Lime Oil Spotlight - May 2022

Lime
Essential Oil Spotlight

OOTM
Lime essential oil has a fresh, crisp aroma that uplifts the senses and brightens any space. This versatile citrus oil is a favorite for everything from cleaning to cooking to immune and emotional support!

  • Has an bright, sharp, green, citrus aroma
  • Adds a fruity, topical scent to bath and body care products
  • Uplifts the senses and supports feelings of clarity and postivity
  • Neutralizes unwanted odors, and purifies the air when diffused
  • Is a great addition to household cleaning solutions
  • Helps provide general wellness support when taken internally
  • Contains antioxidants and limonene
Background

Citrus aurantifolia, also known as Mexican or key lime, is a shrub-like evergreen tree native to tropical Southeast Asia. It produces smaller, mora aromatic fruit than the related Citrus xlatifolia, or Persian lime, which is more commonly available in the United States as a culinary fruit.

Lime essential oil is unique in that it is 100% bioflavonoid. Not only are bioflavonoids impressive in and of themselves, but they also help maximize the benefits of Vitamin C by inhibiting its breakdown in the body. This means that Lime essential oil not only supports the immune system, it also stimulates the detox pathways, helping to clear the body of toxins and unwanted waste. Lime also helps with the absorption of Vitamin C, make it a versatile oil and household staple.

Key Constituents
Constituents are naturally occurring compounds in plants (and therefore essential oils) that give them specific health-supporting properties.

  • Limonene - known for its anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, anti-stress support, this is a powerful constituent with many health benefits
  • Gamma-terpinene - a potent antioxidant, Chinese medicine believes that this constituent may halt the advance of unwelcome microbes, reducing the risk of colds and 'flu-like symptoms.'
  • Beta-pinene - a powerful antioxidant, some studies have shown beta-pinene to support the body through inflammation, to help calm the mind and see the body from the 'fight or flight' response
Lime & Emotions

Lime, like other essential oil, is a wonderful tool for emotional support! Citrus oils evoke the sense of warm, sunny, carefree days which are guaranteed to bring a smile to your face. One major reason for this is because citrus oils contain the constituent Limonene, a compound that is a potent free radical scavenger. Free radials cause oxidative stress and damage to the body at a cellular level, therefore affecting every body system. Less oxidative stress from free radicals is a key for less negative emotions.

Limonene is wonderful for boosting the mood and may increase the amount of calming neurotransmitter in the brain. When we are feeling worried, stressed or indecisive we have a difficult time accessing the right side of our brains, and citrus oils are a great tool! Citrus oils are stimulating to the right side of the brain and can help us work through these emotional blocks.

Emotionally, Lime is linked to feeling unmotivated. Apply a couple of drops of Lime over your lungs to help get some motivation going and promote feelings of clarity, harmony, motivation, and positivity.

DIY Bath Soap for Kids - May 2022

DIY Bath Soap for Kids

Ready for a fun DIY? We've go you covered!

Here's an easy, rainy day craft to do this summer or anytime your kids need a fun activity! Make your own soap and get a prize at bath time!

DIY Bath Soap for Kids
Recipe by Katie Weber

  • Molds to make the soap (plastic cups work too)
  • Cooking spray or coconut oil
  • Pure solid glycerin soap (found in cubes at any craft store)
  • Essential oils (its fun to let kids choose their favorites)
  • Natural food coloring or soap dye (craft stores)
  • Small plastic toys
Step 1 - Coat the inside of your molds/cups with oil or cooking spray.

Step 2 - This step is for adults because it involves hot liquids. Melt soap by placing cubes of soap in a measuring cup and microwave for 30 seconds - continue in 15 second intervals until the soap is melted.

Step 3 - Add in a few drops of food coloring/soap dye to reach your desired color. Mix thoroughly.

Step 4 - Add 6-8 drops of your essential of choice. For bath time we love LavenderSleepyIzeStressAway, and Peace & Calming.

