

To Use - When needed, put a tablet in the toilet bowl, hard-to-clean bottles, or sink full of dishes to help clean and deodorize. Let sit in the bowl, bottle, or sink for 20–30 minutes to fizz and dissolve. Once dissolved, flush or rinse out.

Thankful Heart Diffuser Recipes - Nov 2022

Thankful Heart Diffuser Blends

This collection of diffuser blends has some of our favorites for the cooler months. This time of year we naturally start to slow down and savor the beauty around us, and these diffuser blends are perfect for the season.

Many of these blends include ‘spice' oils like Cinnamon Bark and Clove. These essential oils are supportive of the immune system, are antioxidants (with Clove being a powerhouse antioxidant!), and support the endocrine and adrenal systems. This set of blends also includes ‘tree' oils like Northern Lights Black Spruce, Patchouli, and Pine, which are known for their grounding and calming properties.

Further, tree oils are wonderful for releasing emotional blocks, fostering emotional intimacy and connection, and supporting the body's natural response to microbes. Citrus oils also show up in these blends to bring a bright, uplifting atmosphere that is warm and familiar. Each of the oils in these blends supports the body in a unique way, both physically and emotionally!

Our diffusers are running 24/7 in our homes, supporting our immune systems, respiratory systems, emotions, cleansing the air and making things smell happy and inviting all at the same time. Join us this month as we diffuse these favorite blends for a bit of Autumn to the air and brighten our spirits!

Check it - many of these recipes contain the Gifts with Purchase oils in November. Get the everyday products you need and get free oils to use in the diffuser too!

Happy diffusing!!

Background

Young Living's Golden Turmeric powder is an excellent source of curcuminoids, which help support the wellness properties in our bodies. Chronic, low-level inflammation plays a major role in almost every chronic, Western disease. Therefore, anything that can help fight chronic inflammation is of potential importance in preventing and even treating these diseases.

Curcumin is strongly anti-inflammatory. In fact, it's so powerful that it matches the effectiveness of some anti-inflammatory drugs, without the side effects.
Curcumin is a potent antioxidant that can neutralize free radicals due to its chemical structure. In addition, curcumin boosts the activity of your body's own antioxidant enzymes.
Key Ingredients
Turmeric (Curcuma longa): Curcumin is potent anti-inflammatory and antioxidant compound that also boosts the activity of the body's own antioxidant enzymes. Boswellia resin: Boswellia is a potent antioxidant that supports the body's own response to injury and recovery, scavenges free radicals and supports overall health.
Inflammation & Emotions

Everyone knows that chronic pain is exhausting both physically and emotionally. The same can be said of chronic inflammation as well. Chronic inflammation from injury, diet or other illnesses are like tiny fires within our bodies, and our systems are running to put out the fires all the time. Our emotions follow suit - running and running and running until we are at empty.

Modern science is researching this connection as well! Studies show that chronic stress is associated with increased inflammation, depression and negative emotions, attention changes and even dampened immune responses. Which is just even more evidence that we need to take small, daily actions to give our bodies all the things it needs to thrive! Learn More here

Daily Habits with Golden Turmeric

  • Mix ½ teaspoon in 6–8 ounces of water, juice, or milk of choice once daily
  • Drink at nighttime as part of your wind-down routine
  • Combine with water, ice, 1 drop of Cardamom Vitality essential oil, and 2 ounces of NingXia Red for a delicious wellness drink
  • Add to a green smoothie (it's delicious with the Vanilla Spice Protein Powder)
  • Steep Spiced Turmeric Vitality Tea and add ½ teaspoon of Golden Turmeric for a cozy nighttime drink
Start your day with a Golden Milk Latte (full recipe is here)
  • ½ Tsp Golden Turmeric powder
  • 8 oz milk of choice
  • 1 drop Cardamom Vitality
  • 1 drop Nutmeg Vitality
  • Swish of Cinnamon Bark Vitality (insert a toothpick into the bottle, then swirl it around in the milk)
  • Dash of ground cinnamon for garnish
  • Option to froth some of the milk and essential oils in an electric frother for delicious foam!
Heat the milk on medium low, then stir in Golden Turmeric powder and add essential oils. Stir gently, then top with a sprinkle of cinnamon!
Make a Turmeric Clay Mask (adapted from Hello Glow):
  • 1/2 teaspoon Golden Turmeric Powder
  • 2 Tbsp flour of choice or ground oats
  • 3 Tbsp full fat yogurt or milk
  • A few drops of honey
  • 3 drops Manuka essential oil
  • 3 drops Frankincense essential oil
Mix flour, turmeric, honey and milk to make a paste. Add essential oils. Apply a thin layer to your face and let it dry for 10-15 minutes (see below for guidelines). Rinse and scrub gently to remove.
While the powerful antioxidants present in turmeric impart that vibrant yellow color, be aware that this same color can stick around a little too long.  A good rule of thumb to follow is the one minute rule — if you notice no discoloration after sixty seconds, leave on for another four minutes. Test again, and keep it on all the way until 10 or 15 minutes, which should be the max for most products and at-home solutions.

