Oral Health Care
Now that dentists are only taking urgent cases, it has become imperative to have great oral hygiene. Few people realise how important good oral hygiene is to wellness. I often get asked what I do to have such white teeth, so I have made a list of steps I find beneficial for my family and me.
NOTE: I am NOT a dentist - just listing the steps I take for healthy teeth and gums.

First thing in the morning:
  1. Tongue Scrape: An Ayurvedic practice that helps to remove bad bacteria from your mouth, supports oral hygiene, freshens breath and promote healthy teeth and gums. A study by the Journal of Periodontology found that approximately 85% of all cases of bad breath originate from the mouth, with half of these caused specifically from the tongue. Start scraping from the back of the tongue and pull the scraper forward, ensuring it is cleaned under the tap after each scrape. Brushing the tongue is NOT recommended as the toothbrush tends to be too harsh on the tongue’s delicate surface.
    Copper tongue scrapers are more efficient at removing bacteria than plastic ones and last longer. Check out the before and after photos on Google of tongue scraping. I am selling tongue scrapers - $10 each OR 3 for $25. Pick up Beerwah or postage additional.
  2. Oil Pulling: This involves swishing coconut oil in the mouth for 5-20 minutes. It is important to swish the oil under the tongue and between the teeth where most of the microorganisms are. I used to do this each morning, but I find I gag too much, so I stopped, however there are numerous benefits so I have included it. I oil pull when I feel the need. Ensure the coconut oil is never swallowed as it is full of bacteria. Ensure it is spat into the bin - never down the sink, as the oil can solidify in the pipe causing blockage.
  3. Floss: Most floss products can contain phthalates, bisphenols (BPA), perfluorohexane sulfonic acid (PFHxS OR Teflon). I choose to use Thieves floss with Thieves oil blend for healthy teeth. Can be bought in single pack or 3 pack.
  4. Activated Charcoal: I use this every now and then to whiten my teeth too. Wet the brush, dip the toothbrush in to gather a very small amount on the brush and then brush the teeth. Amazingly, my teeth turn black, but activated charcoal is great at whitening teeth. Spit it out, then brush teeth.
  5. Brush My Teeth: Yes, first thing in the morning. When I eat, food tastes so much better now my tongue and teeth are clean.
    Most toothpastes work by hardening the tooth enamel with fluoride or using abrasive salts to scrub away the microorganisms from teeth and gums. These large-sized abrasive particles can quickly wear away tooth enamel. Most toothpastes also contain fluoride, parabens, colours, Sodium Lauryl Sulphate (SLS), Triclosan, Sodium Hydroxide, Propylene Glycol or Diethanolamine (DEA) to name a few and contain a warning to contact Poisons Control Centre if swallowed.
    However, Thieves toothpastes does not have these warnings. These toothpastes have smaller particles (calcium carbonate and zinc oxide) to gently clean teeth to reduce the likelihood of damaging the tooth enamel and contain no toxic ingredients. There are four varieties of Thieves toothpaste to choose from. Best to mix it up every now and then and use different ones, but my favourite is Ultra.
    * Thieves Dentarome Plus Toothpaste
    * Thieves AromaBright Toothpaste
    * Thieves Dentarome Ultra Toothpaste
    * Thieves Whitening Toothpaste
    * For children, there is KidScents Slique Toothpaste. This safe, yet effective, blend promotes healthy teeth without the use of fluoride, dyes, synthetic colours, artificial flavours, or preservatives.
  6. Toothbrush: I use a Soladey toothbrush. Replaceable heads for less waste. Other people prefer to use a bamboo toothbrush.
  7. Mouthwash: Many mouthwashes contain ingredients like ethyl alcohol, colours, synthetic dyes, or artificial flavours. Thieves mouthwash contains active ingredients like colloidal silver and essential oils of Thieves blend, Peppermint, Spearmint and Vetiver. This mouthwash helps provide an extra clean mouth. The recommended amount is one tablespoon for 30-60 seconds. However, I usually use half a teaspoon mixed with half a teaspoon of water, and find that is enough for me. Shake the bottle before using. Thieves Fresh Essence Plus Mouthwash can also help keep mouth guards, retainers, and other dental appliances clean.

    After Breakfast: Floss, brush teeth and mouthwash.

    After Dinner: Floss, brush teeth and mouthwash.

  8. When I go to the dentist, I ask them to polish my teeth with my toothpaste. They are very obliging.
Of course, I also eat minimal processed food, processed sugar, vegetable oils (like peanut, sunflower, canola and vegetable oils). I incorporate a healthy diet and take nutritional supplements (like Inner Defense, NingXia Red, Sulfurzyme and Mineral Essence) for inner health. I also clean my home with Thieves products as they contain no toxic ingredients and I know tricks to make them very economical.
I wish everyone health on your journeys, and may we all continue to support each other to live as healthy a life as possible.
