Do you know how to read the ingredients in your products?
Why do companies sell us products knowing they contain toxic ingredients?
I learnt the hard way about toxins in products.
In this video, I explain the main reasons why companies continue to make products with toxic ingredients and the three main reasons why we need to be concerned about using these toxic products.
Together we can change the outcome.
NOTE: My children were seeing Speech Therapists - not Occupational Therapists.

Yesterday, I published a video titled ‘Are Your Baby Wipes Safe?’ I have been talking about ‘Toxins in Products’ publicly for more than four years at various venues including libraries. The video I made yesterday was just a glimpse into my 2-hour presentation. In this video, I explain the main reasons why companies continue to make products with toxic ingredients and the main reasons why we need to be concerned about using these toxic products.
I learnt the hard way about toxins in products. When my children were young, they had continuous health needs. I was sick occasionally too. My children were always seeing doctors, specialists and occupational therapists at various hospitals and venues. I awoke one morning to find my 19-month-old daughter very sick. My car had been just been towed away to be repaired and I had to walk my daughter and 16-day old baby boy in the pram to the doctor’s surgery. The doctor examined her and insisted I had to take her to the hospital immediately. I had no transport and the hospital was a 30-minute drive away. The surgery called for an ambulance, but it would not come and help us as they said they were not a transport service and I was capable of getting her to the hospital. Also, my daughter did not have a life-threatening condition. I had no family or friends who could take us to the hospital as we needed two car seats. So, I walked to the station and caught the bus to the hospital with a pram and my two young children. I called my Mum in tears. I felt so disheartened and worried for my daughter. It was such a low point for me. Thankfully, my daughter improved.
Then about 18 months later, I awoke and my son was sick yet again. He was always sick. That was the day I promised myself that I would turn all this around. I would get our health back because we could not continue to live the way we were living. Both my children had various health needs that for the first 12 months of each of their lives, required one to five visits to a specialist or doctor every week. I felt emotionally and physically drained. I started investigating everything to give us health. I was determined to turn all this around.
After making my video on baby wipes yesterday, I received a comment stating that I should send this video to companies who manufacture baby wipes to encourage them to make safe baby wipes.
At first, I felt reassured and believed that this is what I should do. Then it dawned on me; my video will not change companies and here’s why.
Kate Grenville’s book, ‘The Case Against Fragrance’ is an incredible book. Kate stated that there are two main reasons why companies produce products with toxic ingredients.
Firstly, companies find it challenging to formulate products without any toxic ingredients. It is much easier and cheaper to use a toxic ingredient, especially when budgets need to be met and bacteria needs to be inhibited from growing. Most consumers look at price, not at quality.
Secondly, if these toxic ingredients were banned, many businesses would go out of business. Many toxic ingredients are very inexpensive. For example, let’s look at mineral oil or baby oil. Baby oil is derived from the remains of crude oil. It is generally used for massage and so many websites will tell you it is safe. How many mothers have massaged their baby with baby oil thinking they are doing good? ‘The Chemical Maze’ app says it is best avoided.
Baby oil coats the skin in a very thin plastic-like layer that does not allow the skin to breathe. As a result, the skin is less able to uptake any nutrition from the environment, and it also difficult to excrete any toxins from the body. Baby oil tends to slow down normal cell development and can lead to acne and the skin prematurely ageing. Do any of your personal care products contain mineral oil or baby oil?
In the past, people have questioned why even bother with looking at toxins. After all, even natural ingredients like water, vinegar and bi-carb can be toxic in high doses. So, should we stop using these natural products? I am discussing ingredients that are known to be toxic in minute amounts. Let’s look at the three main reasons for concern.
Firstly, the companies know they make products with toxic ingredients. They state it is such a small amount that it will not have an effect. However, a little here, and a little there, adds up to a LOT! This is called the accumulation effect. Numerous studies have worked out what the ‘safe’ levels are to put into various products. Then companies just have to make sure the products are produced with toxic ingredients that are at ‘safe’ levels. So, now I ask you this. What happens when you’re using two different products simultaneously and they contain the same toxic ingredient? For example, when a woman uses makeup and perfume on her neck but with the same toxic ingredient. Has she gone past the safe level?
Secondly, there’s the interaction effect. Studies generally do not look at how one toxic ingredient interacts with another toxic ingredient in another product. So, a facial cleanser, makeup, facial wipes, shampoo, hair spray, perfume – all going onto the facial area with various toxic ingredients. No one truly knows how one ingredient interacts with another ingredient. Companies can control what happens within their own products, but they cannot control what happens between products.
Finally, it is not just how many ingredients we apply. It is also about how large an area it covers. For example, a face cream should only be applied to the face as the toxic ingredients have measured to be ‘safe’ on this small area. If the face cream is also applied to the neck and hands, could be over the safe limit?
Consequently, we must ask; why do companies make products with toxic ingredients? It pretty much comes down to profit. When the lid on the bottle can cost more than the shampoo in the bottle, there is a huge profit to be made. The Cancer Prevention Coalition believe cosmetics and personal hygiene products pose the highest cancer risk exposures to the general public, even higher than smoking.
So how do we get companies to make changes to their products? The answer is we do! As long as we continue to buy these cheap, toxic products, companies will continue to produce them. And I have seen so many people who would rather buy a product that is cheap and does the job, over a product that is more costly and will be beneficial to their health.
Please I encourage you to read the ingredients on the back of the product. We have to stop being led by the advertising on the front of the product. When a product label on the front says it has removed a number of toxic ingredients, but on the back, I can still see many toxic ingredients in the list, it shows me we still have more to do.
It comes down to this - money talks. We are the ones who can make a change. We need to show companies that we want products that are safe and benefit our health. If we buy products from companies that act in socially responsible ways, they will prosper and boom. We need companies to stand up and show us the way forward with energy and vigour.
I have been there. I know what it is like to not have health. When people put their health and the environment first, then we will see a positive change. It’s not until we lose our health, that we realise truly how valuable our health is.
Today I am grateful for the path that my children have taken me on. They have taught me so much. I feel empowered and strong knowing that I am giving us a lifestyle of health, wealth and abundance. I am here to help you on your journey to health. If you want to join me and my team, you can send me an email to YLSunshineDiamonds@gmail.com and join our team. Together we can do it. Thank you.