Thieves Oil Spotlight - Oct 2022

Thieves & Thieves Vitality
Essential Oil Blend Spotlight

This month we're focusing on all the simple ways we can support our bodies through the fall and winter, and Thieves essential oil blend is a key player!

Thieves & Thieves Vitality Essential Oil

If there were only one oil we could have in our arsenal, it would probably be Thieves. This blend of Clove, Lemon, Cinnamon Bark, Eucalyptus Radiata, and Rosemary essential oils smells like a warm cup of chai and is a powerhouse when it comes to our health and our homes!

Just A Drop of Thieves…
  • Cleansing when applied topically
  • Diffuse to create a fresh, healthy environment
  • Provides immune system support
  • Cleansing to the digestive system
  • Source of antioxidants
Thieves is THE oil for immune support. We're talking what you want to reach for daily to give your body a little extra boost and definitely what you want to reach for when your defenses start to go down. A quick PubMed search for the individual oils in this blend will have you convinced that these oils can be a powerful tool for our health!

Thieves Background

Formulated by Young Living founder, D. Gary Young, this blend was created from research recorded in the archives of the British Museum library about a group of 14th century European perfumers and spice traders who rubbed oils on themselves while they robbed the dead and dying. The first essential oil blend to be scientifically evaluated in a university research laboratory, Thieves has a rich, spicy aroma, and is a key ingredient in the Thieves Home Collection – your go to for an invigorating clean and healthy home.

Key Constituents

*Constituents are naturally occurring compounds in plants (and therefore essential oils) that give them specific health-supporting properties

  • Eugenol - known for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory support as well as  antimicrobial activity
  • Eucalyptol - has a calming effect when applied in aromatherapy; may have anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antibacterial effects; supports airway opening.
  • Linalool - supports stress relief and uplifts the mood
Thieves & Emotions

Thieves is a powerhouse for our health, both physical and emotional. This makes a lot of sense since our emotions are closely linked with our physical health. When we are sick our energy is low, we struggle with brain fog and lethargy. Thieves can help us there! Rosemary, Clove, and Cinnamon are all wonderful for helping combat brain fog, clearing the mind, and energizing our spirits. Diffuse, apply, add to an Epsom salt bath.

Thieves is a wonderful choice when you need to help promote clarity. If you're feeling uncertain or unfocused, the blend of oils in Thieves can be helpful. Dilute and apply it over the throat or over the liver.

Product Options

Thieves Essential Oil blend is also infused into a line of home and personal care items that are staples in our homes - cleanerhand soapdish and laundry soaptoothpastemouthwash and more. And even More Amazing Thieves Products on this blog post.

The Autumn Handbook 2022

The 2022 Autumn Handbook

It's the season of cinnamon spice, pumpkins, and your favorite scarf. It's the time of year when the air has a chill and the leaves start falling.

Grab a mug of your favorite fall beverage (see ideas below!) and cozy up with this extensive guide to all things Fall!

Cozy Home Favorites

Halloween Diffuser Cauldron or Autumn Pumpkin
Here is some simple and fun seasonal decor using your diffuser + favorite fall oils! You will need:
  • Your diffuser!
  • A plastic decorative cauldron or galvanized pumpkin
  • Orange & Clove essential oils
Step 1 - Poke a hole on the side/ bottom of the cauldron/pumpkin if plastic for the diffuser's cord. If using metal, simply set the diffuser in and lift the cord out the back.
Step 2 - Fill your diffuser with water, add oils, turn on. Add spider web or tissue paper on top of the cauldron as desired!
Anthropologie Inspired Blends: Diffuse it, Roll it, Spray it!!
These are some of our favorite diffuser blends for the fall season, but they make great rollers and sprays as well! The recipes below are for a standard diffuser and can be adapted easily!

