Emotions and Essential Oils <3

EMOTIONS & ESSENTIAL OILS.

Did you know.... ??? Approximately 87-93% of disease comes from our THOUGHT LIFE. *Thoughts* become emotions, emotions become attitude. Our attitude is our reaction, and all of our daily reactions make up our *lifestyle.* When you think, you build thoughts, and these become physical substances in your brain.

"As a man thinks in his heart, so is he." - Proverbs 23:7

There are two kinds of emotions: Love-based (positive) emotions, and fear-based (negative) emotions.

Love-based emotions include: love, joy, faith, trust, inner strength, confidence, belief, happiness, caring, sharing, forgiveness, openness, passion, freedom, harmony, honesty, beauty, compassion, self-love, self-appreciation, respect, acceptance, and peace.

Fear-based emotions include: fear, anger, disgust, worry, anxiety, frustration, resentment, ill-will, blame, sadness, jealousy, negativity, and stress.

We are ultimately wired for LOVE, while fear is a learned and not a natural response. In therapy, especially with children, I speak a lot about the two. Kids (and adults!) act out of fear when they lie or manipulate. 2 Timothy 1:7 says "For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind."

We live in a world that is filled with health issues-our world is sicker than we've ever been, which means that we are more filled with fear-based emotions than ever before. Fear-based emotions lead to toxic attitudes. Toxic attitudes produce toxic responses in the body. (Think migraines, hypertension, cancer, allergies, chronic pain, diabetes, and and other really BAD THINGS.)

Dr. Bradley Nelson from "The Emotion Code" said "A trapped emotion is literally a ball of energy, and these will lodge anywhere in the body and disrupt the normal energy field of the body." Scientists and Doctors are on the same page in noticing that emotions and certain areas of the body correlate with one another. For example:

Anger is stored in the Liver & Gallbladder.
Worry is stored in the Stomach.
Grief is stored in the Lungs
Fear is stored in the Kidneys.
Stress is stored in the Heart.

Many people commonly relate to worry in the stomach, such as when you feel butterflies in the tummy or even nausea when feeling nervous!

We must take care of our emotional health in order to take care of our physical self! Mind & body are so very connected.

I am an Enneagram 9... (more on that another time) What I have learned about myself as a "9" is that as a Peacemaker and a Giver, I give to everyone else before myself. If I even do anything for myself AT ALL. Self care is something that is SO valuable for everyone but I have learned the hard way how important it is to incorporate self care!

The Limbic System is referred to as "the emotional brain." Within the limbic system is something called the amygdala, which is where we PROCESS our emotions. Of our 5 senses (sight, touch, taste, hearing, and smell), SMELL is the ONLY one that activates the limbic system! That is one reason why aromatherapy, or smelling and breathing in oils, is so incredibly powerful. We can diffuse or breathe in oils to open up our amygdala and process our emotions in a healthy way. SO COOL, right? Such an amazing, natural remedy in managing our emotions!

Let's break it down even more and talk about cells. As you know, we are made up of an insane amount of cells. Your cells, just like your brain, have a memory. You have the power to make the memories positive or negative, but that's another story. The nucleus, which lives inside the cell, is the thinker. It tells the cell what to do (and it's where DNA is produced). According to Dr. Caroline Leaf, "research shows that DNA actually changes shape according to our thoughts. As you think those negative thoughts about the future - the week ahead, what a person might say or do, even in the absence of a concrete stimulus - that toxic thinking will change your brain wiring in a negative direction and throw your mind and body into stress." Is this expanding your mind too?! Okay, so information must go through the cell and into the nucleus so that it stays in communication and keeps working properly. How does the information pass through? Through what's called receptor sites.

But listen to this: *Negative or fear-based emotions damage the receptor sites on your cells.* Just like chemical toxins (processed foods, GMOs, smoking, multiple beauty products) block those receptor sites, so do our fear-based emotions. And when the receptor sites are blocked, our cells don't get the information they need. THAT is how disease can take hold in the body.

*BOOM*

Remember: 87-93% of disease comes from our THOUGHT LIFE.

What does this have to do with oils? Let me tell you!

Essential oils are made up of different constituents: monoterpenes, sesquiterpenes, and phenols.

What do phenols do, you ask? They CLEAN AND REPAIR RECEPTOR SITES. Meaning that the damage that our fear-based emotions have caused can be cleaned and repaired by using essential oils.
Use oils, breathe them in, and they quickly work on your amygdala and affect every single cell in your body within 20 minutes. Even cooler, they're adaptogenic, which means that they will work on the receptor sites that need help.