Step 5 - Carefully fill mold about 1/3 of the way full with the hot soap. Let cool for 20 minutes, and then place the small plastic toy on top of the mostly hardened soap.

Step 6 - Repeat Steps 2-4 to melt and color the remaining soap. Pour another layer of soap into the mold to cover the plastic toy.

Step 7 - Let cool for 2+ hours. Once completely cooled, turn the mold upside down and pop the soap out.

Tag me over on Instagram @oilisliving when you make these so we can see!

DIY Shimmer Scrub & Body Oil - May 2022

DIY Shimmer Scrub & Body Oil

The summer heat and sunshine often bring dry skin with them, but these two fun simple DIYs will combat the dryness while adding a bit of sparkle to your skin. Use them together in the summer or anytime you want a little shimmer in your day.

A body scrub is a great way to remove dry, dead skin, and follow it with body oil to lock in moisture. Body oil also enhances the appearance of arms and legs (or really any body part on which you apply it). These DIYs are a fun way to rehydrate your skin!

DIY Shimmer Body Scrub

Step 1 - Add sugars, coffee and mica/eyeshadow to a small bowl and combine. Mix in jojoba oil and essential oils and store in a glass jar.
Step 2 - When you're in the shower, scrub dry skin gently, then rinse. You'll be left with radiant skin and a soft, barely there sparkle!

Note: This scrub should keep for 2-3 months without the need for refrigeration. Be careful not to get any water in your scrub or it will go bad much sooner.

DIY Simmer Body Oil

  • Use a carrier oil, such as rosehip oil or avocado oil (you can also use jojoba oil or V-6 carrier oil, but the results will be more oily and need to dry longer on the skin.)
  • Savvy Minerals eyeshadow in a shimmery color:
    • Wanderlust - pearl-colored shimmer
    • Envy - brown shimmer
    • Residual - gold-tone shimmer
    • Note: mixing Residual or Wanderlust with Envy will give you a gold or pearl toned bronzing effect
Step 1 - Combine the ingredients in a small bowl, and stir until throughly combined. Use the back of a spoon to break up large chunks of eyeshadow and create a smooth oil. Continue adding eye shadow until you get a color you like.
Step 2 - Transfer to a lidded glass jar and keep for up to a year.
Step 3 - This DIY body oil may look dark in the jar, but when applied, the effect is very subtle. The eyeshadow tends to settle at the bottom of the oil, so shake gently before each use.
Step 4 - Customize this body oil for you! If you want a bronzing effect, use a shade of eyeshadow with bronze tones. If you just want shimmer without the bronze shade, use a white or pearl colored eyeshadow like Wanderlust or powder highlighter like Diamond Veil.

Earth Day Everyday

Earth Day Everyday

Sustainability is really important facet of our lives, and simply being aware allows us to think outside the box when it comes to repurposing things. We don't have to be perfect or completely zero waste either. When we all do small things to reduce and reuse packaging, it can go a long way!

You've already started your sustainability journey simply by using Young Living products. The company is committed to sustainable farming practices, regenerative farming and more when it comes to stewarding the earth. We want to be good stewards of the earth everyday in our homes as well, so here are a few simple tips, tricks and DIYs you can implement today!

Favorite Concentrated Products

One simple way to work towards sustainability is to purchase products that are concentrated, making less packaging that needs to be recycled. Here are a few of our favorites:

Also, with just about all of the Young Living products, a little goes a long way! So we are purchasing less single use plastic, recycling what we can and finding unique uses for the rest.

