Do you use baby wipes? Do you use wipes on your children’s mouths, hands and other sensitive areas of the body? Do you check if the ingredients are safe in those baby wipes?
In this video, I will discuss some of the ingredients in baby wipes and their potential effects. I will also show you a few suggestions for safe baby wipes.
I use an app called ‘The Chemical Maze’. Also, the Environmental Working Group (EWA) is a great website to utilise too. These sites have become a game changer for me because I can look up ingredients in products quickly to see if they are safe or not.
Over the years, I have presented a workshop called ‘Toxins in Products’. I get participants to examine the ingredients found in common products around many homes. Let’s take a look at some ingredients in baby wipes.
The first product looks like a great product from the front. It has no parabens, alcohol free, soap free and dermatologically tested. However, when I read the ingredients on the back of the product, I find it has 5 out of 10 toxic ingredients. This second product has no fragrance written on the front, but on the back, it has 8 out of 10 toxic ingredients. Also, here are some antibacterial wipes. They have 5 out of 9 toxic ingredients.
Let’s take a brief look at two of the toxic ingredients found in these wipes.
Firstly, Parabens which include Butylparaben, Methylparaben and Isobutylparaben to name a few. Parabens are linked to eczema and endocrine disruption. In other words, they can affect the hormones. They are harmful to the environment and wildlife. They can even stimulate the growth of fat cells contributing to the obesity epidemic. Have you ever tried to lose weight unsuccessfully? Have you checked your personal care products to see if they contain Parabens? Since Parabens tend to mimic female hormones, they especially tend to affect the male’s reproductive system and are linked to reduced sperm count and decreased testosterone levels. This second product contain 5 parabens. Not 1, but 5.
The second ingredient that is toxic is Fragrance, Perfume or Aroma. This is a word used as a loophole for the company being able to use whichever ingredient they wish as long as it is under 5%. Most fragrances are made from petroleum and are linked to cancer, birth defects, and damage to the lungs, brain, and nerves. A great book just on this ingredient is called “The Case Against Fragrance” by Kate Grenville. Well worth the read.
Can you believe that we are wiping these ingredients on our babies’ most delicate areas? These ingredients get absorbed straight into the blood stream. Ingredients linked to disrupting hormones and birth defects.
So, some suggestions include using face washers and rewashing them. You can also make your own baby wipes. And you can use Seedlings Baby Wipes. These have no toxic ingredients and are safe for the most sensitive areas.
If you want some wipes for cleaning shopping trolleys, park benches and cleaning areas when on the go then Thieves wipes are for you. Thieves wipes are not to be used on infants or sensitive areas of the body.
Please get the Chemical Maze app and go and check the ingredients of your wipes.