To clean those receptor sites, look for oils high in phenols. (We will go into all the details in another post.... )
Some great ones include:
Clove
Cassia
Basil
Cinnamon Bark
Oregano
Anise
Peppermint

NOW What do sesquiterpenes do, you ask? They bring oxygen into the brain. This helps our amygdala (remember that is the emotion processing center of our brain) to work as it should.

So, when it comes to using oils for your emotional health - which is really your overall health, because remember: 87-93% of disease comes from our thought life/emotions - what should we look for?

Oils high in sesquiterpenes! (Again, more on this later!)
Some great options are:
Cedarwood
Vetiver
Spikenard
Sandalwood
Black Pepper
Patchouli
Myrrh
Ginger
Frankincense
Lavender

Then, we can talk FREQUENCY. Everything has a frequency, it is a vibration or energy that things operate at. When someone enters a room and you feel it, that is their energy! Same as when someone can suck it out of you.

Oils operate at high frequencies and help our bodies to match those. When you experience the emotion of joy, for example, your body is vibrating at a certain frequency (you know the phrase good vibes only? it’s a real thing ).

So some super smart people created the OIL of joy by using plants and flowers and things that create oils that vibrate at the same frequency our body does when we experience joy. That’s how they are named what they’re named. Very cool!

So. Here is a great summary, provided with some collaboration with Kari Rae Lewis! As a mental health therapist myself, I rely on many of these oils to help release stored emotions and to process other emotions. These oils are amazing in putting that SELF CARE into practice. We all need a little more attention on Self Care and processing our emotions, especially in this crazy time we are in.

Be gentle with yourself and, when in doubt, any oil will do. My favorite is Valor!

Quarentine Day 4,327

Ok. It has been not QUITE that long but some days it feels like it!

I am mostly an introvert, so I honestly don't mind staying at home and having this time to be restful. As restful as it can be in the midst of a stressful situation, working from home, schooling and not a lot of self care or mom breaks for my sanity. The pace of life is less hectic but no less busy.

I saw a great perspective the other day in the midst of some mindless facebook scrolling. (Anyone else??) The post talked about how there are basically three groups of people. This is a time of rest and slowing down that is welcomed and overall not stressful for group 1. Life has not changed a lot and the pieces that have changed are not super significant in the stress piece. Group 2 is stressed and busy and there is stress around finances, the unknown, the busy may have increased, or maybe it is just exhausting being around the house all the time. It is moderate but still stressful. Then we have group 3. Group 3 is under HUGE stress. They are likely the ones on the brink of homelessness or serious financial stress. Not being able to pay for food for their children. Emotional and physical stress, work stress and worries abound. Schooling the kids who are in this group is nearly non existent.

While I believe there are many levels and degrees of stresses, I completely see the basic three in those around me, from people I know personally and the clients I serve. The anxiety and stresses and the overwhelm of change and unknown circumstances. The fear that the media, or other people, tend to grow in us is not helpful. It is a time more than ever to PUSH into God and BELIEVE. I believe this is all in His Hand and He is using all the circumstances to allow us to dive into searching for the truth.

The truth of God and who He is. The truth of the world around us and how things operate. Asking big questions that deserve an answer about our communities and country and leaders. Trusting in the gifts that God has given us, in Biblical leaders as well as in His tools. (plant based natural remedies, anyone???). It is a HUGE opportunity for all of us, regardless of what Group we may be in to look at the pieces in our lives that are going well, that are a welcomed change as well as the pieces that are not favorable. What do you wish to change in your life?? Is this an ongoing change or a temporary one, maybe only for sanity in this challenging time? How are you taking control of your health- mentally, emotionally, physically? How are you implementing self care?? SELF CARE is critical, especially in times of stress!! Do you have the tools you need or are you lacking?

I tend to look at 4 quadrants of health: mental, emotional, spiritual, physical. What are your goals and hopes for these areas in your life??

I am learning how to rely on my oils for emotional support- they have been a God-send in the emotions I have experienced with the loss of my mother. I sometimes forget my oils and I notice it!! Not to mention ALLLLL the supplements that help emotions as well as support me physically. (Ask me if you want to know more about what I use and why.)

As a professional and a health care fanatic, please let me know if I can help you. Provide you tools or support. Need a virtual session or support group? An AFT session? Just to chat? Reach out and know that you are not alone! Stay strong, stay sane and stay healthy!