Ways to Reuse Plastic Bags
  • Rinse and reuse for food or to store non-food items in the home
  • Cut off the zip top (recycle it with plastic bags) and use the clear plastic bag as a gift bag! Add tissue or paper to the bottom, then add items and tie at the top with ribbon.
  • Recycle them with plastic grocery bags. (Many food packaging bags can be recycled this way as well. Just check the bottom of the bag.)
Ways to Reuse Plastic Packages
  • If you change your own oil in your vehicle, the Thieves Foaming Hand Soap bottle makes a great vessel for collecting oil! you can cut off the top if needed. Think of this long bottle as one with a built in funnel of sorts, and you'll find uses for sure!
  • When your Thieves Household Cleaner is empty, keep the bottle and add a spray top to use in DIYs, for the garden, or mix up a second bottle of cleaner to keep in the bathroom.
  • Refill empty hand soap bottles and give to friends.
  • Recycle any bottles you can't repurpose.
  • Use Thieves Hand Sanitizer bottles for travel size shampoo and conditioner. Just wash out and fill with anything for a travel size option.
  • Use empty Thieves Mints containers to store supplements on the go.
  • Use larger bottles to grow herbs! Take a Thieves Foaming Hand Soap Refill bottle, and cut off the top. Add some drainage hole to the bottom, plant desired herbs, and place in a sunny spot. You can also use the Thieves Laundry Soap, Thieves Household Cleaner, and Thieves Dish Soap bottles.
Ways to Reuse Glass Oil Bottles
  • Use them as small vases.
  • Use to create pre-made diffuser blends
  • Add a dropper top to use for DIY serums or diffuser blends.
  • Refill them with the same oil and keep at a different location in the home, office, or car.
  • When bottles are empty, place in some Epsom Salt (mix them all in a large glass jar together) to remove any remaining oil. OR place them in a jar of water and use the water in the diffuser.
  • Use clean, empty bottles to make a wind chime.
Ways to Reuse Cardboard & Packing Tubes
  • Use the tubes to start seeds/seedlings for your garden.
  • Make spy glasses, telescopes or other creative toys with the cardboard tubes.
  • Use the circular ends of tubes to paint interesting shapes.
  • Use the tubes to store paint brushes or other small items.
  • Gather multiple tubes, then tape onto a wall or a poster board in various arrangements, connecting some to each other, and let toddlers place soft balls through them like a marble maze. Here is an example.
  • Compost or recycle the boxes and tubes.
  • Use the cardboard as a weed block in garden and flower beds. Simply lay iron the ground, cover with leaves or small mulch and allow it to sit before adding dirt and plants.
  • Make a cardboard box tower by taping multiple boxes together, then let your kids paint it.
No matter which of these suggestions you choose (or if you come up with something on your own), taking small steps everyday adds up to a big impact!

Background

Young Living's Golden Turmeric powder is an excellent source of curcuminoids, which help support the wellness properties in our bodies. Chronic, low-level inflammation plays a major role in almost every chronic, Western disease. Therefore, anything that can help fight chronic inflammation is of potential importance in preventing and even treating these diseases.

Key Constituents

Constituents are naturally occurring compounds in plants (and therefore essentialoils) that give them specific health-supporting properties.

Inflammation & Emotions
Everyone knows that chronic pain is exhausting both physically and emotionally. The same can be said of chronic inflammation as well. Chronic inflammation from injury, diet or other illnesses are like tiny fires within our bodies, and our systems are running to put out the fires all the time. Our emotions follow suit - running and running and running until we are at empty.

Modern science is researching this connection as well! Studies show that chronic stress is associated with increased inflammation, depression and negative emotions, attention changes and even dampened immune responses. Which is just even more evidence that we need to take small, daily actions to give our bodies all the things it needs to thrive. Learn more here: The Interlay Between Stress, Inflammation, and Emotional Attention: Relevance for Depression

Cheat Sheet for Healthy Hormones

Hormone Health Cheat Sheet

Not sure where to start when it comes to supporting healthy hormones? Check out these suggestions and learn more with the individual product spotlight linked below.

The endocrine system is a network of glands throughout the body that makes hormones - insulin, thyroid hormone, cortisol, sex hormones (estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone) and more. The hormones made the endocrine system are responsible for almost every cell, organ, and function in the body.

