Floods and the Putrid Storage Container Smell
With all the floods occurring recently, one of my friends was severely impacted. She is currently living in a one-bedroom cottage, while she is storing the rest of her possessions from her four-bedroom home in a storage container. The items that she stores include furniture, clothes, photos and other treasured personal possessions. Sadly, she lost many personal possessions, but we also managed to save many items too.

When the floods came through, the bottom of the storage container was inundated with about 30cm of gritty, sandy, dirty water that came in through the flooring. The bottom level of cardboard boxes soaked up the water and their contents were soaked through, leaving many items damaged and lost. Somehow, sand was even found inside the cardboard boxes from outside the container. There was no sand or dirt in the container prior to the flood.

Every day my friend would arrive at the container, she was required to open the double doors and allow it to air out for quite some time before starting to work inside. The foul stench that came out when first opening the doors was disgusting and repulsive. When I arrived after a few days of the cleanup, my friend informed the smell was getting worse and we were also required to air it out to allow the smell to dissipate. Throughout the day, we had to use oils continuously to support the health of our lungs.

A number of people came to help with the emptying, cleaning and repacking of the unaffected items into a replacement storage container over a number of days. We threw out many items, dried what we could in the sun, and repacked the items into a clean storage container. The full day I was there, we managed to complete the emptying of the container and only had some items inside that still required drying.

I brought my diffuser and opted to use Thieves oil. I set it up in the storage container and started diffusing it continuously. I set up my diffuser using a battery and invertor, so I can take my diffuser with me wherever I go and use it. This worked brilliantly in the container to eliminate the foul odour.

Another friend and myself took the clothes back to my home for washing. There were clothes hanging on numerous indoor lines inside my home due to the rain outside. The smell in my laundry, garage and loungeroom was awful. This was due to the clothes being wet for more than a week in cardboard boxes. It took us days to wash, dry and sort the clothes ready for my friend to pick up. We tried to salvage whatever we could. While washing the clothes in my home, we ensured we had open ventilation, the fans going, and had a diffuser running continuously with Purification oil. Purification oil is the odour buster oil of choice.

Four days after my full day visit, my friend finally returned to the storage container and opened the doors for airing. She was expecting to have to air it out for some time as it had been locked up for so long, but this was not the case at all. I was so excited to hear that when she opened the storage container again, the musky, damp odour that usually confronts her upon opening the container was gone. Incredibly, even though we had not cleaned the storage container, there was no lingering odour when opening the double doors. Also, the odour in my home was gone as soon as all the clothes were washed. There was no lingering smell.

This experience has confirmed to me the value of both Thieves and Purification essential oils blends for eliminating odours.

My friend is incredibly grateful to all the people who came to support her in the massive clean up over many days. My heartfelt prayers go out to all the people who have been affected by the recent floods.

Consequently, my go to for smells is Purification or Thieves. Both these oils worked so well. Check out my video on the 15 applications of Purification oil.