  • To make a diffuser bomb - multiply the quantity of each oil by 10-20 and place in a dropper bottle with a pretty label. (You can also reuse old YL bottles and add a bamboo dropper top.)
  • To make a 10mL roller - have the total number of drops around 30-50 and fill with carrier of choice.
  • To make a 2oz spray - multiply the drops by 3-5, add a splash of witch haze and top with water in a glass spray bottle and add a label.
Mulled Wine diffuser blend
  • 2 drops Clove
  • 3 drops Orange
  • 3 drops Cinnamon Bark
  • 2 drops Nutmeg
Pumpkin Clove diffuser blend
  • 3 drops Stress Away
  • 3 drops Clove
  • 2 drops Nutmeg
  • 2 drops Vanilla
  • 3 drops Cinnamon Bark
Falling Leaves diffuser blends
  • 1 drop Vetiver
  • 3 drops Sage
  • 3 drops Nutmeg
  • 4 drops Idaho Balsam Fir (or other tree oil)
Sugar Cookies diffuser blend
  • 4 drops Vanilla
  • 4 drops Cinnamon Bark
  • 2 drops Lemon
  • 1 drop Nutmeg
Chai Spice Wool Dryer Balls
Make your laundry smell like fall with these scented dryer balls! Place 3 drops of each oil onto each wool dryer ball and let sit for a few hours before use (recommended to make sure no oil spots transfer to your laundry). Or simply drop one of each oil onto a ball and use immediately. For even faster use, premix these essential oils in an empty bottle and place in your laundry for easy use.
Pumpkin Succulent Diffuser
Create a cute, fun and festive centerpiece with a pumpkin, some succulents and essential oils!
  • Plastic pumpkins - real work as well but don't last as long
  • Potting soil
  • Small succulents
  • Natural materials - wood slices, Spanish moss, small pine cones, wood rings, etc. (find them at the craft store)
  • Essential oils of choice
Step 1 - Simply cut the top off of your pumpkin and scoop out the inside if you're using a real one.
Step 2 - Fill about 3/4 with soil, then plant 2-3 small succulents into the top.
Step 3 - Add moss, wood slices and rings, small pinecones, anything fall and festive that will soak in essential oils! Add 3-4 drops of oil to the porous materials for a 'diffuser' or spritz with a DIY room spray (witch hazel + water + EOs) every few days!
NOTE - If you use a real pumpkin, this will only last about a month at most. Using a plastic or ceramic pumpkin will extend the life of the diffuser/succulents indefinitely.
Festive Wreath Diffuser
Create your own festive wreath (and switch it out each season!) with some florals and essential oils.
DIY Scented Pine Cones
This is a fun one because you get yourself outside and collect pinecones in various shapes and sizes. If you have kids they will love doing this with you!
  • Pinecones gathered from your neighborhood, or unscented ones from the craft store
  • Ceramic, glass, or stainless bowl
  • Essential oils of choice
Step 1Preheat oven to 200°. Line an old baking sheet with aluminum foil and place pinecones on baking sheet. Bake pinecones for 30 minutes. Remove from oven and let cool completely.
Step 2 - Add pinecones to the bowl, then add essential oils of your choice about 30 total drops. Seal the bowl & shake so that the oils soak into the pinecones. Leave the bowl in a cool dark place for at least one week. The longer you can leave the bowl covered the better your pinecones will be scented.
Step 3 - Now they are ready to be displayed on your favorite tray!
Cinnamon Pinecone Fire Starters
This craft is a very simple one that my kids LOVE! It starts with gathering pine cones, which is always a fun fall task.
  • Pine cones in various sizes
  • Yarn of desired color (or even dryer lint!)
  • Essential oils
Step 1 - Gather your pine cones and spray with diluted Thieves Cleaner, then let sit overnight to dry.
Step 2 - Once dry, wrap the yarn around the pine cones as desired. You can wrap all of it in the center or cover the whole thing - it's up to you! Just weave the yarn through the individual ‘leaves' of the pine cone.
Step 3 - Drop a few drops of Cinnamon Bark essential oil (or your other favorite fall scents) onto the yarn and let it sit overnight. Store then next to the fireplace, and add 2-3 to the wood when starting a fire!

For the Little Oilers

Pumpkin Pie Play Dough
An activity for the kids with the option of being free of harmful dyes and ingredients and leaves the house and their little hands smelling AMAZING plus it has immune boosting properties! You can make this together, super easy, then let them play the crisp, fall day away!!
  • 2 cups cornstarch
  • 1 cup Kidscents lotion
  • 4 drops Cardamom
  • 2 drops Orange
  • 1 drop Cinnamon bark
  • 1 drop Clove
Mix all the ingredients together and let their imaginations run wild!
DIY Clay Leaf Tray
This DIY tray is a fun craft for the little ones to make and gift! Before the clay hardens, you can drop essential oils onto it. Choose stronger scents like Cinnamon Bark, Clove, Thieves or Peppermint to ensure more scent.
  • Air dry clay
  • Craft paper
  • Rolling pin
  • Craft paint (we like the metallic colors)
  • Paint brushes
  • Modge Podge gloss or other sealer
  • Various leaves from your yard
Step 1 - Explore around your yard and gather your leaves! Cut out a piece of air dry clay, then roll it out about 1/2 inch thick, making sure your leaf will fit fully onto the clay.
Step 2 - Press your leaf (vein side down) onto the clay. Make sure all parts of the leaf press in so that you get all the pretty nuances of the leaf!
Step 3 - Remove the leaf from the clay, and cut around the outline with a knife (have adults do this part), then remove the excess air dry clay from around your imprint. Go around the perimeter of the leaf and gently press the sides up and in to create a small edge If adding oils, do so now.
Step 4 - Allow the clay to air dry and harden. We set ours on a baking rack so that both sides were exposed to air. After 24 hours they had hardened and were ready to paint!
Step 5 - Paint! Once the paint is dry, cover with a coat of Modge Podge gloss, then let that dry for 24 hours. After the coating is dry, have your children sign the back and write the year.
We hope you enjoy this Autumn Handbook. Bring the family together and try some of these projects!