Adrenal, thyroid and sex hormones work in a cycle together. Thyroid hormone affects sex hormones. Adrenal hormones affect thyroid hormones. Sex hormones affect adrenal hormones. So when one part of the cycle isout of balance, there are consequences for the entire endocrine system.

Thyroid & Adrenals
The adrenal glands are located just above the kidneys and are know for the 'flight or fight' response. This response is natural and necessary. It protects us when in high stress situation (like running from a lion), but the constant stress of daily life often keeps our adrenals on overdrive.

The thyroid gland perfumes a myriad of tasks in the body. It regulates metabolism, energy, body temperature, and hormone production which impacts just about every other body system in some way. Thyroid support is always important, but it is especially so for women aged 25-45 and before/during/after pregnancy.

Thyroid - try ThyrominNingxia Red, and EndoFlex

Sex Hormones
Estrogen, progesterone and testosterone play a huge role in our overall health - everything from reproduction to muscle tone to mood to energy levels. Chronic stress, improper nutrition, low Vitamin D levels, and unhealthy gut balance and yeast overgrowth can all negatively affect estrogen, progesterone and testosterone.

Menstrual Cycle
When estrogen, progesterone and testosterone are out of balance, it can cause some pretty uncomfortable symptoms during the monthly cycle. Other factors for painful periods include overall inflammation and even dietary sensitives. This topic is multifactorial, but here are a few options when it comes to balancing and supporting menstrual cycles.

DIY Stress Recovery Serum

DIY Stress Recovery Serum

It's no secret that emotional and psychological stress can wreak physical havoc on the body. We've all heard of the 'mind body connection' and probably have our own stories of how something has gone downhill physically during times of stress. Even current scientific has connected stress to physical ailments. And lately stress seems to be the theme of the world... for us, for our kids, for our circumstances...

So, what do we do about it? We find ways to effectively process stress and we support our bodies DAILY with supplements, high quality nutrition and essential oils. And this simple DIY is one that you will want to always keep on hand for daily adrenal support.

DIY Stress Recovery Serum (aka daily love for your adrenals)
The adrenal glands are located just above the kidneys and are known for the 'fight or flight' response.. which is great if we're running from a lion. But constant stress of daily life keeps them on overdrive! Give them some love and keep them going strong. Apply over the lower back every morning and before bed each evening.

  • 4 oz glass dropper bottle
  • Castor Oil (see note below)
  • 25 drops Nutmeg
  • 20 drops Clove
  • 20 drops Frankincense
  • 20 drops Rosemary
NOTE: You can use any carrier oil, but castor oil is specifically chosen as the fatty acids in castor oil allow the essential oils to be easily absorbed through he skin. High quality, cold-pressed castor oil can help your body to detoxify and improve circulation.

Let's take a quick look at the oils in the serum...

  • Nutmeg - THE essential oil for adrenal support, Nutmeg helps process and balance feelings of Exhaustion - which makes perfect sense. When our stress response system is on overdrive, how could we feel anything BUT exhausted? And when we are exhausted we are more prone to injury and illness.
  • Frankincense - is a versatile oil that supports immunity, helps the body process inflammation and works as an antioxidant in the body. Frankincense has long been used for its powerful health-supporting properties, and has been used 'to treat every conceivable ill known to man.'
  • Clove - THE Essential oil for powerful antioxidant support. Clove has an ORAC (Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity) value of 1,078,700 (read: Clove is able to absorb and mitigate a LOT of free radicals. It's ability to do so is basically OFF the charts.) Why antioxidants? Because they help boost immunity and allow the body to repair cellular damage caused by the environment, injury and - you guessed it - stress!
  • Rosemary - one of the components of the 'Four Thieves Vinegar' and the Thieves essential oil blend. Rosemary has wonderful cleansing properties, supports the liver and helps support healthy blood pressure levels, which all connect to the adrenals through the HPA (hypothalamic-pituitary-axis).
Use this adrenal serum daily over the lower back in the morning and before bedtime for stress recovery.
